    Ground rules for my channel: On my CZcams channel, I have zero tolerance for disrespect. The book community is one of the nicest, kindest, most open communities possible. Personally, I really enjoy finding people who read the same book that I read and feel the complete opposite of how I feel (maybe I missed something, maybe the other side has a valid point, maybe I can learn something). However, I am respectful. I still like people's videos that I disagree with. But anyone who is personally attacking another person, I'm out. I ban those folks from my channel. Hate has no home on my channel. (Examples of personal attacks: You are an inattentive reader, you have no imagination, you don't know how to think. This list is not all inclusive.)

    I just signed up to NetGalley, after watching your videos. I've just downloaded two "read now" books, to see how it works and to get my percentage up before making requests. Thanks for the info :)

      Hope you enjoy it! NetGalley has saved me so much money (at least $200/month). Plus, my house was starting to fill up with books. It was the push I needed to give eBooks a chance. Enjoy your week of reading!

      @@LisaOfTroy I enjoyed the first book (the Watcher Girl) and I've just stated the second "In Dark Water". I reviewed the first on Goodreads and my blog and posted a link to twitter, you have some useful tips. I've been on Goodreads a long time but haven't actively socialised. I need to do more of that.

    Thanks a lot for the insight into how NetGalley works. =) I always wondered why I get approved for some books and don't even have a chance to get others. Great video!

    Great video. I haven't used Libby before so it's good to know about that. I agree with you that the most important thing is to make the account and give it a try; I was surprised that with a brand new account on there, I was getting approved for things from major publishers. There are also a bunch of titles that don't require approval, so another tip would be to read those and leave reviews to increase your chances of getting approved for the ones that do require approval.

      I'm going the route of picking titles that don't need approval "the read now" category to get my percentage up...on my second read now.

    I’ve been on netgalley as a blogger since 2017 and love it. I try to keep my percentage up. Auto approved on quite a few so my problem is self control ☹️😂🤨

    Lisa, this was so worthwhile. Thank you so much. One of the things I never thought to do was friend people in the NetGalley group. 😳
    I keep applying for Katee Roberts books and getting rejected. 🤣😂🤣 I'll be ordering the next one anyways. Although I got rejected for Psyche and Eros and I am an expert on the Cupid and Psyche mythos and read every single book I can get my hands on about it.

      Even with nearly 8,000 followers on GoodReads and being the #3 US best book reviewer and #10 in the world, I only have about a 50% acceptance rate. I will still request books though because you won't get any books at all if you don't ask. The other path you might want to try is looking up the publisher and sending them a direct email. Give a little pitch about why they should give the book to you such as, "I'm the author's #1 fan. I'm so passionate about this book. I have 5,000 subscribers, and I will promote it on GoodReads, my blog, Amazon, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Here is my address." Again, they might never respond, but this does work from time to time. Don't feel discouraged!

    I just joined. I really screwed up. I assumed I wasn't going to get approved by many and I end up getting approved for 32. 🤦🏻‍♀️ ME= slapping myself for not watching this before I request books.

    Great video! If I really like a series I make sure I keep requesting the next book. Publishers who often turn me down regularly, will approve me for series books I have given a great review.

      That is a great idea! Personally, I would give almost anything to get my hands on Philip Pullman's Volume 3 of The Book of Dust. But the last I heard he was still writing it. Doesn't stop me from looking at NetGalley for it. Enjoy your week of reading! Thank you so much for your kind words- they mean the world!

    Hey, great tips. I wanted to know if I dnf some books and don't give feedback on netgalley for those books, will it affect on my approval of getting more books? Please let me know. I'm new at this whole arc thing.

    • @LisaOfTroy
      @LisaOfTroy  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question! NetGalley recommends that you maintain a feedback ratio of 80% which means that you should be writing reviews for at least 80% of the books that you have ever been approved for. That being said, I have been approved for books when I had a feedback ratio of 40% and been denied books while having an 88% feedback ratio while still being the #5 US book reviewer and #9 in the world. To summarize: You can DNF books that you have been approved for; however, that might impact your ability to be approved for books going forward (especially if you are below the 80% threshold).

    • @stargater2892
      @stargater2892 Před 2 lety +1

      I don't get popular books because I don't have a channel. But I do get approved for a lot. I have read around 150 and DNF 2 or 3. I explained why. They do want you to be honest.

  • @LarryHasOpinions
    @LarryHasOpinions Před 3 lety +2

    only requested a book once and got declined, hopefully it'll get easier if i get more subs in future

    • @LisaOfTroy
      @LisaOfTroy  Před 3 lety +2

      Sometimes you can be declined because they will only give X number of copies out of a book, if you are X+1 you can be denied even if you have a very large following. Just keep requesting books and posting reviews. Once your feedback ratio is high, you will have a much better chance of being approved. Hope this video helps and enjoy your week of reading!

    I’m confused how “friends” and “followers” differ on Goodreads. I have number of friend requests pending on Goodreads, but they are people I don’t know so I haven’t accepted them. Won’t my feed then be filled with activity from a bunch of strangers? I’m much more interested in my real-life friends book reviews. If somebody requests to friend you, aren’t they automatically following you? Which one does NetGalley look at? (friends or followers?) Also, how do you see how many friends and followers you have? Goodreads isn’t the most user friendly site. 🥴 I can’t find these numbers. Thank you for the tips! 😎

    • @LisaOfTroy
      @LisaOfTroy  Před 3 lety

      This is a really great question. Yes - when you first send a friend request, you become a follower of that person. However, that means that you will see that person's activity in your feed but that person will not see your activity in their feed. Because I invest in the people who are in my feed, I will purge my "Following" Section after a bit of time. If someone doesn't want to support me back then I want to invest my efforts into people who will. There are a couple of people that it would be appropriate for me to follow which would be my favorite authors and the big book players so that I have a good handle on the hottest books and latest trends.

      You can also mark certain friends "top friends," and they will have priority in your newsfeed (supposedly).
