These discussions about these pieces are wonderful, a tremendous companion to the videos of the pieces themselves. I can't decide whether to watch the discussion first and then the listen to the piece or the other way around -- so I've done it all -- listened to the piece, then the commentary and then back to the piece. Thank you both for doing these!
What a treat! I only recently discovered David Russell's performance of the 2nd Lute Suite, and I was awestruck. Hearing the musician discuss this same performance really adds to my overall appreciation of it. Thanks to the Omni Foundation for this.
Maestro Russell seems to be such a gentle person, although he is one of the greatest guitar players ever, he discusses his approach to the music so directly, so "uncocky". A real pleasure to listen both him and of course his beautiful rendering of BWV 997
Totally agree about the capo. The sound is splendid and the bass felt very full. This is turning out to be one of the great guitar events of our time.
I note that David didn't ever get around to answering the question (at 3:12) of whether he used a capo when he played Bach's 2nd Lute Suite "back then."
Both pleasantly nerdy but also fun to listen for the layman. Another great one, thanks for making this happen and sharing!
The interviews are a enlightening as the performances: thank you!
Me dieron ganas de volver a escuchar la suite 😄
Sweet thank you 🙏
Hi David ! Great work !..In my opinion your version is perfect,!!...beautiful sound, great tecnique, and emotion.
I know you speak perfect spanish, and it's my native language, but maybe it's better in english just in case D.Tenenbaum wants to read the comments... !
I'm a fan of Bach, and studied most of his works and suites .This one is one of my favorites...
most of the fingerings you use are very similar to the fingerings I use in this piece.
You've always have been one of my favorites Guitarrists.!!!
And I remember we've met in London, when I was doing my classical guitar training at the Guildhall School of Music in 1982 aprox. And i went to a concert you gave ,I think it was at the Royal Festival Hall, can't remember exactly if it was the "Purcell room",the Queen Elisabeth or the Royal Festival Hall,...wonderful performance ,and then I went backstage and we talked for a while...I'll never forget that ! You were very kind and humble!
I live in Madrid, and I'm from Argentina, but I've been living in Madrid since 1997.I think you live in Andalucia,
if i'm not wrong...Anyway I've been working all my life as a Proffesional guitarrist, but although i studied the classical training,I never dare to aproach a classical career very difficult and very demanding,so I've always worked as a session musician on the Pop-Rock department.
Well ,some day I would like to meet you again ! It would be great ! and maybe to have a couple of lessons
Thanks for your Art !
Un abrazo !
A very interesting/clarifying interview. The performance in question is all the more remarkable in overcoming the problems of re-orientation for left-hand fingers (and arm etc. to a lesser extent) due to use of a capo, which would be alleviated by use of a alto guitar in G, of course.
Russell is the GOAT.
I think J.S.B. is it - ;-)
Meeting of the Davids. I would love to see someone play Bach works in their original keys.
Even the auto tranlsator bot says Russell owned the suite.. (uses the box for Bach and loot for lute)
👏👏👏👏👏
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏
Where can i find Mr. Russell's transcription? Thanks!
An actual artist finds the degree process stifling ? Shouldn't be a surprise. Still no need to think about that, back to capo talk by the real experts.
Al final cualquiera que pueda lee una partitura y ejecutar una obra no se reconoce por la ténica si no por la ejecución
