  • In this video, we share the most important RV tip we've ever shared with you: get your RV weighed! Whether you have a travel trailer, truck camper, fifth-wheel or motorhome, knowing the weight of your RV makes you safer on the road and gives you peace of mind. When you know your actual weight, fully loaded as you normally travel, you can adjust the air pressure in your tires to the manufacturer's specifications to lessen your chance of a blowout or other tire issues. If you find out you are overweight for your tires or chassis recommendations, you can downsize what you carry to make your RV safer. Or if you find you are okay with weight, but off balance (too heavy on one side for example), you can move things around.
    We take you along as we get our RV and Jeep weighed using two different methods: the SmartWeigh system at Escapees and a truck stop CAT scale. We'll show you how each weighing method works and the pros and cons of each. However you choose to do it, please get your RV weighed!
    Mentioned in this video:
    SmartWeigh by Escapees: www.escapees.c...
    CAT Scale Network: catscale.com/
    Tire Load and Inflation Charts and More Tire Info from Escapees: www.escapees.c...
    TireMinder A1A Tire Pressure Monitoring System: amzn.to/2GzZ4yU
    We bought our TireMinder TPMS several years ago. We have sensors installed on all 6 of our motorhome tires and all of our Jeep tires. While it does give us false signals every now and then (particularly when a sensor battery needs to be replaced), overall it has worked very well over the years we have owned it. It monitors both the air pressure and temperature of each tire at all times and alerts us to anything out of normal range so we can pull over and check it out. We highly recommend getting a tire pressure monitoring system. We feel a lot safer on the road since we installed ours.

    Hey y'all! We've been wanting to do this video for a very long time. We believe that knowing the accurate weight of your RV is super important to staying safe on the road. We've weighed each of our RVs shortly after we bought them and every time we make major changes to the amount of stuff we carry. Thanks for coming along with us. We'd love to hear your experiences and tips for RV weighing. Stay safe out there y'all!

    Long long ago in the 80's, I was a truck driver. Many times before I would go into the states weigh station, I would get on the CB and state to anyone on the channel that I was heavily over loaded in sail boat fuel, realizing that the station monitored channel 19 on the CB. I would always get signaled to go to the inspection area. Well, sail boat fuel is obviously air. So I would be empty with nothing in the trailer but air. Many fond memories of opening my truck trailer to nothing in it and the inspectors being dumbfounded!

    I agree that proper tire preshure is absolutely important. One thing I might have missed you talking about. When you get individual corner weights, you use the heaviest weight on that axel to set tire preshure for that axel. Good job geting the information out.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  Před 5 lety

      Hi James. The weights were very close. The SmartWeigh is reported in increments of 50 pounds. The CAT scale reports in increments of 10 pounds. The difference in reports was just over 200 pounds total and we had driven for a while between the two and burned off fuel. We were under our required weight overall and on every axle in both weighs.

    NIRVC offer a free "4-Corner" weighing at any of their dealerships. The individual wheel weight is important to know. I know of people who discovered their tag axle was overloaded. A Cat Scale does not caught that. I don't rely on the Tire Pressure monitoring system. I bought a good truck tire gauge to check tires manually.

    Good topic for a video! Only weighed my rig once and was well within the acceptable range. I'll look weighing like the first one you showed to look at the balance on my rig. More recently I've been focused on shedding unnecessary weight. Have you seen any data on increased MPG correlated with weight offloaded? Would make an interesting video. Did a quick search and didn't find anything with clear testing results for an RV. For instance, if one has an 80-gallon freshwater tank but only carries 40 gallons, the load would be reduced by 333 pounds. Most of the time, this would work for me so I'm left wondering how much this single action might improve my fuel efficiency.

    • @rvamericayall

      Thanks! We've owned a 23' travel trailer, a 28' Class A Gas motorhome, a 35' Class A Diesel motorhome, and now our 31.6' Class A Diesel motorhome. We prefer diesel because the engine is in the rear so all of the heat and noise associated with the engine is not up right in front with us. We also like the air suspension in the diesel motorhomes, gives a smoother ride and adjusts itself on turns.

    Were you under the GAWR for each coach axle? With the Jeep attached were you under the GCWR of the coach? How much more weight could you add? What tire pressures for the coach did you end up with after the weigh?

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  Před 5 lety

      Yes, we were under the suggested weights for every axle and overall. We could add 1,000 pounds to the motorhome and still be under the suggested weight. The Jeep came in at 600 pounds under our suggested tow weight. Tire pressures are specific for weight, but also for individual tire brand and model so you can’t go by what our pressures are. There is a link in the description of the video where you can find information on several of the major tire manufacturers.
