    He changed the face of piping forever. His compositions are already standard tunes in any session. I was devastated when he tragically took his own life. An inspiration and by all accounts just a really nice guy.

    It's sad that his genius isn't recognised outside of the world of piping. He was the Paganini of the bagpipes.

    Not just an amazing performer but a amazing composer, too! He placed the bar very high but great to see that many pipers are following his footsteps and innovating in the spirit of our time!

    Why the dislikes? You don't click on a piping video if you don't like the 'pipes... and what can someone find to fault with Gordon "The Master of Piping" Duncan???

    I was lucky enough to meet Gordan when he played with the "Thistle & Shamrock" concert series back in the early '90's. He visited the bookstore I worked at, I got an autograph from him. He was so very shy, didn't seem to realize just how great people thought he was.

    Played with Boghall when we were in a pub in Blairgowrie with Vale of Atholl many years ago. The pipes were being passed around for solos from players of both bands. The pipes went back in their box after Gordon played. You can’t follow perfection!

    @Rugby1989Scot Very serious i think! nowadays theres nothing to dislike, but back when Gordon first started making his mark, his tunes were way out there to say the least. Theres a famous story that after Seamus heard Gordon playing he stood up and said something like "If this is the face of Bagpipe music nowadays... then im taking up the fiddle!"

    I've got the music to Dolina MacKay in front of me and he's using grips/tarlouah's in the fourth part that aren't in the sheet music I have (The first three parts appear to be accurate). Plus, he repeats each part, which again isn't how it's written on what I have. Maybe he rearranged it?

    • @davidmaitlandgardner8109
      @davidmaitlandgardner8109 Před 5 lety +3

      kemckay part of what makes Gordon’s recitals interesting is that he rarely plays any tune, including repeats of parts, exactly the same twice. Even his music books, I believe, are more of a guideline to his music rather than exact transcriptions of his performances

      Hey there, hopefully you've sorted this, but look up any pipe band near you. Many offer instruction, often for free. You'll have a much easier go at it, rather than trying to learn on one's own.

      No, it was serious. Seamus disapproved of his style of playing and his innovative approach to piping. IMHO history has decided who had the rights of it.

    Gordon würde heute auch keinen Blumentopf mehr gewinnen, da gibt es mittlerweile bessere Spieler. Aber er ist mit Schuld dass es diesen Qualitätssprung gegeben hat. Ich denke dass seine Arbeit als Komponist wichtiger ist, als sein Dasein als Spieler. Heute spielt jede Dorf Pipeband seine Lieder mit den schmutzigen C und B Noten die er salonfähig gemacht hat. Schade dass ihn Alkohol und Depressionen zum Suizid getrieben haben. Wer weiß, was er uns noch alles gebracht hätte.

    His 4th part is good.. he adds in maybe one birl, and plays birls on beat 7. He is not playing any grips or taorluaths... I think he puts in a dre on the E...
    The music is there though, and the embellishments, well...I guess that is more bang for your buck as only Gordon could deliver ;-)

      Gordon died because he chose to end his life. He didn't die because he OD'd or because of alcohol poisoning (if that is what your incoherent sentence is attempting to allude to) he made the decision himself, and no matter what anyone's opinion on that may be, it was Gordon's decision, and Gordon's alone, and we must respect him for that. It's not for us to question his reasons, none of us lived in his shoes. so out of respect for the man and his music, preach somewhere else
