  • Today, we are in one of University of Maryland's two 2011 Setra S417TC's. This is unit 311, with approximately 381k miles (615k km) at the time of recording. Apologies for the excess squeaking and rattling- that is from the plastic shielding around the driver area for COVID purposes.
    Engine: Mercedes-Benz OM471
    Transmission: Allison B500

    Wow that roads and hways are insane in the United states. Absolutely love it. I am bus driver in Europe. Narrow street and stupid drivers everywhere. Wish u many and many lucky miles. Greetings from 🇸🇰

      Our motorways are not bad - the toll roads I drive on in this video are relatively new and smooth.

    I'm applying to UM. Do they allow students the option to get their Class B CDL and drive or do you have to be an actual staff member?

    • @eugew23
      @eugew23  Před 3 lety +4

      Students can be trained to earn their CDL and be part time employees, as well as apply to be full time staff. Unfortunately, there is an indefinite hiring freeze at the university due to COVID.

    Does this Setra have the Series 60 or Mercedes OM471? How is the power and handling compared to the J4500?

    • @eugew23
      @eugew23  Před 3 lety +4

      I believe this one has the OM471. It's exceptionally smooth and powerful, and sounds great, too. It is mated well to the Allison B500 and is always in the right gear, unlike the GenV B500 in the J4500, which upshifts too early. Power delivery is not as smooth in the J4500 either, and high speed smoothness is lacking compared to the S417TC. The S417 has much heavier steering, which is cumbersome in tight lots, but at highway speeds, the stability it offers is very much appreciated.

    • @eugew23
      @eugew23  Před 3 lety +4

      As you might figure, I much prefer the Setra over the MCI haha

    • @johnwilbur5123
      @johnwilbur5123 Před 3 lety

      @@eugew23 Are you driving the Setra in Performance mode and the J4500 in Economy mode? The B500 usually has 2 shift schedules and if you run in Economy mode it upshifts at a lower RPM.

    • @eugew23
      @eugew23  Před 3 lety +3

      @@johnwilbur5123 In this video and the MCI video, I am driving both vehicles in the regular transmission mode. I have tried "Mode" in both vehicles and the Setra takes the cake with performance shifting. The MCI doesn't seem to adapt to a higher shifting point as well as the Setra does and I cannot feel a difference in performance between the two modes in the MCI.

      @@kelantefountaine4513 I'm quite the fan of them mirrors but mostly because they really reduce the amount of blind areas that regular mirrors introduce. Huge difference from our MCIs.

    We in Europe regard Setra as the best bus... What about you guys over there? How does it compare to your buses?

    • @eugew23
      @eugew23  Před 3 lety +3

      I'm not sure what the attitude towards Setras are in the USA, but I can personally say that I give it high praise for its build quality and performance. They are not that common in the states. I can only compare with MCI's J4500 because that is the only other coach I've driven, but our Setras, which are nine years old and have around 350-400 thousand miles (560-650 thousand kilometers), drive more smoothly and elegantly and make less interior squeaks and rattles than our three year old MCI's, which have around 100 thousand miles (160 thousand kilometers). However, they are more difficult to repair and source parts, which mostly come from Germany.
