- La Cumbre unveils the reality of what it means to live as an amputee in the developing world. In partnership with the Range of Motion Project we join world class mountaineer and wounded warrior Chad Jukes on a heartfelt journey to shed light on a public health issue affecting amputees world wide.
Kathy Pico, an Ecuadorian native lost her leg to Cancer at age 38. Reassessing her life's value, Kathy turned to alpinism. On July 28th, 2017 Kathy attempted Cayambe, Ecuador's 3rd tallest volcano towering at 18,996 ft tall alongside Chad Jukes and The Range of Motion Project.

No doubt she will someday summit but she already has more success than most of us every time she steps out the front door. She understands how to seek happiness in life in a way most people will never comprehend.

I enjoyed the aesthetic of this short film. However, I would call it a poetic spiritual meditation nested in a commercial, a triumph unfulfilled. At 2:35 she very clearly enters a church to pray and light votive candles, the filmmakers show her but not what she is looking at. They obviously sensor the context. It was as if they blurred the face or disguised the voice of her soul. Good film making is honest film making, don't filter reality to suit your perception.
It could be said that perhaps this choice was made to open this work to a wider audience. But that is the move of a merchant to commodify and sterilize experience, not the unrestrained creativity of an artist. The Range of Motion Project undertakes important work and deserves a better voice. The summit was not reached in many ways.
