How Zoom Rose To The Top During Social Distancing

  • Zoom has gained an incredible amount of popularity, but that popularity comes at a cost. The company is under intense scrutiny now that hundreds of millions of people are using the platform. But Zoom is in the game for the long haul, if it can survive a post-COVID-19 world, and can continue to fix privacy complaints as they come up.
With millions of people being forced to stay home to help stop the spread of COVID-19, many have found creative ways to virtually stay social through happy hours, trivia nights and birthday parties. And Zoom, one of the dozens of video conferencing services, has risen to the top, thanks to intense separation measures and a profound resonance within this new social distancing culture.
Daily downloads of the Zoom app have increased 30x year-over-year and the app has been the top free app for iPhones in the United States since March 18, according to Bernstein Research and Apptopia. Zoom said daily users spiked to 200 million in March, up from 10 million in December.
But it hasn't been without scrutiny. Privacy concerns have been rising around Zoom, including "Zoombombing," where a malicious user will join a Zoom meeting and show explicit or disturbing images. CEO Eric Yuan apologized on Thursday for the security lapses and outlined what the company is doing to fix those problems.
Watch the video to learn how Zoom became the go-to platform, how it is handling the influx of users and whether the company's success can be sustained after offices open back up.

When it comes to Skype and Discord, Skype didn't have the style that was needed... people needed something that was easy to use and wasn't RAM heavy, where they can use it in games and people can key up to say something or broadcast... it was more refined, with Zoom it's more for video conferencing between 1 on 1 people or groups for businesses and they needed something they could try without a subscription right now and has great API, Zoom is that, Zoom is similar to discord with the features that the businesses need and is so simple and easy that even grandma can use it... that's the software of today...
It needs to be so simple it can be used not just today, but right now, but it needs to be so advanced that I can customise it to be a team member of my company and possibly core staff member that is cheap. it makes money so it's what the doctor ordered when it comes to investments - a solid return, and because it hasn't got so many bugs from the Windows 98 era like Skype does that Microsoft added in

Who knows what mutation of covid19 we'll see a decade or century from now. Practices like social distancing will be far more effective than vaccinations, if established as norms in the future.

Unless Zoom really messes up, I imagine they'll still have a much greater number of users, including paying ones, after quarantine than they did before. People know about it now, and the longer this goes on for the more comfortable they'll be using it. Even grandparents are learning how to use Zoom right now. The most inconvenient part of using this app is the learning curve, and over 200 million people are now getting over that.

I didn't understand the popularity over teams for example, even though I don't know anything about programming it is good to know that there is a reason. On the other hand, I assume a lot of people are in the same situation as I am, where they don't really know the difference in technology... so is zoom popular because there were a few that knew and started a network effect very quickly? @@AJ42069 low tier plans are more so for consumers. Most individuals are fine paying $1-3.99 per.month for something but 20 is a different price range.
It's like a $6 pack of lamb chops vs a $10 pack. Most people will buy the $6 over the $10 and some will still choose the $10, but if your only offering $10 packs of meat you loose most of the customers who would have bought the $6 one and are left with only the ones that would buy the $10 one anyway and SOME but not a lot of the $6 buyers.

TBH it is bound to show some drop as people resume their work , school and collages but the thing is
They most likely made the money from their free users by the gains in their stock prices
And really as more and more people like it the app suddenly becomes the go to place when you have to do distace meetings because even after this pandemic ends there could still be reasons to use this app and really if you reallise that most of your meeting lasts longer than 40mins you might want to buy the premium version so that you no longer face any disruption

The smart managers are not going to forget the widespread adoption of the Zoom method for holding FYI meetings. The really smart managers are going to tell employees, 'Hey, instead of coming in at 8:30, if we agree to a 15 minute Zoom meeting at 7:15 am you can come in at 9." Then at no charge an entire team will be thinking, uninterruptedly (at least for the drive in) about work for an extra hour a day. And worker tardiness will vanish.

"While Zoom is headquartered in the United States, and listed on the NASDAQ, the mainline Zoom app appears to be developed by three companies in China, which all have the name 软视软件 (“Ruanshi Software”)."
    Source : citizenlab.ca/2020/04/move-fast-roll-your-own-crypto-a-quick-look-at-the-confidentiality-of-zoom-meetings/
Zoom documentation claims that the app uses AES-256 encryption for meetings where possible. However, we find that in each Zoom meeting, a single AES-128 key which we verified are sufficient to decrypt Zoom packets intercepted in Internet traffic, appear to be generated by server.
The AES-128 keys, which we verified are sufficient to decrypt, appear to be generated by Zoom servers , and in some cases, are delivered to participants in a Zoom meeting through servers in China, even when all meeting participants are outside of China.
