  • Located in the county of Essex, and around 25 miles east of central London, is the town of Stanford-le-Hope.
The name 'Stanford-le-Hope' literally translates from Old English to 'Stone ford (shallow river crossing) by the inlet'. At its heart is the Parish Church of St Margaret. This dates from the 12th century, albeit with additions up to around the 16th century. The church is Grade I listed.
For centuries, Stanford-le-hope was a small settlement surrounded by farmland. Whilst this is mostly still the case, the population has seen significant growth in more recent years. In 1854 the railway arrived in Stanford-le-Hope, as part of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. Today, this line of track provides access to Fenchurch Street in the City of London in just under an hour, making it a convenient spot for commuters seeking a base with a somewhat rural feel. Rail travel also allows access to Southend-on-Sea to the east in around half an hour or less.
If you know any interesting historical facts about Stanford-le-Hope, let me know in the comments, because I'm drawing a blank on this one!
