In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor horrifyingly shatters the idyll of Francisca’s family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening some unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca’s loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a distinctly dark form.

For the people who check trailers here before watching….. I recommend watching this film 100%. Very eerie and real tone to it. The isolated country environment gives off a sense of I’m not safe and I am alone. There are some extreme things that are shown. The movie is more of a slow burn, the main actress does a good job keeping the movie interesting and maintain a creepy vibe to the audience. Watch this as soon as possible 👍🏽

I found this to be an amazing movie!!! I totally recommend it, although it might not be for everyone's eyes. It's a sick yet beautiful movie, all filmed in black and white, which really adds to the whole atmosphere. It depicts loneliness in a very mature and adult view. This is the ultimate horror film!

I had to see this and paid $7 to watch it. I wasn't frightened. I was and remain disturbed by the movie. The images. The thoughts that follow as any human would think what it would be like to be tortured for years in this way. Reminds me of Girl in the Box. I woke up thinking about. I am still thinking about it. I understand it and that's scary because there are a lot of questions I felt were answered. You fill in the blanks and it makes insanity. Insanity can make some sense, This is a movie which allows the viewer to see what is happening without a lot of blood and gore and sound. It's quiet. Lonely. Dark. Dreadful. I'll keep watching parts of it over and over to get more information. It's going to get at you one way or another. You will feel something inside you stir. This is a movie you want to talk about to others who have seen it. It forces a response. And it won't hit you mildly although the movie is mild. So keep that in mind when you put it on. And do not whatever you do... Go into the barn.

No offence, but you seem pretty disturbed right now...whether you became obsessed with this movie and that began your descent into madness... Or if you have always had issues and becoming obsessed with this movie took you from troubled to full on disturbed, that I don't know. But I do know that you have invested far too much into that comment to be considered normal..

The Eyes of My Mother is a film that really pay off on many levels. The cinematic art film one hand. Yet A slasher picture with no attempts at irony. Hauntingly hypnotic. The film is very delicate and precise in it psychotic violence as to be difficult to analyze or describe. I would go so far to say
The Eyes of My Mother is an insightful, meaningful, and exquisitely beautiful horror film, and undoubtedly one of the genre's most important offerings .

The following review and analysis should not be read until the film has been viewed in its completion. To do so would spoil the experience of the film.
The Eyes of My Mother is an acutely compelling study of dissociative identity. The protagonist is drawn apart by two inexorable forces: her mother's haunting influence and the strength of her own will. From these opposing forces arises a partition, a fracture of essence, which evolves into a simultaneously frightening and endearing persona.
When her mother is killed by a home intruder, the protagonist seems strangely unperturbed. Her father disarms and disables the intruder, smashing a bottle into his face. She takes him to the family barn and chains him, dressing his wounds and caressing him as a mother would her child. Calmly and unhurt, she asks,
    "Why did you do it?",
to which he replies, with searing abandon,
    "It feels amazing".
With this admission he has freed her, and hence freed himself from her debt; her calm affability as she listens to her mother's killer reveals a conflicting relief at her mother's death, and through the expression of this nihilistic ecstacy he has shown her a path to enlightenment, a means to fulfill her mother's legacy, unburdened by her grip. When he then asks whether she is going to kill him, she replies softly,
"Why would I kill you? You're my best friend."
She then gouges his eyes and leaves him, returning every so often to tend to her writhing captive.
This scene sets a pattern: every person hereafter with whom she forms a close relation has eyes gouged and is kept captive in the family barn. She murders her father, gouges his eyes, and keeps his preserved corpse in her home, speaking and interacting with him as if he were alive. After bringing home a companion from a bar, she, after a plain admission of her father's murder, is shocked at her companions revulsion, and pleas desperately for her to stay despite her frantic attempt to flee. With artful suggestion, the film cuts directly to the protagonist soaking up a pool of blood.
These scenes betray a severe disparity of mind: even in her darkest moments, she displays a genuine compassion toward her captives, tending to them carefully and whispering kind words in their ears - a compassion which finds it's supreme manifestation in the gouging of their eyes.
"All things are known through the eyes", says her mother in an earlier scene, holding the eye of a cow she had removed from its severed head, as the protagonist listens with fearful wonder. By removing the eyes of her captives, she deprives them of the ability to know their suffering, and thereby relieves them of it. Like the cows which her mother used to satisfy her macabre ruminations, her captives serve as objects for her to resolve the trauma of her past, but even still she treats them with the utmost respect and empathy, even as they lay chained, maimed, and slowly dying. This is the only way she knows to consummate her dissonance.
This behavior is exhibited further when she runs off with the baby of a new acquaintance, stabbing her as she rushes to reclaim her child. As with the others, she chains the child's mother in the barn and gouges her eyes, living then what she believes to be a serene and joyful life with this child which she has now convinced herself is her own. It is at this point that the symbology of the barn becomes apparent: the dark recess of her mind is given concrete existence in this grotesque chamber of horror, standing separate from the loving luminescence which her newfound child has provided her. When he, now around ten years of age, stumbles into the barn and upon his true mother's rasping deformity, he gasps and flees out into his supposed mother's arms, inquiring frantically,
"Who is that person in there? Why is she in there?".
"Never go in there", she replies with dreadful concern, voice shaking. "Never go into the barn."
In the final scene, when the child's family comes to reclaim him, shouting with fearsome hostility from the yard, the true nature of the protagonist comes to light. Holding her child tightly, butcher's knife in hand, she trembles with frenzied defiance, loathe to let these strangers take her child away. It is apparent that she feels fully justified in her actions, and expresses surprise at the mere hint that she should be doing something wrong; for despite her benign intentions, she is innately conditioned to see things through her mother's eyes.
    *****************
Comparisons can certainly be drawn between the protagonist and two of the most infamous serial killers in world history: Jeffrey Dahmer and Ed Gein.
The former suffered an inferiority complex so severe that he couldn't bear the idea of being walked away from, so much so that he would lure young men he met at bars to his apartment, where he would force-feed them homemade concoctions and drill holes in their brains in a primitive attempt at mind-control. Only in this way could he ensure their eternal companionship. This behavior finds it's parallel in the scene where the protagonist murders the woman she brought home from the bar when she suddenly tries to leave, and also in her gruesome mutilation of those she, in a state of mad desperation, held in captivity.
And though Dahmer was a likely inspiration for the grisly treatment of her captives, Ed Gein was almost certainly the prime inspiration for the structure of her personality. Ed Gein lived in Plainfield, Wisconsin in the mid-20th century. His mother, like that of the film's protagonist, held an eerie and dominant influence over her son. When she died (of natural causes), he kept her corpse perfectly preserved, housing her in her room, which he pristinely maintained while the rest of the house fell into ghastly decay. He began exhuming the bodies of recently deceased women who bore sufficient resemblance to his dearly departed, tanning their skins and faces, and keeping various of their organs as artifacts. He would traipse around the house, wearing suits made of female skin, speaking in his mother's voice, and in effect trying desperately to preserve, as he had with her body, his mother's presence. This ghoulish activity culminated in the murders of two women, whom he shot and, according to the police report, mutilated, dismembered, and "dressed out like a deer". Police reported that, despite the horrible nature of his crimes, Gein exhibited a childlike innocence, behaving almost as an infant would, raising questions as to how such an endearing innocence could be capable of such horror. Compare this with the protagonist's enduring empathy and cooing nurture toward her victims as she chained and mutilated them, or as she dances a traditional Portuguese dance, innocent, graceful, the Virgin Mary praying serenely in the foreground, her father sitting dead in the same room, gazing upward through empty sockets. The disparity between these two modes of behavior precisely parallel that between Gein's kind innocence and the startling brutality of his crimes, the most striking correspondence being that between the immaculate condition in which he left the his mother's room relative to the chilling disarray in which he left the rest of the house, and the peaceful splendor of the protagonist's house relative to the horrors lying hidden in the barn.
Shot in silken grayscale, bathed in haunting shadow, The Eyes of My Mother captures artfully, in visual style and narrative theme, the intriguing but terrifying reality of dissociative identity. The frightful tension which emerges of necessity from the protagonist's precarious balance between kindness and cruelty, order and chaos, light and dark, pervades every word, every movement, every frame. The viewer finds it impossible to hate the protagonist, despite her horrid crimes, but feels rather an enduring sympathy for her; the film forces us to appreciate the full spectrum of her persona.
Besides being a masterful portrayal of mental illness and it's environmental causes, it also achieves the ideal of cinematic storytelling: nothing is told, only shown, and every aspect of the film embodies the horror, struggle, and humanity of the protagonist's mind. It is at the same time among the most provocative, profoundly moving, and subtly terrifying films in the history of world cinema - a masterpiece of psychological horror.
If you enjoyed this film, you may also enjoy the following:
    Repulsion (Polanski; 1965)
    Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Hooper; 1974)
Silence of the Lambs (Demme; 1991)
    Psycho (Hitchcock; 1960)
Deranged (Ormsby; 1974)[an accurate and compelling filmic biography of Gein]
It is interesting to note that, save for the first, all films on this list were in whole or in part inspired by the legacies of Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy. The first is a supremely crafted psychological horror film whose protagonist bears a striking resemblance to this film's protagonist, but the nature of whose psychology differs in minor detail.

Yeah I hate when people think black and white make a artistic statement. I was going to rent the movie because it looked interesting but I can't stand black and white so nope.

      @Alvaro-fh5dd Před 7 lety +13

I can understand your point, but its stupid to say that a black and white movie is for ¨pretentious snobs¨ or completely unnecessary, it can be an historical movie, or with the intention to make it more terrifying, which makes complete sense.
By the way, i have seen a lot of black and white movies and some of them were terrible, so for me its not always good because its more artistic, it depends on the story, the director, the acting, etc.

    • @Entropian2012
      @Entropian2012 Před 7 lety +2

Yeah but let's be real 99% of the time when people add black and white to a film they do it to be Artistic lol

    • @Alvaro-fh5dd
      @Alvaro-fh5dd Před 7 lety +3

That was a quick respond, wow lol.
And yes, its true, they can make it for artistic purposes too, but i have seen fantastic cinematography in colour movies, it doesnt matter at least to me.
But my point here is that they are looking an effect, it can be for historical purposes, or maybe other ones. I think its legit, and i have no problem to watch a black and white movies, we need both...

This is my 4 year old daughters favorite movie 🥳

  • @WoodyStickman
    @WoodyStickman Před 3 lety +3

My ex-wife dumped the kids with me for a night 4 months ago and I'd heard about this movie from a friend.
As revenge for being an an evil, cheating, succubus, I set all 3 of them up with a case of energy drinks and turned this movie on the big screen in the basement.
When it was over, my 8 year old son (he's the oldest) told his little sisters (who were extremely upset) that it was just a movie and it wasn't real.
I knelt down in front of all of them, worked up some fake tears, and said, "Listen to me, very carefully... don't ever trust your mother." I gave them all big hugs and said, "I love all of you... and mommy doesn't always think right. Her brain has something wrong with it, just like the lady in the movie..."
I choked back a few tears, and cranked the sorrow to 11.
"You used to have a brother," I said, "he would have been 11 years old now, but your mother..."
I worked up more fake tears... I could have won an academy award for this performance... damn I'm good. They REALLY bought into it.
"What happened?" My son asked. "Did mom hurt him?"
I didn't say anything, I just gave a few small nods.
"I can't tell you exactly what she did, because the police never found him. They never found his... they never find his body..."
All 3 of them were dead silent, and that's when we heard the demon witch's car pull into my driveway.
"Please be careful around her..." I told them quickly. "She can't be trusted... EVER."
The doorbell rang and I shouted, "Come in, it's open!" Then turned to my children with my finger to my lips and said, "shhhhh!"
Their mother walked in, smiling and happy. She tried to hug all 3 of them, but they hid behind me and my 2 youngest peed their pants.
"What happened?" The witch asked. "Why are they acting like they're scared of me?"
"Maybe you should tell me." I told her. "They've been like this all weekend... what have you been putting them through? What did you do?"
3 days later, I had full custody and my ex was in jail. All 3 of my children claimed she cut people up and kept a man tied up in her garage.
There is of course, no evidence, so she was only in jail for a month... but children can't make up something like that, so the police and the newspapers assumed the worst.
She lost her job, her friends, her home, and her alimony.
Just last night, I was driving through town and I saw her. She looked like the hell she was spawned from. She was sitting on the sidewalk in the rain, wrapped in a garbage bag, sitting on top of cardboard with a sign that said "Need money, food, clothing, anything helps... God bless..."
I drove a few blocks down the street to a dog park, where I found a nice juicy dog turd and wrapped it in a $5 bill, then drove back by her and tossed it out the window, right at her feet.
She smiled as she reached for it, but I was long gone before she unwrapped it and saw what was inside.
I wish I could have seen the look on her face...
My kids all live with me now; they're well-adjusted and they have a wonderful stepmother who they all call mom. Things have never been better for us.
    Isn't life beautiful?

@@IDK-fv3hu she'll be okay. She's always been industrious. In fact, I just found out this morning she got a job at a 24 hour massage parlor. A couple women she met in jail put in a good word for her and she was hired on the spot. She gets paid daily, tax free, and in cash, which is pretty neat. I guess she and the other ladies just have to pay rent to the landlord; a guy named Gator that also provides security because apparently they've had problems with perverts going in there trying to get "more than a massage", if you know what I mean.
She's a survivor, though. I'm confident her story will have a happy ending.

@@brittanywhite3054 all that really matters to me now is that my kids are safe and I'm not paying alimony that gets used to buy meth and cigarettes.
My ex was sent to prison about 3 months ago for armed robbery, assault, reckless endangerment, possession of an unlicensed firearm, threatening to kill the judge and the prosecutor, and offering sex to a corrections officer if he just "let her go."
Her sentence was originally 10 months in county jail and one year of probation.
Of course, she couldn't keep her mouth shut and started screaming at the judge, tried to spit on him and, as the bailiffs were restraining her, she said "you're dead when I get out, you f'n n-word! You and your family!" to the judge (And yes, he was an African American).
All said and done, she bought herself 13 1/2 years in state prison. With good behavior, she could be out on parole after serving no less than 79 months.
She's pretty screwed. I'm betting she'll fall in with a gang and either get life for killing another inmate, or get killed by another inmate.

Movie looked promising, but I watched it and it was ultimately boring. There was no development at all of a character you could care about until the very end and it lacked a cohesive plot outside of “this girl has trauma and now she’s a psychopath”…. I wouldn’t personally recommend watching it. Very surprised by the positive reviews honestly.
