I’ve been thru Thyroid Cancer and 2 rounds of RAI treatments. I only had to isolate from people & pets for 2-3 weeks. Still awfully lonely and heartbreaking but not months! Thyroid cancer is the only cancer with a treatment that rips you away from a support system and it’s awful! 😢

The reaction of the dad saying the baby needs her mom, (which is true) is a bit selfish i think. The mom didn't need to hear "how's that gonna work?" She needed to hear "i got this, honey, while you get treatment."

I was thinking the same thing because he’s also a parent so it’s already looking like if she was healthy it would’ve been 80:20 I don’t wanna assume anything, but I feel like that is kind of selfish because you wouldn’t be able to take care of your child for five months while your wife gets treatment so you would rather your wife suffer, potentially die because you can’t take care of your child by yourself for a couple months while your wife is getting better and then will later join you into raising your child

that was a very weird way of showing breastfeeding. it would have made more sense to bring the baby into the room with a lactation consultant, have the LC get her situated, and just show her holding the baby while she nurses. not sure what the point was of wheeling them down the hallway together, waiting for the baby to start rooting around, and having the husband paw her dressing gown open.

    • @southernlady5085
      @southernlady5085 Před 6 měsíci

I don’t understand why they didn’t do a thyroidectomy! I had just been diagnosed with Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism), when it was found that I had I had a number of suspicious nodules on the thyroid. Also, to top things off, I had developed a goiter. So the dr took my thyroid out. (Since I had Graves, I did have to take meds for a month prior to surgery to “slow” thyroid production of thyroxine; however, this was all done at home.)
The procedure itself was a breeze. Overnight in hospital and back home the next day. On R & R for about a ten days afterwards. I’ve never felt better. I’m now on a precise dose of replacement hormones; and for that, I simply take two pills every day. Levels are checked every six months as a precautionary measure, but the hormone replacement has been the same for well over a decade.
My thyroid had caused me misery for years. In addition to the typical symptoms, I used to walk around in 20 degree winter weather without a coat because I had no feeling of cold. Another strange symptom were horrendous panic attacks and the feeling my heart was beating out of my chest. These things alone made me suspect something was going on, so it was an huge relief to have my thyroid out.
So, I’m wondering why the script writers would only present the one, most dramatic, and highly difficult option of five to six months of TOTAL isolation in hospital? Treatment that chemically stops thyroid production by using radioactive iodine, seems archaic and highly stressful to both patient and families. Surgery does basically the same thing without the prolonged isolation, and it’s intense, emotional pressure of TOTAL isolation. Nowadays, surgery is mostly done endoscopically, thus reducing recovery time even more. Recovery is now less than a week after hospital discharge. And I should note: Although I was presented the option of isolation and chemically destroying the thyroid as a viable option, the dr was less than keen on it. It is simply an outdated mode of treatment.
I can’t think but this choice was a case of lazy writing in which a scenario was introduced to enhance the drama of it all. It’s truly bad form when med programs make the treatment worse than it should be for dramatic effect. What happens is that the viewer ends up w/misinformation in regards to the treatment of certain medical conditions. And as a result, people don’t seek treatment for symptoms that can reduce a patient’s quality of life and/or prolong it. ( While this isn’t the best way to learn about medical conditions, people do turn to medical shows for info)
I know this may be akin to “spitting into the wind,” but wouldn’t it be great if writers actually paid attention to the facts, the truth, and were honest in its delivery? Why aren’t we demanding something better than the force-fed agendas of certain shows? Or the substandard writing ? Like it or not, these shows impact the ways in which we think and behave. They inform our consciences, affecting us in ways beyond our perceptions, blurring the boundaries of right and wrong. We are ceasing to be critical of the groupthink these shows push and the distorted perceptions they provide us of the world. This is just a fictional medical show, yes, but it is also symbolic of so much more, the increasing absence of truth, goodness, honesty, thoughtfulness, beauty, deep love, commitment, joy, peace, freedom… from the public square. For too long we’ve immersed ourselves in entertainment as an escape because life is hard. You don’t have to think or feel as you scroll endlessly through TikToks.
It’s time to begin once more.
It’s time to change for the better.
Maybe we can start with just one cable show?

      they truly are-
at the ripe age of 16 i was diagnosed with graves’ disease (initially was suspected cancer but cleared) i had to go through radioactive procedures and was taken out of school for a two month. my thyroid was the last issue they discovered. anemia, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, depression, and extreme weightloss were all because my thyroid levels were out of whack.
i’m now 23 and will always have to take a pill considering my thyroid is just now a shriveled little bean in my neck. i graduated 4th in the class in high school and just graduated with a honors bachelor’s degree. Unfortunately i might be infertile due to my lack of thyroid

Man, this show was so unrealistic. There’s no way a hospital would ever let a mother give birth, squatting like that. (Even though that’s how women have given birth for centuries, and it has been proven to be easier for the woman to give birth that way, then laying down. And the only reason women give birth laying down now is because of a fetish an English king had.) in fact, when women try to give birth, standing up, or squatting hospitals, staff harass, and bully the woman, and tell her they’re not going to help her at all with the birth if she doesn’t lay down because it’s easier for the doctor that way. You can look it up there literally stories of women who gave birth alone in a hospital room, because the staff refused to help her because she wanted to stand instead of laying down

I don't know what part of what country you're talking about, but I assure you that is not at all a universal experience. When I had my second baby 17 years ago, the medical staff actually encouraged me to stand or squat, even though I was super tired and just wanted to lie down!

Correct me if I’m wrong bc I’ve only watched half ish of season 1, but isn’t the point of New Amsterdam that the guy is trying to make massive changes to the way they treat patients bc he wants to put welfare above profit and “traditional methods”? In that case it would make sense that she’s giving birth in a way that you may find “rare”?

"this show was so unrealistic." Yes, it's a hospital drama, not a documentary. Some situations will be exaggerated and nearly unbelievable. But art imitates life, rare and unlikely don't mean impossible. But to your argument as to what lead you to this conclusion, as some people have pointed out, there are some doctors, nurses, and midwifes who encourage giving birth in positions other than flat on the back. Squatting and standing are preferred as gravity helps. Being on all fours is another popular position as the pelvis is more open when the knees are closer together than when they are spread apart.
