  • This comes from the very early days of ITV Schools programmes being shown on Channel 4. The programme titles for How We Used To Live on the caption bar are not removed like they normally would be when the transition to the countdown clock is made after 'The Journey' has finished playing out - was the person in charge not paying attention or was it a genuine software error?
All credit for this clip should go to James Hudson.

Weirdly I've been using this clip every morning before I go to work as a keyworker during Covid. It centres me, and reminds me that easier times would come even in the scary moments

This was definitely from early Autumn Term 1987, as a couple of tweaks were made partway through the term (the ITVs later disappear behind the clock disc when gliding off, and there is no freeze frame at the end). This recording is from a Tuesday or a Friday though, because HWUTL was not scheduled on a Monday.

It Was Channel 4 - The programs was ITV education. These was for the Classroom TV. ITV run until about 10.30 / 11.00 then it swapped to C4. But i can not remember the period so well. Funny enough, i can recall every note and sound in the music though.

In days before multi digital freeview satellite/cable tv, their were a limit of four terrestrial tv channels to choice from and itv schoosl programmes were on itv from 1957 to 1987, From september 1987, ITV Schools programmes transfer to Channel 4 for itv constrated on daytime tv programmes and the spinning logo was itv schools logo with the Channel 4 logo below to let viewer know that they were watching itv schools programmes on 4.

In six years of ITV Schools on Channel 4, this is the only caption error I remember - and it's a very minor timing error. Did someone manually fade up and down the supers, or was this actually automated?

no it was always done manually it was never automatically done, it was done by by people in the studio, and it was still in the very very early days from the move to channel 4 they was still learning how to get it in time. I once saw a programme on it years ago I can't even remember what the programme was even called,it was very interesting though.

Very confusing - are we watching ITV or Channel 4? Even more confusing in Wales - were they watching ITV, Channel 4, S4C or BBC? When S4C put out regional programmes in Welsh, it would say ITV Schools, the S4C logo where the 4 is, the name of the programme in Welsh, then Ymhen Ychydyg underneath (follows shortly), then, when the programme started, it would say BBC CYMRU!
