That Harp is NOT out of tune. Every harp is different, and the notes you are hearing is what Debussy puts in his music, she is playing in flat keys. When a pedal harp player makes a sharp or a flat, she is moving the string up or down with her feet with the pedals. Manually moving them. And this song has a lot of sharps and flats. So what you are hearing is the string being bended to reach that sharp or flat, very quickly, and then brought back to natural position. The harp is not out of tune. Perhaps Claire De Lune is not the best piece for an instrument like a harp, but the harp is not out of tune. ----experienced Orlando Salvi Harp Player for over 25 years
Are harps tuned in equal temperament? If they are tuned in equal temperament (like pianos and basically all other modern instruments are) then the piece being in "flat keys" would not sound any more out of tune than it being in C major. I could understand that harps are all different and so are tuned stlightly differently from one another to compensate (stretching), but this is too out of tune to be "not out of tune". Pianos are tuned according to the instrument too (stretching), but when properly tuned, none are as divergent from perfect temperament as this harp is.
Dean D I'm a harp player too. but isn't it strange that the same notes just an octave higher sound different? this harp definitely must be tuned oftener
Absolutely mesmerizing to watch and to hear.... ... Impossible to not relax, seeing the flow of hands on strings, the beautiful, ancient instrument, and the lovely young lady. She will touch everyone who sees this, and have great success. A stunning talent
lyndouninette it’s such a gentle and beautiful instrument, it’s so hard not to love anything played on it. Have you heard of a Koto? It’s similar to a harp but native to Japan, and it’s just as lovely as a harp. Any stringed instrument just makes me feel so warm when listening to it.
WOW! Brought tears to my eyes....as a trained classical pianist, I always heard this on piano, but the harp? BEAUTIFUL!!!!! You look like an angel playing this...thank you for posting this...this was just beautiful!!!!
Wonderful playing. The result of years of hard work, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. No 'gods', no 'angels', no 'heaven' or any other rubbish was responsible. A dedicated and determined musician is why we can appreciate and enjoy such music here.
Wow! What a beautiful performance, I love it 🥰God bless your hands and your talent. Listening to this song, played in an harp is very intense and emotional. Amazing! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Let me get this straight ... those that play harp don't think it's out-of-tune ... those that don't play harp think it's out of tune ... did anybody just listen to the performance and enjoy it? ---I did :)
... I need to get back in practice with my piano; this was the last song I learned, and it's just as beautiful now as it was when I listened to it back then. Kudos!
OMG.... I'm feeling sorry for myself because I'm having a hard time with this on the piano. I can't imagine what it took to master this on the harp. Beautifully done. I am inspired. This just got a little easier for me....
Hey mate, I know this comment is 3 years late but I think you can do it. I hope you have succeeded with Clair De Lune on the piano. I'm learning it on piano aswell so its gives me something to look forward to😊
Clair de Lune is an incredibly difficult piece, bro! I’ve been playing harp for 4 years, I’m at an intermediate level, and my teacher still says it’s way above my ability. If you’re learning it, that’s already a huge achievement! It seems like you’ve put in loads of time and effort on the piece and I’m sure you play beautifully. :)

Damien, you'd better price a concert harp before destroying your guitar and switching. You know, in case you don't have 30 grand in your wallet. Just sayin' :-)
i think its because, unlike the piano, the harp's sound does not resonate as much, leading to a faster tempo. though I do think the original tempo should still be kept
Geko2006 firstly, the fact that Debussy composed in an impressionistic style has no impact on the speed of his pieces. Debussy wrote a variety of pieces ranging from allegro to presto as well as writing slower pieces. secondly, remember that she is not performing on a piano, and that this is a transcription of the original, meaning whoever transcribed the piece could've edited the piece's performance directions. little history lesson: impressionism is a style of music, found in the modern period (also known as twentieth century). composers who composed in the style focussed on fluidity, dynamic range, and avoidance of harsh dissonance, unlike many other composers of the modern period (e.g. Schoenberg and Webern, who were expressionists, serialists, etc.) it has nothing to do with speed.
Magnificent. If we went back in time the people would think they glimpsed heaven and heard angels. But, it is you who developed a wonderful talent and grew such strong, graceful hands through years of dedicated practice. Thanks for all that. Most of all thanks for this.
gnstunali Can you play the harp? I can and I tell you, this is mostly as good as it gets. The instrument can never sound as "in tune" as a piano. Ever. It bothered me all the years I've been taking lessons.
why don't you go up there and play it yourself if you know how to play harp as well as this song and might as well tune it too 'cause I'm sure you know how do do that to 47 strings
Scott InPhilly it's not my fault people don't understand how hard it is to play an instrument Including harp, they think it's out of tune because it's a different intrument instead of a piano, harps are not pianos, therefore they will not sound exactly the same, I'm just confronting them about that, but maybe you play harp and you know how much the struggle is to tune a number of strings, it's not easy, the fact that people are complaining about that and calling it a "god awful harp" is just plain stupid.
Nice performance that would have been better on a properly tuned instrument. Some of its strings are flat and the dis-harmonicity is somewhat unpleasant to listen to.
So I am a harpist myself and harps do NOT sound the same on a recording as they do in person. I would imagine that her harp was not flat or out of tune in person but was simply thrown off due to the recording. Also some older harps can give a much flatter tone.
Corban Scott I respectfully disagree with you. The instrument *is* out of tune to the point of being detrimental to the otherwise good performance. Digital recordings do not lie about the instrument's tune. Just listen! Surely you can hear what I'm talking about...
marc49lewis Harps are very similar to square pianos - they are very susceptible to becoming out of tune quickly because of the low tension on the strings against a wooden soundboard. Damn, the harp looks so difficult to play even with colorcoded strings... i can barely keep track of 6 strings on a guitar 😂
this is the way to hear this tune! bravo. tears are falling.
Thank you for enriching my life with this video.
It's amazing
Just watched this, and am convinced that Debussy must have composed this for harp, whether he knew it or not...

Slow down. The slow pace of the notes and allowing them to ring properly is crucial.
it’s difficult on harp because it doesn’t have a sustain pedal.......
todas y cada una de las notas llevan el alma de Debussy, gracias!
All and every note take the soul of Debussy, thanks very much!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful interpretation of Clair de Lune and bringing some light to my life.
Why didnt she stick to the original tempo?
i think its because, unlike the piano, the harp's sound does not resonate as much, leading to a faster tempo. though I do think the original tempo should still be kept
A harp is just a naked piano Change my mind
lmao
I usually think of it as a vertical piano. But you have changed my.mind.

Good Technique but to fast.. Impressionism.. just let it be.
Geko2006 you need a hearing test dood like shit it sounds hella good
and you need art history lessons.
Geko2006 frickin history lessons? How dumb u are lol, this song isnt history, its a piano piece, theres no need for history lessons.
Learn something. Debussy is the Impressionism artistic movement on piano. No need? Are you sure? Are you a musician? No, you don't.

good rendition... but aren't some harp strings a tad out of tune?
moving pedals with feet to reach sharps and flats, hard to do on a piece containing LOTS of them
