People talk a lot about the line, "There are no heroes left in Man." but I feel the beginning is much more powerful.
    "Tell me now!
Is there a Man among you here,
Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight?"
    "Tell me, Man!
Is there not one in all your ranks?
Is there no one who values Courage, over life?"
Protoman is begging for any of the crowd to stand up for themselves. I see it as the implication that if even one person put themselves forward, he'd turn around and fight Wily's forces tooth and nail(or bolt and screw, as it were)

Whenever I here the line "Is there no one who values Courage, over life?", I think of Tank Man, the Chinese protestor who stood in front of a tank in an attempt to stop it in its tracks. "Everything a man is supposed to be," in the words of Emily from Act II.

@@pseudogenesis I always interpreted it as his Breakman mask. I figured he was wearing it during Vengeance and took it off when he said "What vengeance means" to talk to Megaman, and then he puts it back on at the end of this song because hes no longer the man who wore that face. Then he wears it all throughout Sons of Fate until it falls off when he dies, at which point Megaman slowly puts it on as he comes to his realization. However, I think your interpretation is equally valid.

    • @DrTofu83
      @DrTofu83 Před 3 lety +12

@@baval5 Both interpretations are correct. It can also be that Protoman dons the Breakman mask when he feels less the robot he used to be and more Wily's pawn.
When he tells his story to his younger brother and cautions him against humanity, he's Protoman taking pity on Megaman and feeling he's going to be broken by loneliness and despair as he was, when he's done and Megaman is still willing to fight, he dons back the Breakman disguise, as Protoman is no more there, and Megaman is no more his brother but an enemy.
When Megaman kills him, Breakman returns Protoman for a final time, and Megaman returns to be his grieving brother.
So Megaman becomes the "new" Breakman, but instead of breaking others he lets his own heart shattered beyond repair until he can't feel anything anymore

This song really hits me at heart. I don't know what it is, but that robotic cry from Protoman as he screams to humanity in a hope of convincing them one last time really just bring a tear to my eyes.
This man sacrificed everything he had in hopes to have their help, but now here he is, a resurrected, hollow remake of what he once was, screaming and pleading the truth to them and his younger brother. I think Protoman knew he was about to fall one last time, but if he could use his voice once...

  • @DigsDugd

i love the distortion that creeps into Protoman's voice when he's particularly agitated, at 4:09 for example

  • @thekaboominator1
    @thekaboominator1 Před 3 lety +9

One thing I love about this song is how the distortion varies in Protoman's voice. The distortion tends to be an indicator of how evil the speaker's intentions are (of maybe how disillusioned they are. It's debatable).
And for the most part, Protoman's voice has some level of distortion. But it's highest when he's badmouthing man, saying they're all cowards. And it's almost entirely gone we asks "is there not one among you who will try to fight?". In that moment, he's not a soldier of Wily, or a man bitter at being abandoned by those he tried to save. He's just a man genuinely hoping someone will stand up, pleading with the crowd to follow the example he and his brother have set.
It really adds to the message of this song. Protoman's goal wasn't vengeance. At least not completely. He wanted to force mankind to stand up for themselves. I don't think what he's done is *right*, but it's understandable.

  • @say_farmer7
    @say_farmer7 Před 3 lety +74

    Lyrics
    You're trying to understand.
I told you your brother had been killed.
Yet, here he stands in the very shadow of the man you came here to destroy.
You came here to avenge his death.
You came here to save mankind.
You see now, you cannot do both.
    Tell me now.
Is there a man among you here?
Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight?
Tell me Man, is there not one in all your ranks?
Is there not one who values courage over life?
    They looked to me once.
    Now they turn to you.
    Do you understand now?
Do you see that the truth is they don't want to change this?
    They don't want a hero.
They just want a martyr, a statue to raise.
    I've given everything I can.
There are no heroes left in man.
    So it begins!
No matter which one of us lives, the ground we're standing on will crack and blow away.
    And you will fight.
But when you fight, you'll fight alone.
And in the end you'll see there was no other way.
    I've been here before.
    I've stood where you stand.
They called me their hero, The Hero of Man.
But why should we save them
    When they stand for nothing?
If they deserve life, LET THEM STAND FOR THEMSELVES.
    We've given everything we can.
There are no heroes left in man.
They'll watch you die to save their lives.
They will not stand here by your side.
    (Instrumentals)
    We've given everything we can.
There are no heroes left in man!
So let them watch as we decide,
the very fate of all mankind!

Rock music is characterized specifically by being relatively fast and punchy with electric guitars. Metal is to rock as the rapier is to the sword, or as crack is to cocaine. It is the refined, concentrated, most powerful version of the genre.
When I listen back to back between Iron Maiden, and say, Rush, while one is rock and one is metal, it's the same itch getting scratched. The same can't be said for any of the other equivalents you drew, and if you were to find and equivalent where it did indeed scratch the same itch, I would feel the same applies.

My guess is Wily took what he could of him (even if pieces) and tried to replicate him the best he could. Possibly his robots were able to "scan" him before killing him off so he could do what he could to rebuild him. From there, it was just a matter of simply getting a point across Proto's mind that he was fighting for the wrong side.

I have a particularly strong memory of this song. I live in Massachusetts, not terribly far from Boston. I was on high repeatedly listening to The Protomen in mid-April of 2013. On the morning of the 15th, I had just gotten off the train coming home from work and I noticed there was a huge crowd on the Train Platform - something very unusual for my small town. While I squeezing through the crowd, I was listening to this song - in particular the speech by Protoman about if there was anyone who valued courage over life would stand up. I silently sung along thinking that this band was right. There are no Heroes left in Man.
That morning was mere hours away from the Boston Marathon Bombing. That crowd waiting for the train was going to Boston for the Marathon.
I wonder if there was meaning in that moment.
