- For Funk Freaks co-founders, Ivan "Debo" Marquez, David "Loser" Diaz and Robert "Luer" Marquez, funk music is a huge part of Orange County Chicanx culture. The DJ collective (and later record shop) was influenced by the trio's youthful memories listening to funk hits, passed down generation to generation. Discover how Funk Freaks began at a party 13 years ago and how they keep funk alive today.

My respects to all Funk Freaks members who keep the funk alive. I'm a 22 year old mexican wishing someday to travel to California to live the experience of being in a Funk Freaks party. Es un gran orgullo para mí que mis paisanos demuestren que lo que realmente significa para muchas personas la música funk y que esto no tiene que ver con cosas malas. Thank you homies, long life Funk Freaks and keep the funk the alive!
Born and raised in Santa Ana. Funk has deep roots in my city. I have 45s from the 1970s that were handed down to me. I have memories of the early 80’s when my family would wake up early Saturday mornings to watch and dance to the funk music on Soul Train. I remember my older siblings buying Zapp records when they first came out. The first record I ever owned was Midnight Star’s No Parking On The Dance Floor. True old school Santaneros know what I am talking about.
I miss Cali and my Chicano homies that kept funk alive! BIG UP HOMIES!!!
