In these cases, innocence always seems less and less likely with each additional accusation. Women have very little to gain, other than public humiliation, by coming forward publicly. Women often do so out of a sense of obligation to support another accuser when she herself has a similar story about the same person that she has been keeping to herself; especially when people start saying that the first victim to come forward is "probably lying or after fame or money". Other women who have had similar experiences with the same offender get angry when the first woman is called a liar and they come forward with their own truth in solidarity with the first woman.

Carol D In order to continue this conversation I'm going to have to disagree with your reasoning. There is a multitude of reasons as to why woman (or a man for that matter) to make a false accusation. An accusation can be a powerful thing and it is also a perfect way to gain exposure. However, at this moment in time it should not be for us to judge but the legal system if anything of malice had occurred and people should not persecute others till all the facts are known.

I didn’t talk about what happened to me for years because I was afraid of what it could do to my family and whether anyone would believe me. There’s also this great fear of confrontation. Sometimes it’s also hard to define in what happened right away because there’s this phase of denial. There’s a lot that goes into it.

She was NOT an innocent little girl like people are saying. She even suggested in her texts that she would cheat on her own boyfriend for James Franco... (JF: "Do you have a BF?" .. Girl: "Not if you're around!")... and the age of consent in NY is 17, even *IF* it went beyond flirting. But it did not. It should be done in private. If something illegal transpired, then file a complaint and go through the system. It's getting to the point that looking at a woman could get you in trouble if she takes a dislike to you. I suppose it's not surprising as we've been leading up to this hypersensitised culture for decades. Hollywood seems to have the worst case of it, though, and it's starting to infect the entertainment that they're creating. My hunch is that people will not react well to anodyne movies which are constantly preaching the social justice message. They're going to completely lose the white, male demographic. Who wants to put down their money only to receive hostility and vilification in return?

  • @rubenquiros4859

What scares me is how every accusation is automatically believed. If a disgruntled girlfriend is upset at me, all she has to do is lie about sexual harassment. My life would be ruined and there is nothing I could do about it because her word would automatically be believed over mine.
Look I get it. Women have been silenced for a long time and their accusations have always been ignored; a change needed to happen. However, there has to be middle ground. Accusations can be taken seriously without being taken as 100% truth. We should listen to both sides instead of automatically saying, “the woman is right and the male is a disgusting lowlife.”
Let’s face it not everyone is moral. Eventually one or more females will realize that they can take down a person they dislike with one false accusation. People will automatically take it as truth and ruin the male’s life/career.
This won’t be the popular thing to say, but there needs to be a different way of doing things. We can’t go back to a system where all potential victims are dismissed;furthermore, we can’t stay in this present system of taking the accusations as facts that can’t be disputed. There is a proper way of dealing with these problems that lies in the middle. We just need to find it together.

      @charliecranston5 Před 6 lety +19

Exactly. Like you said, the present system is set for accusations to be assumed as fact. It was a simple thing that i read about Danny Masterson that really showed me what some people believe to be true about the accusations. Danny Masterson was initially accused some 15 years ago when he was still on That 70's Show. LAPD investigated the claims and not only didn't arrest him or charge him with a crime, they found ZERO evidence to support the accusation.
The Louis CK incident was purely accusation (presumed true since he cancelled all of his current work) when Netflix fired him. Amidst that incident, the accuser from 15 years ago came forward and publicly shamed Netflix for not firing Danny Masterson who "has accusations against him", those accusations being the same ones from the prior claims.
That tells me instantly that there is a belief that all accusations are to be punished, regardless of merit. She knows the investigation was already conducted and that there was no new evidence, yet still believes he should be chastised for legally doing nothing wrong.

He's the only Tv host I know who's confronting directly celebities about the accusations they're facing. So if he was legit giving a fu*k about how comfortable his guests are, he wouldn't even bother talking about the issue just like all the other tv hosts. Let's not forget that it's supposed to be a "light" entertaining show so Colbert obviously can't go as deep as he probably would like to.

I feel so bad for him. I completely support the women coming forward and speaking up about the horrors and disrespectful treatment they have experienced but I'm also scared that it is beginning to turn into a "all men are predators" thought process. It is also a way for some people to jump on the bandwagon and ultimately further their careers, have their 5 minutes of fame or simply earn some money.
This makes it even more difficult for the women who really have been subjected to these horrific ordeals
If James Franco did act in the way he has been accused of then of course he should be punished and it should be voiced in public however I feel like we shouldn't automatically believe somebody is guilty.

Enlightened Doggo - the problem we have is the person who is hearing this accusation (in this case the public) sympathise the "victim" because all they have to say is "I was scared and couldn't talk to anyone". It's human nature to feel compassion and also find the blame. The accused should be allowed to ask questions, absolutely, and get given an opportunity to defend themselves (such as Franco has done) but some others don't get the opportunity or if they did they still get looked at as the villain. A French actress posted an article today and called it a "Witch Hunt".
What's worse is the people who are falsely claiming (or even exaggerating) sexual assault or harassment are actually making the real sexual assault and harassment victims look bad as some people may start to think they are lying, too, it discredits them and that's a mighty big problem and I feel so sorry for those real victims.

Only about 2% of all rape and related sex charges are determined to be false, the same percentage as for other felonies (FBI). So while they do happen, and they are very problematic when they do, people claim that allegations are false far more frequently than they are and far more frequently than for other crimes. Put another way, we are much more likely to disbelieve a woman if she says she was raped than if she says she was robbed, but for no good reason.

Similar to how Heath (RIP) used certain methods (no, not those) in order to BECOME the joker. Heath didn’t portray this maniacal character, he became him...the best performance I have ever seen. Not to mention Alfred(Michael Caine) having two, Lucius Fox(Morgan Freeman), Miranda(Marian Cotillard), Now we just need Tom Hardy(Bane), Joseph Gordon Levit(Robin) Arron Eckhart(Harvey Dent), & Maggie Gyllenhaal/Katie Holmes(Rachel).
Then Batman, his allies, and villains(in Nolan’s Batman Trilogy) will all have at least one Oscar each. Tom Hardy is next...he has to be. Himself along Ryan Gosling are the BEST two actors in their PRIME currently IMO.

Have we forgotten that inoccent men who have worked hard to forge this career for themselves are being harassed? It's disrespectful to think that woman who haven't experienced sexual harassment could make accusations anytime for whatever reason to misuse that power. It's a slap in the face to woman who've truley gone through this because they know nothing about what they've been through. All life and situations need to be balanced on a scale. If it's tipping something's not fully right. I believe this movement not only needs to protect and let the women who have truly gone through sexual harassment be heard, but to protect men who are being falsely accused. This isn't just about protecting women, it's about protecting everyone.

...why..? Females aren't capable of sustaining it.? You realize females are a majority of the population, not males..? I don't have social media so I only barely even know what's happening and this is quite new to me (the time's up meme, not the problem that it's addressing) so please feel free to call me an idiot but it seems to me that while any good support on this issue would be great this shouldn't have to be an issue which for any reason needs extra male bodies... Especially supporters.? Maybe you mean males who are actively trying to accomplish things or maybe you mean males who don't actively get in the way but you said supporters. Yes we should support this in principle but who the hell needs another yes man in the room? Why not tell that person to wait outside? Again I didn't watch whatever Franco was on so all I know is that Colbert just told me Franco had a pin nor do I know any of the criticism that was put against Franco so maybe my point isn't relevant and I'm certainly not referring to Franco as a yes man but your words alone aren't very clear to be sure..

I feel like with everything going on, people are feeling like they HAVE to believe every single allegation made and that's just not fair on people who are innocent. Not saying that everyone is innocent but we have to believe that they are until proven guilty. These are serious allegations and they ruin people's lives so we shouldn't jump on the bandwagon just for the sake of it and especially if we don't know the whole story.
This is just my opinion but if you want to believe something you've heard only a few sentences about and automatically believe the worst, go ahead.
This also isn't specifically about James Franco by the way but personally, until there's further info, I think it might have been a misunderstanding but I know nothing. He said the girl took the tweet down so it may be because she originally tweeted it as a joke, to see if it would do something because it's pretty clear that once an allegation is made, people are automatically going to believe it. AGAIN, I know nothing so just my opinion with all that I know.

I totally agree. And while there will be cases where the accused isn't charged with anything in a court of law but the court of public opinion sees that person's obviously guilty (OJ for example), those are few & far between. Cases like that also definitively ruin that person's career.

Even from the start, I don’t find it wise to judge the truthfulness of a claim based on a statement in Twitter. Courts exist to evaluate those claims. You can make a claim effortlessly in Twitter but the effortlessness is almost gone in court.

    • @kristynamixova7502

Which is why I'm glad Stephen posed the question as to what other ways are available for people to discuss these issues besides using social media. Not all women who come forward about sexual harassment and assault are going to press charges, and a lot of accusations will not go to court. And perhaps some of the things he has done to women aren't technically illegal, but they are still misogynistic and creepy. Women have the right to speak up about these incidents, and right now, unfortunately, Twitter is the best way to do that.

It's difficult, in a time where Trials, and Convictions don't need to occur for someone's career to end immedietly, I see a man who whether guilty or not, knows that he's a tweet away from his life being over. There are truly some monsters out there and they should face up to what they've done and face charges. But among the monsters, I believe there are also innocent people who've spent decades building careers, and now people who are jealous, just want them to crash and burn, or want to have a voice or power, now have a way to punish and destroy those who they envy in a quick fashion, that allows discretion on their part because all they have to do is type a message on a playing card sized device, and hit a send button from thousands of miles away. And it's over for these people because no one wants to take the time and treat some of these people fairly before writing them off. James gets accused the night of his Golden Globe win, Stan Lee, days after his 95th Birthday. It's hard to think there wasn't some intent to get these accusations out when these people were already in the headlines so it would be noticed. It seem suspicious, and unreliable to me. There's no evidence They did it, and also none saying they didn't. except for the man trying to defend themselves on live television while these unknown accusers sit without fear of indiscretion. I don't believe there's much suspicious about this interview, just someone who is scared and knows that his voice and recorded trust is worth less than an anonymous written one that was taken down right after it was put up. You can delete a post, but you can put words back into your mouth. James did some very bad things in the past, but was held accountable and he took responsibility. And people actually were able to forgive him and give him another chance. I think that should hold true now. We can't allow people to acknowledge and rectify there wrongdoing if we mute their voice, block them, and delete them from our history. Not just Franco, but everyone in this situation. No jumping to conclusions on the part of the accusers, press, or the actor's employers/ accociates. There needs to be a full investigation and trial if need be. Both sides of the story are important and deserve to be heard. If you have a voice, be ready to use it not just for an offensive accusation and then disappear, but to defend your claim facing the crowd and prove it as fact. Every voice, and every life needs to matter. Not just one group, race or gender. Lives Matter

If he says he supports the "Me Too" movement by wearing the badges and shit that means that he supports and believes all the women that come out (and he's indicating that we should too). So why is he the exception? Does he expect us to believe the Weinstein accusers and not his? At the same time if he says he doesn't support them, it could be only because he's being accused of something himself and that he is infact guilty. Nevertheless, I don't see why he should receive any special treatment. They cancelled Kevin Spacey's shows and movies and never gave him a chance to explain, why aren't they doing the same for James Franco?
