    He’s literally the man every woman hopes to end up with 💗: Humble, kind, dignified, respectful, hardworking, generous, faithful, loving and devoted, strong but soft, selfless, compassionate, courageous, prudent, responsible, honest, wise, loyal, simple, intelligent, thoughtful, Pius, gentle, constant, romantic and all around amazing. Dude, I can go on and on. Gabriel Oak is literally the unicorn of men.

      I don't think he's a unicorn. Especially when we remember that the novel was written by a man. There are great guys out there, only that they often go unnoticed and are overlooked by less modest men.

      @@j.r.r5863 You are right. Unfortunately it is very rare and decency is hardly appreciated in our society. It is enough to note what kind of romantic hero pop culture and some women have been promoting: selfish, violent, dominating and manipulative men as in Fifty Shades, After and 365 days.

      I love how you've been able to grasp this, no one here could :) you also noticed the roundness of the movie? that in the ending scene she wears the same clothes as in the opening one? yes, the thread can also be read in this key, that in the beggining she throws him a challenge ( "you will never be able to tame me") which he picks up and succesfully completes through kindness and trustworthiness then withdraws at the right moment alowing her to confront her feelings and the perspective of a life without him. :)

      The word tame is stupid. It's her choice after all and all this things he did when he withdrew it gave her mental pressure. That's unhealthy

    • @friky111x100
      @friky111x100 Před 2 lety +16

      @@elenawithacookie2221 it was her choice to use the word "tame", not mine... but to be honest I understand her choice of words because I feel the same. She is passionate and a free spirit and she doesn't want to be tied down by someone who doesn't inspire her, who will tell her what to do and take her freedom away (she thinks Gabriel is like this, and would force her to live a provincial life). I think what she is saying is if she were to settle down, she'd want someone who inspires her to choose him and not feel resentment for having to settle down. She is not opposed to settling, she does want to find someone to love and who loves her, but she doesn't want to be told what to do. She wants it to be her choice, she wants him to be such an excellent choice that she'll feel no resentment or disappointment whatsoever for "settling" for him. This is what she calls "tame me", and this is what he does. With steady patience he shows her he would not curtail her freedom or ask her to be less than what she is, so she realises that he is the person she can rely on and who loves just the way she is and is only asking for the same. He "tames" her because she has allowed it to be so, because she chose it.

    Gabriel: "If I knew you...that you would let me love you and marry you..."
    Bathsheba: "But you'll never know..."
    Gabriel: "Why not"?
    Bathseba: "Because you... never ask...Ask me..."
    Next moment: Gabriel reaches for her, pulls her into his arms and presses his lips to hers. What a long awaited moment...His sweet aching words now a memory: "Let me love you and marry you..." Oh Gabriel, a girl can dream...of a man like you...

    i never thought anyone could play gabriel oak as good as alan bates in 60s version , but matthias schoenaerts has nailed it for me.i love thomas hardy novels and most novels have been made into films one being Tess of the Derbervilles, Hardy had some terrific charactors in his books, and the films have donevthem justice.

    I love Carey Mulligan a lot - but I just didn't think she fit this role as perfectly as one could. The last Far From The Madding Crowd had a better performance I think - more natural, real, explosive, vivid - this just wasn't real enough for me. I still like her a lot though - I just think there could have been better, more real actresses/performances - like Lizzy Bennet in Pride And Prejudice the TV one, or Emma Thompson in her movies - someone like that.

      On paper it would seem that Carey would be perfect but for some reason she is not and I don't know why.
      But Schoenarts is definitely perfect and the final scene is brilliant.
