Very cinematic opening for children tv show. It still holds up and is quite innovative for the time. They won't do that anymore for a kids' show.
I remember around 2009 we were clearing out some drawers at my grandmother's house, and I found a picture I'd drawn of the Tope and some of the characters from Parallell 9... Clearly I cared about the show in 1992 even if not many other people did!
A few years back I watched the entire run of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In when it was an Amazon Prime and was amused to see Roddy Maude-Roxby was one of the cast members in the first season, nearly 25 years before he was on Parallel 9! Still with us at the age of 92.
I did years ago see a clip from the final episode of the first series where you see the letterboxing "wobble" and move up and down slightly a couple of times- revealing some of the image that presumably was meant to be hidden. Clearly whatever they were using to superimpose the bars over the image threw a bit of a wobbly!
I can remember being sat on the floor watching this as a kid when my mum walked in. Within a few seconds she said "what the bloody hell is this?"
It was quite a change from the normal kids show we were getting in the 80's.
Also the first thing they showed was a Michael Jackson video which was in no way suitable for young kids
All these years later it randomly popped in my head today in work when talking about kids shows we had growing and had to show a slightly older friend in work this video because he thought I was making it up 😂

I remember watching this when I was a kid and being really cheesed off that Going Live wasn't on. I watched this for about an hour and was ready to switch it off when all of a sudden Jim Bowen appeared! I watched with a mixture of bemusement and weird fascination until I was hooked! I think a lot of it had to do with the old man, Mercator. He had this strange manner about him and I personally put it down to the fascination young children have with old people... the cartoons were great of course but every week I tuned in just to listen to him!
You must be one of the only other people to have a tape of this show - I’m the kid in the purple hypercolour t-shirt!
So you are! That must have been quite an experience…do you still have the watch that goes backwards??
@@JB1601 I do! It needs a new battery though. It was an amazing experience for a 10 year old, that's for sure.

It feels weird seeing this, feels nothing like a Saturday morning kids show whatsoever! 😂
