  • Chocolate: Benefits vs. Dangers | Is Theobromine Safe? - Thomas DeLauer:
Learn the OTHER benefit of Chocolate! I'll teach you more about the foods that work for you at www.ThomasDeLauer.com Click to learn more.
    Theobromine and Fat Loss:
Theobromine is the major alkaloid in cocoa, giving cocoa its bitter taste. Theobromine is the substance responsible for chocolate being toxic to dogs and some other mammals. Humans process theobromine differently, leading the many health benefits rather than toxicity. Cocoa consumption began in the Americas and spread to Europe in the 16th century. It was traditionally used both as food and medicine. Theobromine concentrations are higher in dark chocolate than milk chocolate or white chocolate. Cocoa nibs and cocoa powder have the highest concentrations. It is a substance known as a methylxanthine derivative. Caffeine is also a methylxanthine → caffeine and theobromine are similar in molecular structure. Our affinity for chocolate has to do with the combination of caffeine and theobromine.
-A study had participants consume a drink with a capsule of either placebo or a caffeine/theobromine combination similar to that of chocolate. Those that consumed the drink with the caffeine and theobromine reported liking the beverage more. Just like caffeine, theobromine is a stimulant. This is due to their effect on adenosine receptors. These compounds act as adenosine antagonists, taking the place of adenosine on receptors in the brain. Theobromine is about 1/10th as effective as caffeine in the body, so it takes much more theobromine to feel its effects than caffeine. The half-life, the amount of time that it takes for your body to process ½ of a substance, of theobromine is about 6 to 10 hours, longer than that of caffeine. This means that theobromine stays around in the body for a long period of time after consumption. Theobromine is an anti-inflammatory and reduces oxidative stress in the body. It has been found to help with asthma symptoms. Theobromine has been found to increase HDL cholesterol and decrease LDL cholesterol. Theobromine has been found to affect DNA and RNA structure. The full impacts of this are not yet known, but it is hypothesized that this can inhibit or induce gene expression.
-Caffeine has been found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
-Thus theobromine may be effective to treat some diseases and could be used in future drugs
Theobromine and Weight Loss: Theobromine may help to speed up weight loss, but not as noticeably as caffeine. As a mild stimulant this can give you the energy to go for a run or hit the gym. As a diuretic, this can help you to empty the contents of your stomach. Also may act to suppress appetite, reducing our likelihood to consume unhealthy foods at moments of temptation. The quantity of theobromine found in chocolate and other foods, such as coffee, are unlikely to be high enough for you to notice any weight loss impact through the above means, especially when compared to caffeine in coffee. However, there are so many other health benefits, and the more all-around healthy you are the more able you are to live an active lifestyle. One of these has to do with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the most likely way that theobromine may aid in weight loss.
A 2005 study had volunteers consume dark chocolate for 15 days, and then white chocolate. Insulin sensitivity was increased during the dark chocolate period. Improved insulin sensitivity is crucial in weight loss.
    Can You Have too Much?
Studies have found that the positive mood effects of theobromine turn negative when too much is consumed. Dark chocolate has roughly 200 to 300 mg of theobromine per 40 grams, so a typical 50 gram dark chocolate bar can be assumed to be at about 250 to 375 mg of theobromine. One study found 700 mg of theobromine lowered blood pressure, increased how interesting a task seemed and decreased calmness. Another study found that higher levels of theobromine, from 500 mg to 1000 mg, experienced more “dislike” feelings. So, eating one dark chocolate bar will likely lead to positive mood effects, but eating two or more could lead to negative effects.

From my experience with cacao powder I learned you have to eat it 10 hours before going to sleep in order for the therobromine to get out of your blood stream. I consumed the cacao powder it in the afternoon and evening and after two weeks I was exhausted and could barely stay awake during the day. Once I researched it and found the theobromine issue I added cacao to my breakfast, drinking it or adding it to oatmeal, and I began to sleep well again. So...you really have to have cacao or dark chocolate before noon to prevent it from really messing up your sleep patterns and making you miserable.

      And phenethylamine apparently.
I took 1,5 grams of phenethylamine at once lately, holy moly, after about 15 minutes it kicked in and made my heart race and my whole body tingle, while moving felt like living in light cotton, effortless. I never did any other amphetamines (except for bupropion if that counts), but I'm pretty sure these were similar physical effects as one might get from speed and XTC.
But I never experienced that with chocolate though, not even when eating 300 grams of dark chocolate at once.
Cacao also contains a FAAH- (an enzyme that metabolizes endocannabinoids) inhibitor, which might enhance the bodies own cannabinoids their activity.
But the only real 'buzz'/slight high I ever got from cacao was by snorting a couple of lines of pure cacao powder. But that might as well have been a placebo buzz, especially as it was only very shortlived. Had similar effects with less then 200 mg snorted crushed caffeine tablet.
Native Americans used cacao as an entheogen, I guess raw cacao might work better for this purpose, but there are other herbs (like nutmeg, sage, leonorus, wild lettuce, kanna, kratom, etc.) with waaay stronger psychoactive effects.

If you appreciated this video, you may also want to know that there are a number of steps to making chocolate! First, cocoa beans are picked from the tree. At this stage, the beans are white and gooey. The beans are fermented for 2 weeks and left to dry. Once dry, the beans have turned brown! The dried beans are roasted to create more flavor, and finally, made into chocolate products!

1.45 - I think this may be a little incorrect the way youve phrased it. There are multiple adenosine receptor subtypes in CNS - caffeine is an antagonist of these receptors - which block them like you said. HOWEVER - adenosine would activate these receptors, not block them like you were saying. adenosine receptor activation, specifically 1 and 2a subtypes (as per wiki, I dont walk around carrying specifics on subtypes of adenosine receptors in my head) is thought to increase fatigue. So antagonising these receptors - via xanthine derivitives reduces this fatigue, like you were saying.
I think you just mis-worded how adenosine works.
Maybe add a little note or something over the vid :) hope this helps.

Raw cacao has small amount of theobromine instead of caffeine but with similar effects. You can find more information on this topic by going to realrawfood.com look for "Cacao Info". For the turmeric/ginger drink you can find a very good recipe by a CZcamsr "Clean and Delicious" under her "Immunity Boosting Hot Cocoa Recipe" video.

You should mention that chocolate on it's own in small amounts is okay...however nobody has a small amount of chocolate I guarantee everyone eats more than the recommended daily dose. Now combine that with the consumption of tea/coffee...I was drinking 2 tea's a day and eating 4-6 chocolates I got theobromine poisoning and almost died plus the effects of caffeine on my heart was unbearable felt like extreme anxiety when I just had fast heart rate. You should never eat chocolate everyday and if you do don't eat it with tea or coffee or any other source of theobromine/caffeine...and don't eat more than the daily recommended amount.

I have a bad reaction to chocolate. Doctors have been no help, they basically deny that I have an allergy or reaction and blame it on the caffeine. I think it might be the theobromine?
