Re: Zero is one of the most interesting isekai anime that has come out in the past few years. The story revolves around Natsuki Subaru being transported from Earth to a new world and he is granted one simple power: "Return By Death". Subaru must use this newfound power to save those he cares about, such as Emilia, Rem, Ram, Petra, Otto and Garfiel and more.
Who is Satella and why did she grant subaru this power? What is the motivation behind the witch cult which have members such as Petelguese the sin archbishop of sloth? These are some of the questions I'll tackle on this channel, I hope you enjoy it and most importantly also enjoy season 1 and season 2 of Re: zero and hopefully it does well enough to warrant a third season covering arc 5 (Season 3 re: zero).

Yes he loves her but I feel like it’s not platonic (like love for family and a best friend), since the love for his friends is also different from his love for Rem and especially Emilia.
If anything, I think he loves both romantically, but either 1. He doesn’t realize how romantic his feelings for her are or 2. (Being the most likely/obvious) His romantic love for Emilia is just far greater and different than his romantic love towards Rem

It’s pretty common for a person to have romantic feelings for more than one person, in fact, it happens all the time. So I do believe that Subaru has romantic feelings for both Emilia and Rem and there are the only two women that will always have Subaru’s heart. He may have chosen Emilia in the main story, but abandoned Emilia for Rem on two different occasions in the IF stories.

Personally I think Subaru loves Rem platonically but sometimes when you have a platonic relationship with the opposite gender you could sometimes falter and with Rem being persistent he can sometimes act up. It’s just natural human behavior but he tries his best to stay true to Emilia and his original feelings and not to sway from them. Of course both opinions have valid takes on them and I respect yours.

Even Emilia and the other Characters could see it that her position in Subaru's heart is not inferior to Emilia. You could say that Subaru's love for Rem is a bit more platonic than Emilia, which I cannot completely deny but Subaru did directly tell Rem before the white whale battle that he also has feelings for Rem when he is near her. I would say it's a mix of romantic and platonic feelings for Rem but not exactly sure what the ratio may be.
Also at around 3:40, Subaru didn't reject Rem. There was nothing to accept or reject (but the light novel says internally that he accepted Rem's feelings) since Rem did not ask him to her boyfriend or anything like that. Rem was helping Subaru reassuring Subaru on who he is and keeping him on the right path.

Although saying "I love [someone]" after someone else gave a love confession was painful to hear, he never specifically said something like "Sorry, I am not interested in you / You're not my type" to Rem.
Edit: I'm currently re-reading Vol. 6 Chapter 5 "From Zero" Section 4 and Vol. 7 Chapter 3 "The Battle of the White Whale" Section 2 to try to find what you mean.
Vol. 6 Chapter 5 Section 4 when Subaru said "I love Emilia", the narrative after that says that Subaru has accepted Rem's feelings. Well, I'll copy/paste what this part says.
_So he wanted to be the Subaru Natsuki she loved so much._
_“-I…like Emilia.”_
_“-Yes.”_
_Seemingly knowing all along, Rem smiled and nodded at Subaru’s confession._
_He knew full well how cruel he was being to that smile, that gentleness, as he continued, “I want to see Emilia’s smile. I want to be in her future as a help to her. Even if she told me I’m in the way, not to come back… I want to be by her side.”_

Those two entire scenes involving this during the whale fight. Before it, and after with Subaru flat out confessing.
Yes he may have stronger feelings for Emilia (unfortunately), but he does love rem. And the way he acts with the constant "warm" feelings in his chest, blushing, etc are not normal ways of describing a "friendly/platonic" type of love. It's attraction lol.
It's not uncommon for people to be in this situation either. Love triangles are a real thing. You can have feelings for two people, but one takes the stronger attachment. It's essentially personal mental confliction. And some people genuinely feel bad for it as well.

@@niftylittlename It doesn't say that they were joking. It only says that Rem brings up that up in a light-hearted manner. It's not the same as joking. People often say some serious stuff with a playful tone in order to not make the atmosphere too heavy for the other person. They say it so light-heartedly exactly because they are very serious about it. The topic of marriage is very serious, which is the reason she tries to soften it up with her playful tone. In case Subaru didn't agree to the proposal, they both could brush it off as a joke without making things too awkward.
But thankfully, Subaru also liked her idea and agreed to it. And then they both promise to do their best with persuading Emilia about it. That's when the narrator states that Rem put together a bit of her spirit and smiled, indicating that Rem is serious about all of this. And Rem wouldn't go so far as to try and convince Emilia if she was just joking.
Then we have the carriage scene where Subaru tells Emilia that he wants to be with both Rem and Emilia. You can see that he is actually confronting Emilia about it. It never was a joke. Both Subaru and Rem were serious about it.
Given all of that above, I would be an idiot to not be sure about them being serious.

In Capella scene, she takes his strongest feelings and makes fun of them. The point was to show how disgusted Capella was by his feelings towards Emilia. That's all. Nothing here says about Emilia being his only interest. There is no point in Capella bringing up Rem as well. She already showed her disgust towards romance using Emilia, so bringing up Rem would be just repeating herself.
And with Yorna, he just says that he already has a girl he likes. The point is just that he already has someone in his heart. It would be rather weird for him to deliberately point out that he has two girls in his heart at the same time. No one asked him the exact number of girls he liked. The only point was to tell Yorna that there is no place for her in his heart. That's it.
And of course he would deny Otto's words. He still didn't admit his feelings towards Rem until the moment under Flugel Tree. Denying Otto was just him still not being able to accept his feelings towards Rem. Even after the white whale battle, the narrator specifically states that his love for Rem was genuine.
About Al scene. Al asks Subaru why he is treating Rem as she was his wife. Is that what you are referring to? Subaru had no issue with Al telling him that. But it's true that Subaru starts feelings uneasy right after that. But his concern wasn't about himself being coupled with Rem, but Al's intense questioning of Rem. The reason is because always-laid-back Al suddenly gets very serious when asking him about Rem. That's why he feels uneasy. He was wondering why Al suddenly got so serious. I can read Japanese, so I'm looking at the original text. If you have issues, it's just a mistranslation on your part.
And as to your last question. Rem doesn't have to be mentioned every time there is a topic of romance. Emilia is his main girl, which is the reason she is always mentioned first everywhere. It would be weird to bring up Rem every single time. It will not change Subaru's feelings towards Rem either. We have already been told about feelings Subaru and Rem have for each other. There is just no need to bring it up every time.
As you can see, all of these issues are related to you not being able to understand the story.
Tappei also once answered a question about what would happen to Subaru if he wasn't isekaid. The answer was that he would eventually marry a cute girl with a heart like Rem's. Then they would live happily ever after and so on. This goes to prove that Subaru is just naturally attracted to girls like Rem. You cannot deny this because it is outright stated by Tappei himself. This is the end of our debate.
But honestly, I didn't expect much from an Emilia fanboy. There are tons of sensible Emilia fans who can recognise Subaru's and Rem's feelings towards each other, but there is also a delusional portion of that fanbase that consists of people like you. I also like Emilia, but it's a shame that an inadequate like you is also a part of this fandom.

Or how Subaru refers to his nightly visits to rem as tryst?
Or the scene where the witch of lust used her authority to manifest as the Subaru most wanted and it was rem?
Subaru sees many people as his soul mates that he feels attached to forever. Rem is the one who saw him as the hero he wished to be and strived to deserve it. Emilia is the pure maiden he fell in love with and makes him want to be better than he ever could be to deserve her love.
Let's not forget about the fact that during the trials, the witch of ludt presented herself as Rem and not emilia

Honestly speaking, I don't care _WHO_ he loves or ends up with as long as he gets dozens of years of downtime after the literal hell that is the main story. His mindset doesn't feel healthy, human or relatable. It hasn't for several Arcs now.

I say he does it. His remorse at the thought of losing her at the end of the battle with the White Whale and his relief at seen her awake again speaks for how he feels.

Well i didn't know that final arc 3 line existed but i think that about sums it up. I feel like i was the one that started this by making a sligh comment about it, but i didn't expect there to be so much against it. Either way i also thought the Satella one was interesting. It's 46% yes and 54% no. On top of that people seem to think he only loves her inside the shadow garden which is very false especially now with arc 7 being a thing.
If i had to rank the arcs in terms of Subaru and his main waifu of that arc it would be: Arc 1 Subaru and Emilia, Arc 2 Subaru and Emilia, arc 3 Subaru and Rem, Arc 4 Subaru and Satella, Arc 5 Subaru and Emilia, Arc 6 Subaru and Emilia, Arc 7 Subaru and Satella.
This makes sense tbh.

Subaru was about to kiss Rem for real right after the confession scene, if not for Felix intervention (which was a good thing, considering they were not alone, and some people knew about his official claim on Emilia).
Also in alternate route they had their first kid immediately after eloping. So I say, there's way more that just platonic relationship between them. Well, *Was*. I'm not sure where Tappei is going to take it in Arc 7, though occasionally they go through the same dialogues from Arc 2 when Rem was kinda getting warm to him.

Sure, Subaru was "nooooot" about to kiss Rem since this narrative that exists in the novel doesn't exist in your own headcanon. :P
@ANW He was. Also, Subaru, in the Witch's Tomb after the Second Trial, was about to let the Carmilla Rem kiss him until he realized it a fake (also, Camilla turned into Rem since that was the person Subaru wanted to see the most in the moment).
And Subaru kissed Rem many times in the Sloth/Rem IF timeline (the _Re:IF kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu_ light novel) and built a family with her with two children in that alternate timeline, but you could argue that was because the only close connection Subaru had left after abandoning everyone else in that timeline was Rem. Sure, it's non-canon to the main story but still an official work by Tappei. Before that, Tappei has made a short side story called _Fragments: Rem Natsuki_ that was part of Volume 9 of the Light Novels, and while it was briefly easter egged in Season 2 Episode 1 of the anime (you'll see it if you CZcams search the "Rem vs. Gluttony" Crunchyroll video and x0.25 playback speed at 2:12, and 3 images will quickly flash by), _Fragments: Rem Natsuki_ also received a full manga adaptation in Chapter 51 of Re:Zero's Daisanshou (Arc 3) manga.
Setting official IF stories aside, I supported Subaru and Emilia since the beginning and even though I have grown attached to Subaru and Rem since Arc 3, my thoughts on Subaru and Emilia haven't changed and I would still like to see their relationship continue to grow. At the same time, once Rem remembers who she is, I would also like to see Subaru's and Rem's relationship regrow from there and see how the three could sort out their relationships and form a compromise with their relationships. Yes, I support all three together but I also support them individually.

He definitely romantically loves her. He does consider that if Rem would be his second wife and wanted to know if Emilia would be fine with it. (Which she is not fine with it.) (PS. I want Subaru to end up with Emilia if some of you think I'm a Rem stan lmao.)
Watching the video further, Jakez does make good points why Subaru's love for rem is not romantic but instead platonic. I'm kinda now on the fence on this.

Hard to say at times, more than anything it tends to feel more like he himself doesn't truly understands what he feels for rem.
Like at times he says stuff like she's my girl, I'm her hero, or when she woke up, he was mentally dialoguing about how he loves certain things about her.
But I feel like he's more than anything ignorant to what his genuine feelings are for her. I think it's romantically but he doesn't fully realize it yet if anything.

Actually he is motion relying on Rem. Rem is his Pillar of mental and strength. Now I think that he is obsession about Rem. She is now important than anything. This Arc is about Rebuilding Rem, her Feelings for Subaru and maybe about Subaru accept her new Person too. Even now when Rem recover her memories, she is new Person now. It likes Emilia when she recovered her Memories. But in that Case Subaru easy to accept Emilia new Person but maybe Rem is different. Subaru is obsession with Rem in the Past. SHE is center Pillar of his Strength even in darkest time in Arc 6. It is not easy to part with her. Rem now is not the Rem who would follow him anywhere and follow his order. Yeah he does. Although I don't see it as being very genuine. His love for her now pretty much mirrors that of his love for Emilia during the first few arcs. The love is still there, but it's heavily fueled by his own feelings towards himself.
The thing I think most forget, is while love is the number one component to thus story.

I think that envy is a leading factor that is in the background. A certain witch we occasionally see, but her witch factor has a reason.
Primarily a role in love, Re:zero plays a major role in itself. By a small margin, love for others comes next. In arc 7, the conversation between Al and Subaru seems revealing to me. Al tells him to become a hero for everyone and carry "heroic dreams" forever, but Subaru says that he has no desire to become a hero for everyone and soon he says that he is Rem's hero (if you understand what that means, then no problem), who saw him this way. Accordingly, the "heroic dreams" associated with Subaru are not related to what Al means.
If we talk about envy, then yes, I am more than sure that this will play a role in the future. Satella is the witch of envy. One would assume that Satella is constantly telling Subaru "I love you, I love you, I love you" with the intent of getting Subaru to love her because she is jealous... But it all breaks down to a conversation at a tea party with witches, from which the reason for Satella's words is learned: Subaru must love and save himself with everyone else he holds dear. But it is possible that Satella can have two or more purposes.

Every person on earth has the ability to love more than one person romantically in their lifetime. A lot of people fall in love, get married, get divorced, and either get remarried or find another partner without marriage. It definitely won’t be completely out of character for Subaru to either eventually grow romantic feelings for Rem in the future or openly admit to himself that he already had romantic feelings her before. - He has stated in all versions of the story (novels, anime, and manga) to Crusch (after White Whale Battle) and Witch of Envy (when WoE was taking over the Sanctuary) that he "has a Number One [Emilia] and a Number Two [Rem] in his heart with no room for anyone else".
- At the start of Season 2 / Arc 3 Interludes, Subaru told Emilia in the carriage, "The thing is, Rem loves me as much as I told you how much I love you, so..." This is a follow-up to the novel-exclusive line at 4:45. Even though Subaru and Rem were playing around, Subaru actually tried suggesting it to Emilia until he received "Who's Rem?" Subaru essentially accepted Rem's proposal even though they were joking around to pass time until the White Whale showed up. Even the narration said that Subaru gets strange feelings when Rem is around. He has romantic feelings for both Rem and Emilia but both were built differently. With Emilia, it's like a high school crush that never ends. With Rem, it gradually grew as they bonded and he released all the feelings he had for Rem at 5:25 when she was pretending to die (and they were about to kiss in that scene in the novels until Ferris interrupted).

Diving into the warzone I see. You worded this video very well. In my personal opinion I believe that Subaru will always default to Emilia. However I don't think this means his feeling towards aren't romantic however this also doesn't mean they are. This situation is very muddy, but when all is said and done it will prob end up with it being platonic simply because it is impossible for Rem and Subaru to be happy together. There's many things that point toward this in the story and I have basically accepted this and any hope I had . I really hope Subaru and Rem's relationship is able to get explored more tho. They have a very nice dynamic that I really want to see explored a lot more but due to the fact that Rem got erased and everything that I hoped to see went to crap who knows what will happen at this point. I'm just glad to see Rem again in arc 7. Sucks that things have to be this way but its all a part of this amazing story and I hope Rem gets some justice for all of this at least. She's been through quite a lot.

You can harbour romantic feelings for multiple people while still remaining loyal to one person. That's sort of the basis of most love triangles, which is what Subaru, Rem and Emilia are in.
He loves Emilia enough to reject Rem's confession instead of giving in. But there's still plenty of instances where he shows far stronger feelings for her than a platonic love would allow for.
The confession rejection is likely backed by his feelings for her at that time actually being platonic, but they could have changed over time when you consider everything that happens. Just because it was platonic at one point doesn't mean they cannot become romantic later on.

I think that the meaning of a Platonic Love that the people are using now is already changed because of anime/manga/novels during the times.
For our dear Greek Philosopher, Platon, what we call Platonic Love is the concept of loving something invisible, untouchable and unreachable such as a idea(ideal), dream, feelings or a thought.
So, seeing Subaru’s love for both of them from this perspective we can see that Emilia has her own ideals and dreams of a kingdom free of race discrimination while Rem has nothing like a dream or an ideal or a desire of leaving a mark in the world.

Why is this even a question? We already know that the answer is Yes, he does. He literally confronted Emilia about it before they got to the sanctuary and told her his feelings for Rem and that they are on an equal level as those for her. Also, Emilia can see how much he cares for Rem from his actions and in arc 6 even said how Subaru might want to leave Emilia behind once Rem wakes up, because he would want to be with her, and Subaru couldn't reassure Emilia that this won't be the case, cause he didn't know himself how he would feel once it happens. Emilia then got little jealous and said she won't let Subaru give Rem all his attention and that she will try to make him look her way too.
There are many moments that can prove what his feelings for Rem are, and they truly are different. Those feelings are being developed gradually throughout the story while the feelings for Emilia started as a crush on her from his love for silver haired girls. Another way to look at it, Subaru fell in love with Rem after he got to know her and spend time with her, while with Emilia he fell in love with her first and then he went on to learn more about her.

Yes his love for them is equal. For both of them he goes above and beyond to make sure they are safe and happy. It literally hurts Subaru's heart to see Rem not loving him like she did before the coma and you can see it throughout arc 7. When she rejected him and basically also her old self in Subaru, during the "you are not a hero" part, it absolutely destroyed him mentally. He wants to be her hero and he wants her to love him, cause he loves her too.

Isn't this a very obvious matter? It's possible to love two or more people romantically at the same time, even if it's not "in the same way". Romantic love, how it is experienced and expressed, varies from relationship to relationship. Subaru loving Emilia as his #1 girl doesn't prevent him from loving Rem romantically, albeit in a different, less intense way.

I guess the most basic answer as to how it's possible is "because that's how humans evolved". For most people, sexual attraction is a key component of romantic love. It's what distinguishes it from more platonic forms of affection; whether you would sleep with them or not. There ARE people for whom sexual attraction is not factor in picking a partner, but they're the exception to the rule.
Sexual attraction itself emerged in humans through natural selection. In order to pass down our genes, we're encouraged by our instincts to find a partner and reproduce. And because of natural selection, we're primed to think of traits advantageous to evolution as "attractive". Initially this was more along the lines of physical traits, the easiest example being wide hips in women. Men evolved to find them attractive because they make birthing children easier; a safer option to pass down one's genes.
As humans continued to evolve, we began to develop complex social structures to help us survive, in line with our developing minds. With the modern man, we often find personality and intelect to be as or more important than physical traits when it comes to picking a partner. We tend to find cleverness appealing, and we generally like people whose personality makes it easier to get along and cooperate with.
With all of this in mind, the answer to your question becomes clear. Just like with the traits we typically find attractive, we also evolved to regard most members of the opposite sex as potential partners. When we're young we tend to focus on familial bonds (and friendships to a lesser extent), but once puberty works its magic, most strangers (of a certain age range) becomes options of a partner.
People looking for a partner generally consider multiple options at the same time, as evolutionarily speaking it's more advantageous than going one by one. This also tends to start off as superficial attraction, but through interaction deepens into genuine love.
And so, while certianly not everyone's experience, it's possible for someone looking for a partner to come across multiple "appealing" options at around the same time, and develop romantic feelings for more than one of them. Often, because each "candidate" offers a different trait that the person seeking a partner finds as attractive or desirable.
Now, as for how this applies to Subaru. Breaking down his relationships with Emilia and Rem would take WAY too long, so in short: Emilia is the goal he works towards, while Rem is the one to pick him up when he breaks down. At several points in the story he's needed one or the other to keep on going. It's why in Arc 3 he chooses to fight Petelgeuse instead of running away, or why in Arc 4 Carmilla takes on Rem's appearance. Each girl provides Subaru with something different he appreciates, which is why he loves both, but not in the same way (albeit both can certainly be called romantic).
@ANW As I commented above, people are more than capable of loving two or more people at the same time. So Subaru loving Rem doesn't mean he would stop loving or pursuing Emilia. She's the girl he met first and the one he loves most; his #1. Just because he found someone else he also came to love does not mean he would just settle for Rem.
Secondly, if you want to argue that him "using" Rem means he doesn't love her, the same can be said about Emilia. For 3 whole arcs he used her as a way to feel like a hero. Obviously, Subaru does love Emilia, so this argument doesn't work. Love can be expressed in unhealthy ways, and Subaru certainly did so before his development. Nonetheless, he still loves Emilia and Rem.

Regarding the Carmilla bit, Subaru seeing Rem as a way to be punished and Subaru loving Rem aren't mutually exclusive. People love others often because what they offer in a relationship is something the person otherwise wouldn't have. Subaru loves how Rem is strict with him instead of enabling his bad habits and urges, and how she does it in a way that lets him pick himself up and go on despite the hardships.
While you phrased it in a harsh way, it's all about how love is expressed. You called it "punishment", but it's not like Rem is whipping him or anything like that.
Also, as a side note, I don't know if you intended it that way, but your comments seem to be written in an overly hostile way. And like, there's no need for that? We can discuss this matter without getting aggressive.

Does Subaru love Rem in a general sense? Yes, absolutely. As much as he loves Emilia? Yes. He tells Emilia that flat-out in the beginning of arc 4.
Does he love Rem romantically? I think yes, at least to some degree. I don’t think it would be fair to say he doesn’t have any romantic feelings for her, especially when he was very clearly about to kiss her after the whale hunt (thanks Ferris, jeez 😂).
I’m a big fan of Rem because I see a lot of myself in her, but I honestly hope that in the end she finds someone to love that isn’t Subaru. As a character she deserves someone who will love her without any conflicting feelings or reservations. She should keep being one of Subaru’s closest friends and companions, but I hope she finds someone else to settle down with.

I still think it's a romantic love for Rem, or even similar to the infatuation like she originally had for Subaru but of a much lesser degree.
One of the main reasons I think so is because one thing that would be kinda important it the whole scheme of Emilia=Satella, is Emilia is not jealous (envious) of Subaru. If Rem is kept as a romantic interest, rivalling Emilia, that might cause her to develop some jealously.
Of course, thats if Emilia actually becomes satella not the other way around. For all we know Envy was sealed, and then Satella was shinobied back to becoming a child and given to the elves.
