INFO: In this video i take a look at some of the top-rated stoner rock albums according to RYM in order to find out what makes them special and what makes the stoner rock guitar sound unique. I'll talk a little bit about each album, artist and give you a taste of what to expect.
The channel has now gone stoner rock! What stoner/desert rock band should i talk about next?
Can you please do a video essay on KoRn!?? Or atleast Jonathan Davis, he has a very interesting background and a prolific music career besides Korn...
@@maximumgainpodcast4835 korn would be cool
The Melvins
Lochness
Fu Manchu!
*Guitarist's guide to stoner rock*
Step 1: buy a bass
Step 2: buy the first 4 Black Sabbath albums on vinyl
Respect
You forget Step 3 : smoke alot of pot
@@TheMisterFox5559 you aren't wrong lol
@@TheMisterFox5559 so high that he forgot he smoked it? the pLot smoke thickens....
Step 5: ..... wait what about 4?
Short version: stoner rock is like Sabbath, except more Sabbath-y.
"more Sabbath than Sabbath. I like it" - Rob Zombie
Haha. Add more fuzz and just play 2 songs for 45 mins
*does NOT like to be labelled "stoner rock"*
*is called dopesmoker*
Nathan Worobey Lol, well they're obviously one of the exceptions 😂

@@clitcrusader4897 beat me to it lol
Pisses me off quite a bit TBH. Musicians are such hipsters, all that "we hate being labelled" sort of shit. Yeah, people make up words to describe your music, not to segregate you... And the coolest sub-genres all do it, Shoegaze ( so many effect pedals they stare at their shoes all gig) , Grunge , Stoner Rock are all very catchy cool words to describe a sound but musicians are so pretentious they can't accept it. So irratating. I'd love to one watch a band accept the word invented to desribe their genre.
I think Sleep is cool with the label
Stoner rock/metal has been by far the most fun sub-genre to jump into. Such an array of sounds across all albums and artists. Weedeater and acid bath are always my go to recommendations to set someone on the path
And then some Dopelord and Spelljammer on top, to make you reevaluate riffs, chords and what makes a melody, i.e. borrowed chords.
Step one : smoke a ounce of weed
Step three : slave ten amps together half them dirty half them clean.
Step ten: eat a jalapeño.
Thanks to Alice in Chains, they introduced me to SOOO many other artists, and then to Kyuss, which lead to desert rock (or 'stoner' rock) is now one of my favorite types of music!
Dopethrone. That’s it.
Good ass shit, one of my favorites out of the genre
@Meme Man the album or the Band by the same name?
MrFox album
@Meme Man I knew,i was joking but apparently the Band Dopethrone is a reference to the Norwegian Black Metal Darkthrone.
Either way : both are awesome.
Dopesmoker. That is all.
All them witches
Nice. I've heard of them, but never listened so far.
@@SuperBostonCeltics9 Watch both of their performances on KEXP. I'd watch the older video first, the one where they still have a keyboardist.
Thomas Phillipe Marriage of Coyote Woman’s my favorite song by them
@@runeraid1561 For me it's the death of coyote woman
I was never given a name I’d start with dying surfer meets his maker
I highly recomend King Gizzard and the lizard wizard
I've listened to them a fair bit actually. But i'm having a hard time liking their music for some reason. I don't find it that addictive.
Have you listened to Stonefield? If you haven't: it's a stonerrock band from the same label as King Gizz
@@LieLikesMusiclisten to sleep drifter by them!!
@@LieLikesMusic which albums have you tried btw. I would have thought you would be really into them considering the types of music you discuss on YT
They're watered down psych rock
Dopethrone by Electric Wizard is my favourite stoner album. Love the vocals and the drum lines, especially on funeralopolis!
Listen to king weed from France.... They are so great.
I love that the channel has started leaning towards guitar lately. I'd like to take you up on your offer if you'd like to chat, platform is your choice.
Cool, yes just click the link in my description here. I'm most active on Instagram and Patreon.
No Electric Wizard?
@@Butch_Deezlsteak No, but they're one of the bigger ones.
Josh credits his "Kyuss" sound from 2 things"A Bass cabinet with two 15' woofers & no other speaker cabinet",And secondly he cites his guitar"A late 70's early 80's Neck-Through body Solid body Ovation Electric guitar"(used on all the recordings for Kyuss, can also be seen in any home video taken from this era).
That sound he got on blues for The red sun, welcome to sky valley, and the circus leaves town,Queens of the Stone age Kyuss split EP(where they cover "Black Sabbath-Into the Void"). Is probably my most favorite guitar sound ever. Once I learned how to recreate that sound?.... When I play metal that's the only sound I use(to this day).
What cabs/speakers did you wind up getting ?
I highly recommend Electric Wizard. That’s the real heavy stoner doom
I've been playing like this for decades and never knew it had a name. Thanks!
Boris is a gem of a band. Listen to their whole catalogue if you can. Absolutely mesmerizing.
The only Boris album I got into is "New Album" which is so far removed from this genre lol. Way more dream pop/shoegaze inspired. I respect them for being diverse though
@@aspaceproductions Great album. I'm more of a Flood guy.
I really dig how you're bringing more of your personality to the channel. Makes the videos more engaging (they totally were before, but this is just a real nice addition)
Thanks for supporting the change of format Seth. Yes it's definitely going to be more personal this time around and more guitar focused too.
Thank you young gentleman for shedding some light. Bless!
Everybody who was worried they had a dead pixel on their screen.
Great video again. Really like this new format with you talking to the camera.
That was an amazing, slick and informative production.
Thanks. WHat in particular did you find to be slick?
Stoner Rock's my favorite genre!!
Mine too. Although i do like a LOT of genres.
One of my favorites in this genre is a band called Monkey3 with noteworthy songs like ‘through the desert’ and ‘Icarus’. They are largely instrumental and have many songs that are fairly lengthy, but really take u on a journey.
Kewl! Thanks for suggesting these.
Monkey3 is awesome! I never heard of them until I saw them live when I saw Colour Haze in Germany. So stoked to see them mentioned here!
There's a few tracks of King Gizzard's new album that are very stoner/doomy as well. Check it out if you're into Sleep, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, etc
Dusta Rhymes SOOOOOPAAAHH BUUUUUUUGG
Yeah i've listened to some of their stoner/doom stuff. Those guys can jump into any genre on a wim it seems.
There new album is super stoner rock based, Gila monster is straight up sabbath worship lol.
Pretty cool you checked out Clutch, especially Blast Tyrant. While BT is my fav Clutch album, and kind of changed my life as a teenager, I feel like their self titled is the most stoner album they did (many people tend to lump that abum in with other 90s stoner stuff)
You honestly have such elite music taste 👌🏾
Thanks dude. Cheers from Norway
SUNN O))) is pronounced Sun
No it’s pronounced “sun oh” and then you make a little curved parenthesis shape with your left hand and tap it on the left side of your mouth 3 times.
Actually it’s pronounced ohhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm with the m repeating for 64 bars.
kenneth bartholow ok kid, if you say so
I think its prounced sonuuuuuuu
It's pronounced, Sun Full moon crescent moon crescent moon crescent moon
You HAVE to check out Mars Red Sky. One of the best modern stoner bands I've listened to.
And also king buffalo
Do one of these for psychedelic rock!
Great analysis btw!
Songs for the deaf is one of my favorite albums. I've only recently got into Boris thanks to Jason from Fuzzlord effects
The Obsessed is the 80’s Stoner Steppingstone from Sabbath to Sleep
You need to listen to Melvins ASAP. Check out Lysol it’ll fit right in with the some of these albums.
Pizzzzzzzzaul
The Joe Preston album from the Melvins KISS solo album cover tribute series thing has a great stoner rock song: Hands First Flower.
This man here knows the deal.
I wish you would've talked about "Dead Roots Stirring" by Elder. Maybe one of the musically most impressive records in this Top 10 you used for this video. Long really great layered songs with a lot of variations of riffs and sounds. Most bands in this genre stick to 1-3 riffs and the usual song structures in almost every song while these guys have like 5-10 riffs in one song and no typical song structures. Which results in many surprising and great shifts and changes within the songs. Every song tells an epic story. They further explored this on the next record "Lore". This band overall makes epic sounding records. They are something special. When you really get into them you know what I mean. Every record from them sounds different and got it's own magic. Over the years they got the label "Progressive Stoner Metal" because of more and more Prog elements. My favorite record by them is "Reflections Of A Floating World" from 2017. This band inspired a new wave of Stoner bands who are creating more varied sounds than the typical Stoner formula.
Yes, I agree, Elder should get more attention than most the generic tone stoner bands. They have a special magic in their structure and can really inspire you if you play guitar or bass for example just because they break the most used stoner rock structures. I put Elder in the same place like Kyuss who got me into stoner rock and man..those guys were from another planet as Sleep with their generic riffing but a massive tone that destroys the mainstream doom, Colour Haze and Satorinaut who breaked the psychedelic patterns of reality and every Josh Homme and John Garcia procjects. And many more but we don't have enough space here to talk about stoner/doom/psych groove etc. It's a complex genre that destroys every mainstream rock/metal sound and songwriting.
Man, robot hive Exodus, and from Beale street to Oblivion are great. Also Jam room is super funky and weird. Definitely check those ones out Lie!!
Mercury was a first Clutch song I listened to. I found it in one stoner playlist among Kyuss, Acid King, Peeping Tom, Monkey3, Mighty Nimbus, Kamchatka and many others. Now I'm trying to find that playlist, it was something magic, something totally new for me.
Earth’s “Pentastar” would slide in nicely here.
This is an excellent presentation! Still watching as I comment. The Sword is my favorite in this genre. Hope they get a prop here.
If you're interested in Clutch's progressive side, I urge you to check out Elephant Riders and Robot Hive Exodus. Lots of time signature silliness between those two albums.
Robot Hive/Exodus is Clutch’s finest record IMO. Many people overlook it.
Blast Tyrant - Clutch blows me away with how good it is. It was instant love when i discovered them.
Clutch sounding like Mastodon wasn't lost on Mastodon. Blood and Thunder features vocals from Neil Fallon of Clutch.
As for Melvins, I would highly recommend the Stoner Witch album. Some of their best work. Mastodon's also covered their song "The Bit" from their Stag album.
Check out King Gizzard, too, if you haven't. Great band from over here in Australia. Microtonal Flying Banana as well as Nonagon Infinity are great psychedelic/Stoner/punk/prog albums. They're pretty prolific and genre bending. They just released a stoner thrash album and a folky, bluesy, boogie based album in the one year haha.
Jesse Lapham
That whole Melvins cover album is pretty damn good: We Reach, which is a song from the Ozma album that should be notes as a top stoner rock album.
Awesome video! By the way, what do you think of Stoned Jesus? If you haven't heard them already I'd suggest "I'm the mountain", I find the build up in that song particularly amazing, hope you do too?
Man I don’t know how you just shrugged off clutch’s 2nd album, that album inspired me to pick up a guitar and is one of the best albums imo. You should give it another shot dude!
I agree!! I've been obsessed with that album since I've heard it. It took me forever to get into more of their discography because I felt like they couldn't have done better than the self titled.
Monster Magnet had the "School-Free Drug Zone" concert t-shirt on the Superjudge tour. Over the course of of several years, I saw them perform two amazing shows and one muddled, self-indulgent, trainwreck turd of a show on the Powertrip tour.. That was the last time I saw them. Dopes is a great album. I still break it out from time to time.
Hey Lie, I have some recommendations for bands that fall under the progressive stone category. I've spent alot of time looking for good "stoner rock" Check out these:
Mammoth Volume - Mammoth Volume
Truckfighters - V, and basically everything they do
Creature with the Atom Brain - The Birds Fly Low
Witchcraft - Legend
Reach out if you want more recommendations or want to talk about the genre.
Blues For The Red Sun was dope, but Welcome to Sky Valley will always be my favorite.
I’ve been jamming about TRIGUN’s ost lately, and it was Neat I love it when I found out this genre can also called Desert Rock it’s pretty cool af
The first two Blue Cheer albums , "Vincebus Eruptum" & "Outsideinside" are phenomenal. Leigh Stephens guitar playing alone was enough to hook me in ✌️
I saw Sleep live a few years back it was so freaking loud. I don't like the label Stoner Rock either, since I love it and don't smoke.
That's great. Apparently they played here in Oslo just some days ago. Couldn't afford seeing them tho eheh.
The label, I think, is important because some of the band sound like weed feels, perfectly. Sleep, especially their 1st album, sound exactly like weed
Monster Magnet is awesome! Their 9th album „Last Patrol“ is one of my faves from the last decade! Check out the deluxe edition, very cool stuff!
Just listened to Clutch mercury. Damn very groovy! Love it!
Oh yeah! Such a cool video and so great to see you mention Dopes to Infinity! I love that album, but Monster Magnet doesn't get enough attention.
Well maybe a few more people check them out now that i mentioned them. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Fuzzin' right! I love stoner rock!
Watch the documentary ‘such hawks such hounds’ for a full trip into the depths of this genre.
Gracias por el dato!
Good pickups, fuzz, bass and overdrive. I recommend wo fat, red desert, 1000mods, planet of zeus.
Monster Magnet actually formed in 1989, not 1998. They were already a national act in the early 90s. (I'm old).
Please give Mars Red Sky, Holy Serpent, Dozer and Ruff Majik (they’re from South Africa) a try 🤘🏽
Really loving Black Rainbows and Truckfighters right now
Clutch - Elephant Riders. Great summer time album
The guitarists of clutch used to be a friend of my parents and I ended up playing with his son as a kid..
You should do a video on the European stoner rock scenes. Seems like a lot of good bands come out of Sweden, like Truckfighters and Asteroid.
ELDER, Dead roots, Lore and Reflections are perfection
Hey, catch this:
Dopelord - Dead inside I&II
Dozer - Star by star
Truckfighters - Desrt Cruiser
Lowrider - Convo V
1000mods - Into the spell
True Widow - Four teeth
etc by vibe...
You are welcome.
Very cool video! Where would you draw the line to doom (metal)?
Tbh you could just get 'Blues for the Red Sun' and 'Welcome to Sky Valley' and call it a day lol. However I'd also throw in 'The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull' by Earth, and 'Delmar' by Los Natas, who are a lesser-known outfit from Argentina.
Or just raid Stoned Meadow of Doom's channel for albums!
I have a sincere problem with Kyuss' vocals. REALLY dislike his voice :s Allthough I quite enjoy the guitar parts, I seem to never get into them much because his vocals just throw me off. Much prefer Qotsa :p
The Black Angles - enough said. Saw Clutch a couple times back in the mid to late 90's - knowing nothing about them before hand - and they just ripped the place up. They were so devastating live man. Loud as hell and super tight. I never would have considered them stoner rock back then. I just called them super grooving hard core/punk. They were a blast to see in a small club.
There are several people here that mention this exact same thing. How they're such an amazing live-band.
Better get my ass to their gig sometime then.
Monster magnet was formed in 89, and their first official release its from 91. Dopes to infinity its from 95 and it was my first approach to this awesome band. Checkout the Wikipedia my young fella.
You should definitely listen to Boris' 2005 album "Pink". It's a really energetic and crazy record
I'll see what i can cram into my listening hours. It would definitely be interesting.
Here's some UK upcoming Stoner/Doom: doomedandstoned.bandcamp.com/track/into-the-vile
Give the entire compilation album a listen if you're interested in the booming UK scene.
I was just listening to Dopesmoker before this video was uploaded!
Cool. Good timing!
7:54 Monster Magnet was formed in 1989.
Your pronunciation of La Curandera was spot on btw 5:32
I was thinking I seen em in like 93, thanks for correction
Blues For The Red Sun is my acid album. I will for ever associate that album with all the times I had tripping on LSD with my high school buddies in my basement ripping bong. Good fucking times.
I know how to play Stoner Metal on bass. Dragonaut is easy for me just get an passive bass which I use an 1986 Ibanez Roadstar II RB650 bass which is a PJ bass a boss ds1 and boom ride the dragon into the crimson eye.
As a fellow Norwegian its your duty to check out "Honcho", "We", "El Caco" and "Thulsa Doom".
yeah that Matt Sweenester quote is hands down my favorite quote by ANYONE
?????????? How could you not talk about Sleep's Holy Mountain or Dopesmoker? Literally the definitive albums of stoner doom...
Did you even watch the video? His first example is dopesmoker...
And also i mentioned that i'd go over the top 10 rated stoner rock albums on RYM. Sleep is lower down on the list.
Yeah Sleep made the literal definition of Stoner Doom in the 90's.
Where'd you get that shirt!!!???
One of the first stoner rock albums I have ever discovered is Super Van Vacation by a greek band called 1000mods, it just clicked with me well enough to make me want to cruise through some desert wastelands while listening to it!
Lol yes i've heard of them too. They didn't really click with me though. But apparently stoner rock is a LOT more popular in greece than in other countries for some reason. I wish i knew why.
@@LieLikesMusic It's a marginal country in the EU with alot of economical issues and people tend to turn away from the mainstream contemporary western culture as a result, also Greece is a very inspirative land by nature that feels very much in tone with the psychedelic 'desert' vibes of Stoner Rock, it has the kind of beauty that fits this spirit. One can picture a movie set in Ancient Greece with Stoner Rock as a soundtrack. This is what I think is the reason.
Atomic Bitchwax and Danava are a couple bands you should give a listen to as well
lol there's a spec on your lens, i've been scratching my monitor for the 2mins only to realize its you not me!~
Great vid and great bands...but you said Magnet was formed in 98...truth is Dopes To Infinity came out before that (95 if I remember right)...they had a couple albums prior to that too I believe like Spine Of God...great video!!
Really? How could i've missed this. Maybe i meant to say 88. I'll have to check this. Cheers.
Sad that nobody mentioned King Buffalo. They’re GOAT
absolutely. song for the deaf is a kickass song and for me the best among them
It would be the "Dune" soundtrack
OK then What is Hawkwind? Yes its labelled space rock but its probably the missing link
Fu Manchu is pretty good. They throw in a bit of punk with the stoner sound.
And they go back to 85. They used to be in Thrasher magazine (a skater mag) amongst all of the punk bands. Just in mentions and small ads.
They sound lots like Blue Cheer imho!
Apart from Kyuss, King Buffalo , space slug and All them witches are a good starter point for fans and first timers.
Is this the same studio space as Living Room Gear Demos?
Yupp we rent the same studio. Good observation
Trip hazard - rat race is pretty cool, highly recommended it
Cool thanks for recommending and stopping by!
EyeHateGod, Red Fang, Music Hates You, Crowbar, Acid Bath, COC, Bongzilla.. Turn it up to 11 and enjoy!!!
Yes
When I saw the title first thing I was going to comment is "Anyone labeled as stoner rock rejects the label" but that's the first thing you covered XD
Yupp i'm familiar with the controversy and figured people would do exactly like you said. Good to get it out of the way.
Were you at the Sleep show in Oslo the other day too? It was pretty dope. Hehe.
No but i wish. I'm always having a hard time following concert dates.
@@LieLikesMusic I was really good! Wish they would have played at Rockefeller in stead of Vulkan, though. I think they could have easily sold out there too, and the sound would have been better. Gotta have a good PA for stoner bands :-)
if you like this genre you should give stoned jesus - i'm the mountain
Saw the live
Check out pure rock fury and elephant riders from clutch
Love everything by clutch, but my preference is their blues stuff.
@@bombercountyblues I disagree but respect your opinion, obviously clutch is always amazing but I prefer their earlier work
@@clitcrusader4897 cool...if I'm honest,, it's probably a symptom of age.
I have the exact same guitar
Ey cool! It's a great beginner guitar. I really like the feel of the neck.
monster magnet is more like from 89 than 98. i can not recommend their self titled ep enough. absolute stoner/noise rock masterpiece
Listen to Dead Roots Stirring by Elder. Seriously, that album is so cerebral and fantastical. Unlike the other stoner albums, its much less "disgusting" (disgusting in a good way), rather it is pretty while still having layers of fuzz. Its super groovy as well with some prog elements. Reflections of a Floating World, another one of their albums, is even better imo but the prog comes out more and a lot of hardcore stoner fans wouldnt like it as much.
