@@nogoodwolf many years ago we were foster parents when the ‘not smacking’ law came in. I contacted the Social Services and the Adoption Charities that we fostered for (unpaid in those days I might add) and asked them to make alternative arrangements for the children in our care, we weren’t prepared to have different rules for different children, if we couldn’t treat them all the same then they had to go. At the time we had brothers aged around 3.5 and 18 months I think. One of their great delights was in posting duplo bricks, they went out the letter flap where the postie had fun pushing them back through, down the back of the radiators etc but, they also liked to put their bricks right inside the video recorder, right up to their elbows. Saying ‘no’ made no difference, reasoning that they might electrocute themselves was out, that left pulling their hand out, smacking it lightly and saying ‘no’ at the same time, but that was technically smacking. Not one foster child was stopped from coming to us and the brothers stayed put.

though i agree with you to an extent - i feel i must point out that in the UK - do gooders and the like have had most of a parents rights removed by law and most forms of discipline are now classed as abuse - including a thick ear for mouth and cheek, and grounding them and taking away their phones and net as a punishment.
This is also why the police cannot do much anymore in this country to deal with youth crime. their hands are tied almost as much as the parents now.
If you want to be realistic blame the do-gooders and the governments we have had. Not saying its not the parents fault but most of the blame should be laid where it belongs. Parents hands are tied with threat of being charged with abuse. Until the laws are reverted this kind of behaviour has become and will become more and more prevailent in the youth. and yes yelling at them is also classed as abuse now too - so even the teachers are tied up with what they can and cannot do to maintain discipline in schools now aswell.

Every single one of my classes had the “bad” ones in it. I always found a way to help them change their behaviour (at least in the class or place I was in charge of) and they always ended up liking me. I still hear from some of the former “bad” boys who are now grown up. I even got a great job later on from one of the parents who remembered how I treated their difficult son! And you are right; they were always looking for approval and acceptance and some of them were looking for unconditional love. I am not what we used to call a tomboy either. I am an American, and I can proudly say, none of my 4 would ever talk to another person the way this snot did. AND IF one of mine did, back in the day, I'd have wiped that smirk off my child's face if any of them had been that way! My youngest child is now 44 yrs old and still they are all respectful and wonderful adult human beings. But, then again, no child of mine would have, at that age, be hanging around that bunch of hood looking kids, mouthing off to adults, especially the King's Guard or anyone of authority.
It's obvious that child needs a good, firm, parental hand right on his arse!!! If he is from the USA, I am embarrassed! I can say that a lot of people from the USA are not rude, nor are their children. It seems like there are a few bad apples anywhere you go.

This is what happens when any government or do gooders think they know how to raise your kids better than you do and strip parents of their rights more and more to be parents.
Don't ever let this happen in your country, this will be the outcome.

My husband and I each spent about ten years in boarding schools in Ireland and the UK. And we fortunately had parents and family who cared. Disobedience was not a good option. I went to an all girl's Catholic Boarding school in the middle of nowhere in Ireland, run by genuine nuns in a genuine convent. My husband went to Harrow. Corporal punishment was not uncommon. That boy needs to be sent off to boarding school where he will be taught how to behave. Two of my cousins were sent to a military school in America, got a big dose of reality and an education and came back a few years later as decent human beings. There was strife in their home at the time. They had to be sent away because it was obvious they were being influenced by a very bad lot in Belfast. New Mexico seemed far enough and both of them realize they were removed to a military academy as a place of safety because the family loved them. Too many parents think they need to be friends with their children which is quite backwards. It produces brats.
