  • If I'm well practised and experienced at battle royale distance, I can do this. Right now I'm neither of those things, but who knows, maybe I can fluke a game with a few bronze badgers in the lobby, or maybe finish top 3? Watch till the end to find out..

      yea. for anyone who doesn't know, look at his last round as an example. he starts in mexico, but then on right side you can see that someone else has guessed better than him, and he is like 6,800 miles away. then he tries albania, and he's still losing, but now he's only 200 miles away from the other guesser. at this point, you can be 100% certain that the true location is closer to albania than it is to mexico, and it's also more than 200 miles away from albania. since guessing spain didn't improve the distance at all, it would be logical to guess 200+ miles to the south or east of albania next.

They could also be 1000 and 1018 miles away from the correct location (and, in that case up to 2018 miles apart from each other). It doesn't indicate the distance between players, but how much further/closer your guess is to the correct location.

    14:41 Tom, the distance it shows for the other people's guesses is very helpful here. It says the person above you is only 18 miles closer than you, and the numbers haven't changed since your initial guess in Lithuania. That means that the location is almost certainly somewhere close to that guess, so you guessing very far in other countries makes no sense. Just a little tip c:

      @Kiwi2703 Před 3 lety +167

      And again at 20:38 - The person above you was 6862 miles closer than you, and when you guessed Albania, it changed to only 206 miles. This means you got a lot closer to the correct location. So guessing Peru after that made no sense either. Try to look at those numbers sometimes, they really do help c:

    Tom a tip for how to improve littering the map with guesses:
    At 14:50, You were 18 miles further from the guy in 4th and (assuming he made no other guesses), 41 miles further than the guy in 2nd.
    So rather than littering the map with random countries, the solution there is to make a guess ~60 miles away from your first guess. If it's not closer than your original guess, make a guess again in approx the opposite direction. With 3 guesses using the strategy (assuming the other guy doesn't guess again and get closer, which does happen and make it difficult) you can approximately pinpoint the direction of where the location is from where your closest guess is
    This is the advantage of saving guesses in the early rounds (which you're really good at), that you can be super aggressive with this tactic in later rounds

  • @timtran3595
    @timtran3595 Před 3 lety

    Not really sure about how scattering works etc. but I couldn't help notice there are numbers in miles, above the guesses (i.e. *up arrow* 23 miles). idk what it means, but when you guess closer, the value changes (easiest example is last one where you guessed albania and it was in Turkey). Another one to check would be the map where you guessed Lithuania. Anyways, point is, you can use that to try and pinpoint the general direction/ possibly distance? of where it is given the topography (i.e. there's an ocean in the way if you go in X direction). Cheers! Enjoyed the video, and can't wait to see your first win using this new challenge :)

If you say 100km behind someone and you guess to the south of your current position and it goes down to 80km then the place is (most likely) more southern. If the guess doesn't change any distance you can be sure that the direction you went for the second guess is wrong.

    11:51 as an austria I can give you some tipps here:
    - The sign below (red font on yellow) writes "Murauer" which is an austrian beer which you pretty much only get in austria.
    - Looking at the pub sign you can see on the left side a white cross on a red background which is the flag of vienna so it's probably vienna ;)

    If you're scattering in a country there's a strategy (apart from looking at the other players distance difference):
    1) choose a point near a border
    2) choose a point near the opposite border
    3a) no change? Choose a point in between points 1 and 2.
    3b) yes change? Choose a point north/south of the nearest point
    4a) If 3a, choose a point north/south of point 3a. Continue narrowing it down, alternating north/south or east/west
    4b) if 3b, continue narrowing it down. Alternate north/south or east/west

    One tip on the Brazilian round: mostly of the Brazilian northeast countryside is dry and arid, so that guess was too far north.
    Another thing you can pay attention to is the language. Portuguese is very distinct from Spanish (at least for me) so it's pretty easy to distinguish between Brazil and other south america countries just by language alone.

    Hey Tom, for that Malaysian round, 'bas sekolah' = 'school bus' in Malay as a few others have pointed out. You also zoomed in on the street signs that said 'Johor Bahru' at the bottom, which is one of the biggest cities in Malaysia. The city borders Singapore, but you're right to notice that the wealth divide is huge. Many people in JB are not well off, but the lucky ones who can find a job in Singapore will travel across the bridge to work every day and bring their first-world earnings back to JB. Those electrical huts with the red and blue band around them are also a recognisable feature of the area.

    I've been playing "no move" lately inspired by this channel. I tried "no move, no pan, and no zoom" but that was a bit too much for a relative n00b like myself. I'm still proud that I got a "no Google" (and with no street signs visible in the shot to assist me) guess that was less than a kilometre off in Brisbane, Australia the other week, since it was obviously Australia but the palm trees looked more tropical than the trees in Sydney.

  • @drscopeify

    Okay. A bit of a tip for GeoWizard: The distance to next person can tell you a lot. Say this last game in Turkey. You are 6000 miles away from the person in front of you on you first guess. This means they are 6000 miles closer to the spot. You guess Albania and is now only 200 miles behind the next person. This tells you that if you guess 200+ miles in the right cardinal direction you will end up closer than them (you need to get a grip on how many miles certain distances is on a map, might be a good idea to look at a map that has distances written out). Try east/west. Or north/south. If anything changes on the board between you and the next person, then you need to go further that way to get closer to the goal.
    I try to picture a radius around you or a bubble of sorts. If the next person is 50 miles away, they are somewhere on the border of a bubble around your guess with a radius of 50 miles. If one way doesn't get you closer then try the other way. All will go well as long as you dont confuse 50 miles with 500 miles. You only need to get slightly closer than the next person anyway, so why overdo it and risk getting way beyond where you need to go.
    I hope this was somewhat easy to understand. I see you struggling a bit with this and just wanted to help. You are usually a genius in recognizing and finding places but in this game mode you need to learn to estimate distances and use logic to ascertain what you need to do in relation to the other guessers. Cheers and good luck!

    I don't know if you noticed or forgot, but you can use the 'how many miles away from the best guess are you' at the right to figure out if you're guessing closer or further away when scattering. For example I noticed in the Turkey round that when you guessed in Mexico you were 6,000 miles away from the closest guess, meaning on the other side of the world, so you closely guessed Albania and it then showed that you were only 200 miles away, meaning it's probably somewhere close to that area, presumabely Turkey, because I at least couldn't think of any similar-looking place in another direction 200 miles from Albania.
    You probably knew this but sometimes when you forget you lose the game haha!

    Tom the no moving rounds were so impressive. Main takeaway is that you need to understand how the distance ranking system works. You seemed to get it in earlier rounds, but that last round you showed you don’t quite get it at all. I’d love to see more of these where you understand and use your opponents distances to your own advantage

    Tom you gotta use the distance between other players to your advantage. At a certain point you were only 20~miles away from the person ahead of you and you started making guesses very far from your position. If ppl are that close to your guess then it's probably something nearby. Likewise if you're in like second and the first guess is 300 miles away then you know you're in the wrong area by a good margin
