In the script Cas literally is thinking that Dean is 'beautiful' and 'stunning' and right before he says I love you, the script says that Cas is calm as he's about to speak his deepest truth. This is absolutely romantic, even if it's unrequited. Cas loves Dean and none of y'all can change that, sorry

This scene was weird because it’s not often you see Cass cry or smile so to have both at the same time just was weird in a good way it felt like an actual goodbye basically the writers saying “hey it’s nearing the end Cass is dead for good this time and he gave his final goodbye” this scene was packed so full of emotion I didn’t know what to feel and that’s some good writing.

It’s not a shock at all he doesn’t have to love him sexually like you people want him to apparently. He loves him as a human being and out of all the people Castile hazmat Dean is the one he loves the most. He is his guardian angel after all and there doesn’t have to be a sexual tension there just because you want it to be.

I do think it was a love story but not the type of humanistic love story that includes sex and marrige. Instead it way a love so selfless and boundless it saved the world.

I had only seen a clip of this that didn’t show Cas explaining his deal with the empty so I didn’t understand Dean’s reaction or lack of expression but seeing Cas explaining everything and knowing he did this specifically to save Dean, meaning Dean knows what will happen because of this confession, makes me understand it completely differently now. He doesn’t want to hear it because he knows it means Cas’ death.

You can see that towards the end Misha/Castiel is showing his higher original voice, because it's hard to stay in character when you're truly sad. A lot of these scenes during the end of Supernatural show them crying, because they are actually sad about Supernatural ending. I always wanted a Destiel scene, but I never wanted it to end like this. There are only two episodes left I don't know how they are going to wrap it up without... The main characters dieing.

It is really interesting that people are still discussing if it is romantic or bromance. Isn't it so obvious? He says that MY HAPPINESS WAS SOMETHING THAT I THOUGHT I COULD NEVER HAVE. Then he says that he understands true happiness is not having, but also saying and confessed his love. Does it sound brotherly love to you? If it is brotherly, why did he think he could never have? Does it make sense it is brotherly? He felt happy because he hid it for years and finally got a chance to confess. He felt relaxed, renewed and ready to die with a smile on his face.

Honestly I’m glad he got to cry like this. It’s like a mix of happy tears and sadness. He finally confessed but he knows he’ll never have dean, and I’m so happy he finally got to let it all out and actually show some strong emotions. I always hoped that one day Cass would break down and just explodes of emotions, but now that we’ve got something close to that, it really is heartbreaking.

No joke I’ve never seen a single episode of supernatural but Cas’ talk about happiness has genuinely made me sit here and evaluate my life

I don’t watch supernatural for years but I had to come back for this. It has been ages but this still killed me inside
Misha just nailed this scene. When Cas realizes what he has to do you can see his heart drop. The pain going into the speech and the joy as he leaves the scene knowing he just saced the person he cares about the most in the world.
Dean is just trying to process. It is not him being uncomfortable. He just thinks he can't lose anymore. He realizes what happened after the fact. That was very well executed.
However, I wish we saw the talk between dean and sam after this. But they wanted to break the heart of all thoose who shipped destiel. So they skipped that scene.

Idk how people can watch Castiel looking directly at Dean Winchester with tears in his eyes and hear him say the words "Because the one thing I want... Is something that I know I can't have." and "I love you, Dean." With so much pain and adoration in his eyes and take that as anything less than a love confession. Destiel is canon, you wanna take this scene out of context and say that this was just a bromance kind of “I love you” then you do that but don't get in the way of the destiel shippers celebrating the fact that after 11 years of sexual tension and not so subtle longing glances DESTIEL IS CANNON B*TCHES.
I love that I stopped watching this years ago. Makes this less heart breaking, more funny/nostalgic

I know a lot of people are saying that they way Dean is written in this scene is cold or emotionless, but honestly just look at Jensen's acting.
The way he goes from confusion at 1:45 to disbelief at 2:46 when Cas is telling him that he is not everything he believed himself to be. And then you can point to the moment he realizes where this is going as Cas starts to talk about hell and how Dean has changed him, and you can see the heartbreak on Dean's face at 3:56 where he knows he is about to lose Cas. When he practically begs Cas, "don't do this" he is begging him not to leave him with this hole in his heart. You can see him fighting to keep control when Cas says good by, knowing that Cas loves him, but he can't say it back, because then he would have to acknowledge that he is about the lose the one man he truly loved.
Dean is far from emotionless in this scene. He is accepting Castel's confession the only way he knows how, by trying to make the inevitable hurt less.
He can do better, its clear that Jensen does not want Destiel to happen. Dean has shown way more emotion at cas's and others death before. He acted this way on purpose because Jensen hates Destiel. Cuz he is a closited homophobe

I agree! His microexpressions in this scene are beautifully done, and I don’t understand people accusing him of showing no emotion when you can clearly see that he’s trying to stifle crying. He’s a subtle character, he’s not going to start screaming everything he feels at the top of his lungs. As for Shane’s comment, that’s complete and utter bullshit. It’s been confirmed that Jensen expressed full support for this scene when it was pitched to him, and I believe he actually came up for the idea for Cas to leave the handprint when he left. If he hates the ship or is homophobic, why on earth would he be actively trying to come up with ways to make the scene more meaningful and sweet? Jensen has always been openly bothered by fangirls spamming ship related questions at him instead of talking about the actual show, but he never hated the ship or lgbt people (he’s always expressed full support of lgbt fans whenever they mentioned it without making it entirely about ships, and as others have mentioned he’s supportive of his gay aunts as well). He clearly liked this scene and I think his acting was excellent. It’s also not a fair critique to say that he’s “reacted more” on other occasions when Cas died, because he has a LOT more stuff to process in this scene. He’s surprised and unsure what to say or do, while also being overwhelmingly miserable and filled with dread over the fact that he’s about to lose someone he loves this much. I truly think that his performance does communicate love, I can’t say for sure whether that love is romantic or simply platonic, but it’s definitely love and that’s there on purpose.

Look I'm indifferent to Destiel. I'm not for it or against it and always have been. I love both Dean and Cas as characters and I love their relationship. And I'm devastated Cas died. But it boggles me how that scene can be interpreted as platonic. I'm saying I genuinely don't get it not that I'm trying to force other people to change their opinions. All the people who say it's platonic just say is it's platonic not why they think that. I would love for the people who think it's platonic to tell me their interpretation of that scene so I can understand their point of view but please don't just say it's platonic because Cas and Dean aren't a thing.
I can tell you clearly (I hope) why I think it's not platonic. By itself I agree that everything Cas said about how great Dean is and that he I loves him could be platonic. But Cas didn't say I love you because he was just saying goodbye (And yes I know he said it was goodbye) but because he was trying to experience a true moment of happiness to lure the Empty there and save Dean. He said he'd thought about it since he made the deal (so before this episode) but didn't know what his true happiness could be because the one thing he wanted he knew that he couldn't have. What was that thing and why couldn't he have it? Next he says that he realised his happiness isn't in having but in being, in saying. In other words, he's saying he could be truly happy just by saying what he wants to have. And then he tells Dean all the wonderful things about him and that he loves him. Cool. So why is telling Dean all that the equivalent of the thing that he wants that he can't have? Considering he already has Dean as a friend and brother? What else could he want but a romantic relationship with Dean? Which he knows he can't have because Dean doesn't swing that way. The only thing I can think of is he wanted to always be with Dean in whatever platonic or non platonic way they're depicting. But he couldn't cause he's an angel and Dean's human and their lifespans don't match. But he specifically says he loves him and not that he wished he could be with him forever, and anyway Cas could easily become human if he wanted too, so... And that's why I interpret it as not platonic. I'd love to hear how someone else interprets the scene as platonic. EDIT: I suppose you could also say Cas wanted Dean to know how great he is and stop putting himself down. But seriously, I wanted a best friend who thinks he's a wonderful person but since that's never gonna happen I guess I can be truly happy just telling him he's wonderful. Yeah...

People need to stop calling this homophobic, you’ve got a celestial being with ZERO sexual orientation (Cas is a being not a man, that’s just his vessel) and a guy that LITERALLY just got called out for bottling everything up and carrying all the weight on his shoulders.
I think in the beginning of the show Castiel was simply a celestial being, an angel of the Lord but as the show progressed I think we can see how much he changed emotionally- he even had sex with April because he became idk more human? More in touch with his feelings? Something had changed in him that’s for sure and as Cas said, it’s all because of Dean. He helped him understand that he doesn’t have to blindly follow order, he has a choice. The interaction between him and Dean was so different from anyone else he interacted with- he was always in Dean’s stuff, had issues with boundaries etc which can be interpreted as him not knowing how to act around people BUT he never did that with Sam. I think Castiel fell in love with Dean. Not in the beginning or in the middle of the journey but somewhere in between- as for Dean, I always thought he was straight but something about every time he dealt with the death of Castiel, the way he let Cas go through his stuff, the way he let his guard down with Cas made me think that he might not be completely straight (it can be viewed as platonic but in this scene when Cas said I love you to Dean, it felt like something finally clicked in Dean’s head- like he heard what he was so fucking scared of even admitting it to himself) and I mean, be it Lucifer or the angels, they all always talked about the “bond” they have and Dean always tensed
in those scenes- my personal opinion is that this scene wasn’t homophobic but it wasn’t meant to be sexual either, it wasn’t even a fan service, it was about telling someone that they are enough, that they are loved and are worth it and good by a person who he truly loves and cares about. Dean needed to hear it from Cas and Cas needed to be honest about his feelings. It was a beautiful, heartbreaking scene and a perfect way to end the relationship of these two.

I have a theory that this scene was Misha's last scene and he wasn't only speaking to Dean he was actually speaking to Jensen. It's why his voice wasn't the usually gravel-ish sound we've become so used to hearing from him. And a lot of people say Jensen/Dean looks uncomfortable. I think he's confused because he's not sure where Cas is going with this spiel. When he finally figures it out and hears, "I Love You' it dawns on him what Cas is about to do. He couldn't figure out that Dean himself was the source of his happiness because he can't see himself as someone who can bring happiness. When the Empty appears, look at Dean/Jensen, his eyes are glistening with tears. Dean didn't say it back because he didn't have the chance.

You know what would be an even nicer symmetry than all this? Dean pulling Cas out of the empty (Or Cas pulling himself out of the empty because Cas always has to fricking save himself). Because Supernaturals big theme is second chances, I mean that was the whole thing with why they stopped Billies plan, because she wanted to reverse all the second chances that people got. What if Cas' story, which hit all the marks, the hand-print, the goodbye Dean, doesn't end there, because, Supernatural really is about fighting for the people you love and finding second chances. And if anybody deserves that, it's Cas. Also wouldn't it be way more awesome to end on a "Hello Dean" or "Hey, Cas" (you know before everything goes to hell all over again)
It's probably not, everybody will probably die and the big thing will be Cas having found peace or whatever and I'll cry myself to sleep, but you know, we've been clowning for over ten seasons (and apparently that turned out right what the hell?!?!?!?) might as well do it for another two episodes. I honestly never thought Castiel was in love even during he’s final goodbye and only afterwards reading online comments it finally clicked. I support the idea of Cas having romantic feelings for Dean, but reveal was poorly set up with no real clues during the many years and seemed like a last minute idea the writers had. I hope that Dean has a chance to respond to Cas by the end of the season some how.
