My tutorial for simplified book folding www.diypics.com... has produced a lot of questions. This video is an effort to answer most questions about book folding art.
Also, I wrote a book to explain everything in detail. You can buy my book "Folded Book Art Made Easy" on Amazon here: amzn.to/2uksNYQ This book has 10 free striped patterns!

I just wanted to comment on a few questions here that don't seem to have been answered. You can use Microsoft Word to create the template if you don't have Photoshop. Use the insert WordArt tool, write the word you want to use in your desired font....then select shape fill. Choose the pattern fill and find the stripe pattern. I also would recommend you go for a thinner outline too.
Also to ensure the word is central in the book I recommend you start in the middle of the book rather than the beginning. First find the middle of your book...then the middle of your word. Fold the right hand side of your word to the right and the left hand side of your word to the left. You should end up with equal pages at the beginning and end of the book if you haven't used all the pages to create the word. Hope this helps :)
damn Marta is coming through with the amazing instruction, more informative then a majority of folding videos!
wow i never thought this thing existed. i randomely clicked on this video. im so overwhelmed. im not getting corredct words to praise your work...awesome
Now I know what to get my step mother (whom I love very much) for Christmas because she has everything and really appreciates thoughtful gifts. Thank you!
I need to do the letter " B " please help me .....
Thank u
Finally someone shows how to do E's!!!
Janine-I just found this art today and think that it is fascinating! I have never seen anything like it! Thank you so much for sharing!
Ruby Dee You are most welcome! Hope you give it a try!
thank you!! as a total beginner I had no idea what to do at all. tried so many other 'tutorials' this made it all so simple :)
Once again thank you.
Katy
Thanks for your talent, skill, insight, and ability to teach. I am creating an anniversary present for my wife for our 1st anniversary; your video tutorial has been very helpful. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you very much...... I couldn't comprehend how to fold the pages against the template lines and you really helped me fathom it out 👍
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much! I have always wondered how this was done and thought the pages were being cut. Super cool!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My boyfriend and I are celebrating our first Christmas together next month so I want to do something special and I think I might do something like this!
I think you should!
Just watched your updated tutorial and just wanted to confirm that in order to fold a letter/image with more than 2 points to fold, you would simply use three of more folds per line?
Ooo. This seems really interesting. I might try it with some old book I find at goodwill...
Thanks Marta, you have really helped me out.
Wow, thanks so much, I finally get how to do it. Now my 11 year daughter can make her Art project with confidence.
It looks awwwweeeeseeooooom and I'm giving it a thumbs up
I am really grateful for your altruism . I have puzzled in my head(not having a piece to hand) looking at this type of art and tried and tried to reverse engineer them. I have to be honest I doubt if I could give away my secrets. . Now the big question....would I have the patience or time to make one ? Perhaps but I would never go into competition with you, bad karma if I did:) Thank you very, very much
+slicedpage That's exactly how I figure it out: reverse engineered the finished product. And came up with a simpler solution!
That was bloody awesome, thank you.
I do not understand what you are using as your guideline to fold the letters
Thnx my friend needed this for a project
very nice video. Much more detailed than many I have seen. Explains well!!! Great job
i have a old English textbook I never read, I'll surely try this!
also, can I just draw out a pattern instead of printing one?
Marta - you are SO generous.
Thank you for making such a detailed video. I found it incredibly helpful and practical.
Love your work!
Oh in the doing its easy to how!. If you want to fit a large word on a letter size the lines will be closer together and harder to see. S if you spread that on 2 sheets you can see better.
Thank you for the tutorial, however, I don't get what you mean by the "E" when you do every third one over?
Wow, it's the first time i see this kind of art! It's fantastic!
if I find a big book that I don't like, maybe I'll try! :D
Great video, thanks.
woooow. is incredible , I 'll try but not if it can achieve. . congratulations is amazing
Now I can do something with my 50 shades of grey books
Ass
no you should just burn that garbage
@@silverjmm Rude
This is wonderful TFS
Finally, twilight has a purpose in this world
Brilliant tutorial Very helpful. I've just popped along to your page and just wondered How you use the pre striped paper x
Sooooooo wonderful handmade dear....but is there any other thing can be used instead of books???
I love the video and the instruction but the music was distracting. Just a thought. Thanks for showing me this!
How do you have the mental strength to do this!?!? I don't have the guts to fold the page of a book to mark my place ಥ_ಥ
Asriel Dreemurr André rieu
I just buy a second copy of the book and even then its hard for me to fold a single page
how many stripes per letter? i saw the video on the link but didn't quite understand how to do it :s
Hello, i just wanted to ask if you can close the book properly after it's finished. Thanks for posting your tutorial, this will make an excellent birthday present!
FrozenFire1997 No, you can't close the book like before. It's a new piece of art. : )
i have a genuine question: when you did the first "E", there comes a part when you would have to fold a single paper to show in three spots (the top, middle, and bottom lines). How would you do that?
Thank you.
for this beautiful video.
How many time does it take to make one book like the one on this video? It's really mindblowing... Good job!
That book took me about a week doing it maybe an hour each day.
why you did not remove the half of the left pages? this is a big help!
Hi Marta. Thanks so much for your tutorials, they're great! I've managed to get my words/letters using your 'stripes on photoshop' youtube tutorial, and have done these all as 10 inch width, 7 inch high. Will this size work for a normal paperback book?
Thanks!
Great idea, really creative! Instead of cutting the remaining pages out and gluing them in the front, could you not do the whole thing starting from the middle and working your way out from there? That would leave you with the same amount of pages back and front and they would be in their original order. ;-)
Great thank you. Wish u didn't speed up at the most important part doing the 2 levels. A close up of it would be good still not to sure how to do the little bits in some letters.
Great tutorial. On the long, simple parts (like the back of the E) do you only fold the black lines or do you fold both black and white please?
I loved your video. I have a question. What font and font size do you usually use for your book folding?
buenas como hace la plantilla en photoshop hay algún tutorial. muy buen video
Tengo un tutorial para hazerlo en MS Word. Busquelo en mi canal
So do we fold the white lines and black lines? (White line represents one page and black line represents the next page?
Theolyn Warrender
Yes
I'm thirteen years of age , I have made my book folding pattern in photoshop and got a book with the right number of pages. Thank you very much for this very easy to follow tutorial . But I'm encountering a small problem : no matter how much I try and convince myself that I will never want to read this book, I simply cannot start folding it as I am 100% sure i will regret it because I love books so much :(
Mary Moore I think you should read whatever book you're folding. Thing is, you can still read it after it's folded :)
After reassurance from my mom that after 25 years on the bookshelf she has only made it to page 19 , I felt OK to start........will keep you posted!
Sweet! I want to see the results!
Question for simplifying this process. Since adding the lines in the characters to represent each page, and you're not doing the complete full pixel character because of the optical illusion our eyes do to outline the end product to see the characters in folded pages, why not just type the characters in a imaged editor (MS Paint or similar should do), then compress the characters by resizing it horizontally to fit the width of the book when closed. Print out the "squeezed final printout" and take an exacto knife or pencil, and out line the pages on the side of the book. You're theoretically creating laying out the same foundation for each page as you would the manual method shown in this video.
Eyeballing the printout in your video, if you were to fill in the gaps in the characters by realigning the edges of each black printed part of the letter, you would (again theoretically) get the same compressed/horizontally-resized letters. I'll see if I can post a response video to prove this, that way it would be quicker and easier (plus more efficient) then to mark your placement on a paper and continue to move the guide page in and out of the book.
I was thinking the same thing
A+ for the Pride and Prejudice music ;)
hi im struggling to find out how or where to get the font with the lines. Is there a setting on the computer or is it something I can google the font for?
That's really good well done:)
thanks!
No problem your very good😆
When u say that book was 600 pages that means 300 right? Coz theres numbers back to back of the page?
Yes I want one so bad
How do you know how many folds for each letter and therefore which template to use/how many pages your book needs to have? (When I say template I mean the striped templates you provided for different sized books)
Damn! That's awesome!
wow this is incredible..how long does this take you?? I am only seeing the very first letter folding...I love this art but not sure I would try it! :)
Can you make a video on how you MADE the template?
Lindsay Kallgren
I did. One using Photoshop and the other using Word.
How did you cut those last pages out? And how did you make it so they were all together on the other side? Did you glue each page so they wouldn't fall apart?
Nathaniel Kiger I would imagine you'd place the cut pages together between 2 heavy books and/or clamps with the cut edges sticking out slightly from the side. Paint some wood glue along the edges of pages and a few hours later once dry run a line of glue where you want the pages to go in the book and insert cut pages. I think.... but what do I know :)
prejudice compliments for his books, true masterpieces! I'd love to do one with the name LUCIO can help me please ?? thank you
Paola De Frenza Yes. Go to my etsy shop (Pomp and Whimsy) and buy a custom pattern
thank you
The anticipation was grueling. 😫 Only because I had no idea if how!
How long time does it take? LOVE IT
Many hours. Depends on the size of the word.
On the long, simple parts (like the back of the E) do you only fold the black lines or do you fold both black and white?
Do I fold along the black or white lines? Please Help!!
you suck
so cool ♥☻
Agreed!
How do you know how many pages you need for how long the word is?
when you print the letters, do you need to put black and white marks?
Any Font style will do?
+DIYMarta do you know where I could get a pre-made template, like a website or something? It would be great if you did
Would you be willing to make me a template with the word "Travel"?
Loved the video! You're a great teacher. :) I just don't have Photoshop.
You can use Microsoft Word to create the words with stripes...Use the insert WordArt tool, write the word you want to use....then select shape fill. Choose the pattern fill and find the stripe pattern. I also would recommend you go for a thinner outline too
I would love to see a video of you showing how to do this on Microsoft.
Hi there I love you tutorial. I am going to attempt to do this for my sister birthday in the name of gemma. I have read the comments and you have said that I need a book with 350 pages that's fine. What I am struggling with is making the line on Photoshop. I have Photoshop elements 13 and I have played with the eaves option but I can not get it done. What I was wondering is if someone could possible make me a template and email it to me.
How could you still do this without using photoshop? I don't have it on my computer.
This is amazing. How do I make the patterns?
I have a couple other videos that explain how to make your own pattern.
Thanks for this great tutorial! My question is about words with 3 parts at one time-a capital K or E. Do you fold every third page for each line? Like you fold every other page for a top and bottom? Thanks!
That is correct, Janine. Each stripe only gets one fold. So you'd fold the top bit, move one stripe over, fold the middle bit, move one stripe over and fold the bottom bit. It's tricky keeping track of a three-level character because the tick marks may not look lined up. Just pay close attention and it'll work fine.
Thank you so much!
Who else came here from man vs CZcams

mine didnt come out AS cool but its still awesome!

how many pages do we have to fold for each letter? i want to gift one to my brother on his wedding .. what word should i take .. please suggest one
Where and How do you make the font on the paper?
I make striped patterns using photoshop
@@Diypics Thank you very much. I am doing a school project and this makes it hopefully possible to do my own name!
I want to do this, but idk it seems easy and a bit complicated too...
+kari cervantes You'll regret it if you never try it. You can get a cheap pattern for a heart here: www.etsy.com/listing/242341480/folded-heart-pattern-1-pattern-3-ways
+DIYMarta I love my books so much to do this to them lol but I will try it with a friend, I just shared the video with her! :D
+DIYMarta What do the patterns require that we can't make ourselves except for the lines? Thanks in advance.
+Stenlan That is the most important part--making the stripes for the number of pages that you want.
DIYMarta
Thank you. So if I can do that myself, that's all I need?
question: if i am doing one that only has three letters, what number of pages would you suggest i choose? i'm trying to make it as easy as possible 😂
Sarah Ricketts
If you're doing lower case, I'd go with 250 pages. If you're doing caps, 500 pages.
font style? pls
What do you do with all the extra pages in the back? I would like to create one, but i think with the extra pages in the back kinda looks tacky.
Questions You count before you start and divide by two so you have as many blank pages left before and after.
can you clarify the different color stripes purpose. Do I fold on every stripe or every other stripe?
Fold on both black and white stripes.
How did you get the picture all spaced out like that? Is there a Greek program you use?
How many pages would you recommend for a 4 letter word?
Plz do one for Dellyanne
Dellyanne Jimenez That would take a mighty big book (900 pages +). If you still want a pattern, contact me on my Etsy store (see link above)
How many pages would you recommend for one with two letters and a heart in the middle of the letters?
Oh, 300+ pages.
how did u make the paper u used to guide u?
Do you fold on both the black and white?
Katie Larson Yes, you do
when book folding what is an insert page please 😥😥x
Kerry Higgins
Are you referring to something I mentioned? Sometimes I insert a fake page or more when the book has too few pages on its own.
Like seriously how does one do this! This looks so difficult! I just can't process anything she says
-Rob Czar
+Dusk Lemon right?
Dusk Lemon
Who the actual fuck is Rob Czar
Chloe
Oh
Chloe
Alright, I'll do that :D
is there any way you can do Numbers as for 40th for a birthday please.
yes. go to my Etsy shop and order a custom pattern
Someone should show this to Rob
I am doing this for my art GCSE exam in 5 weeks lol
That's awesome!
can you glue the pages? I am using a speciAl book for someone and the pages are thin like a bible.
+Patricia Anderson Hm. Good question. I would not glue the papers. You could just fold two pages for every stripe. That would help "fatten" it up.
how did you get the letters to show so well? my letters seem to not be well defined with spaces where each fold was made and it makes it hard to read unless far away.
Carlos Mora Fold both black and white stripes.
Hi Marta
Finally I made book with my daughters name with a heart inbetween. All thanks to you. Would love to share the photo. Where could I send the picture?
Also just wondering how to make pinstripes inside silhouette?
Roopal Shroff Oooh, I would love to see it! Please upload your picture to my Facebook page /DIYandSAVE
Thank you!
Roopal Shroff To turn a silhouette into a pattern, download one of my striped backgrounds on diypics(dot)com and follow the same directions as for a word. Put the silhouette in a new layer, select everything outside the silhouette, then go to the background layer and hit "delete." Hide the silhouette layer and what's left if your striped pattern.
DIYMarta Thanks for the info. Will try and update you.
Also how to make a heart with a letter inside. Eg. Heart shape with R inside. I have been trying but cldnt get it right. Please advice. Thanks
Roopal Shroff I made you a pattern of a heart with an R inside and you can find it on Etsy for 2.99
www.etsy.com/listing/236056578/folded-book-pattern-heart-r
DIYMarta Thanx. Just out of curosity, whatever is the design I have to move forward one stripe for each level(even if there are 5 or 6 level)..right.
do you only fold the black lines ? or both ?
Ricky Laos
Both black and white
How do you do •12 in book folding got stuck don't know how to work it out can you show me how to do it thanks lorraine
lorraine salter Everything has to be striped. If you're folding the dot, it should have 4 o 5 stripes. Fold it the same way you'd fold anything else. In this case, the top and bottom folds will almost touch. Also, ignore any spaces between letters or objects.
hya all want make this for my mum.. but cant fine how do all the letters .. can anyone help and is it easy to do how long
thxs
