- Did you watch our 5-table Marengo wargame last week and wonder how the rules work? This week, the guys at Little Wars TV review "Snappy Nappy," a 2009 set of rules written by Russ Lockwood for large Napoleonic battles. We score rules based on five categories, then offer a final total score at the end.

A few things that really resonated with me as a historical wargamer of 20 years.
1) I hate paying premium price for a black and white independent published ruleset. Come on they should only be the price of a coffee.
2) Any ruleset like the above that I have purchased, I found I radically changed or homebrewed to the point I gave it my own title. These rulesets are often better for inspiration more than an actual hard and fast ruleset.

I really want to love some of those grand scale wargame rules. I get excited by the concept, and the audacity of the author.
Most reviews seem to highlight at least one factor that kills the concept.
I really wanted to love Rommel, but each stand being a company simply misses the grand scale mark for me.
I got excited when I saw Snappy Nappy, but a list of >5 factors simply kills the flow of my games (I suffered this with DBN also).
So you've saved me at least 2 chunks of £30 each.
I'd love to split the winnings with you, but I blew it all on miniatures.
Not sure where I read it, but I ran across a blog where the guy took Snappy Nappy movement and combat and used Gregs Altar of Freedom C&C, He said they went together seamlessly and he and his group loved the way they ran. Thought you might find that of interest. I am interested in Snappy Nappy but I currently have my hands full building AoF Army and Age of Hannibal, all in 6mm... Got to get painting, Cheers guys!
Wow! A mention of Scotty Bowden's "Empire: A Complete Rulebook and Reference Source to the Napoleonic Wars 1796-1815." I have a second edition copy from 1977. Yeah, Bowden's rules are about as granular as they come, but the reference section is stellar.
Broke into Napoleonics with Empire III. It was a little tedious, a little slow, yet so, so much fun.
Great review guys, and raises the same issues on orders and d10 use/firing that I have seen during play. Only thing we did to speed things up would be to roll all 5d10 at once for morale checks - but the d10s were colour coded, such that we would use the sequence to dictate 1st, 2nd, 3rd dice roll etc etc. Red,White,Blue,Green,Yellow - so if the blue is first morale pass, it's two morale steps as the red and white were fails. Speeds things up by rolling all dice at once.
This is a very good idea! Never would have thought to try it, but I can see where that would save time given the sheer number of rolls that occur in a game.
I would like to see more about how the rules work and it's mechanics in action. Perhaps you could show a few rounds played and narrating what is happening. Even though I like watching this, it doesn't tell me if I would like the rules with my personal preferences in a ruleset.
Having multiple simultaneous tabletops built into the rules is a really interesting concept. Two or three battles/battle pairs spring to mind immediately for its application.

i love 2 things about snappy nappy: the basing and the scale. DBA/40mm basing became the industry standard decades ago- from 3,000 bc through renaissance rules. it should have become the industry standard for the horse-and-musket era- but everyone was based for napoleon's battles- which nobody plays. then age of eagles also adopted NB basing. unfortunate!
Great review fellas I love your channel always great stuff. I have never played Snappy Nappy but I had read a number of accounts of games by Russ and found it an interesting concept. Your comment that it needed more play testing struck me as I had read articles by Mr Lockwood in MWAN (Midwest Wargamer's Association Newsletter) many years ago. I quickly started going through my old MWANs and found a game summary by Russ in the 116 issue which is March/April 2002. This was not the first article he wrote on Snappy Nappy and I know he ran it at many conventions. Not sure how it seems untested. I did notice it says created by Russ Lockwood on the front cover I wonder if another party took the rules core ideas and developed the game without further assistance from Russ? Just a thought.
Hi, there has been a yahoo group for the rules that Russ participates in for many years. groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/snappy_nappy/info There is an interesting variant there for fighting wars of the later 19th Century. 1859, 1866 and 1870. Some posted battle reports for them as well. Loved the 1st season! I'm a Snappy Nappy fan too. I also discovered them thanks to Blunders on the Danube some years ago.
would the tactic system make a bit more sense if you had to make a roll to change the order? like a 4 up, or something similar to make a change of +/-1, and 5 up to make a +/- 2? then one could even have that be a flat rule, and have different nationalities have modifiers, showing the professionalism of the force. just a thought :p eg: A Spanish General wants to shift an order up by one, but because their force lacks discipline, it would be a -1 (and so could only do so on a 5+) however, napoleon wants to shift up by two, normally requiring a 5+ to do so, however, his force being a professional veteran fighting force, gains a +1 on the roll, requiring a 4+ instead. this could allow for the system to function similarly, still giving armies of professional forces a higher chance of changing orders, but still allowing for the vagueries of war!
Another great video Gents. They've all been good and I'll wait for season 2 with baited breath. It would be interesting to see a comparison of Snappy Nappy with March Attack (the PDF is cheap for Chal) and/or Shako. I have both of the latter and am not sure whether to sink more cash into SN since they all do a similar thing. Have a great Christmas and happy New Year.
then there is the scale- as little as 6 figures to represent a division of 4,000 men. that's about 24 infantry figures, 8 cavalry figures, and one gun for a corps. less than 150 figures for all the french at waterloo! awesome. i understand everybody wants to see a thousand figures on a table. i am happy as a minimalist. and happy to avoid silly rules by brits.

@7:45 I mean, to be fair, the guard at the end of Waterloo sorta took one good hit from the British and fled.
that was the middle guard and they had been involved in multiple fights by the end of the battle.
Great game and loved the concept. Silly question as I couldn’t work it out from the video, what scale figures are being used? I thought 28 or 15mm.
These are 15mm figures based on 1"x3/4" bases.
Little Wars TV really well done minis, especially in that scale. I can barely paint 28mm!

Note for the publisher. A nappy in the UK is a diaper. I won't make the obvious pun but if they ever want to market it in the UK then a name change may be worth considering.

Interested to know if you have used Lasalle Napoleonic rules? Fast playing and very simple to learn and remember.
Yes, a number of us in the club have played Lasalle before--it's a great game, though it's at a much smaller tactical scale than the Napoleonic games we typically use in the club. Snappy Nappy, Age of Eagles, Blucher, and Grande Armee are all "army level" games that we play.
I don't think it would be illegal if you posted your QRS, and didn't charge for it. I know I would be interested in seeing it. I've played wargames long enough to know that lots of modifiers does not equal fast play!
I too would LOVE to see your QRS. Maybe there is a way to contact you offline to look at a copy if your not comfortable just posting it up somewhere??
If we get the nod from the author, we would be happy to share our QRS. But we wouldn't want to do so without his permission.

no way guys- you stole the snappier nappy term from my brain! ha ha. we think alike. your review is dead on- tweak the orders and clean up the modifiers. then you get awesome, huge scale, very quick battles. and come on, 30 or even 40 bucks buys a lot of joy. i definitely base my nappy house rules on mr. snappy.
Any chance we’ll get to see any non 40k science fiction systems in season 2? Or is this a historical channel only?
This is definitely a historical channel (one of the few, as there are many, many sci fi gaming channels out there), but we do sometimes play fantasy and sci-fi in the club. So I wouldn't rule out the possibility that you'll see a non-historical game on the channel for a special occasion one day!
@@LittleWarsTV One thing I don't see much of at all in SF wargaming are the 15mm - 10mm rules sets, whether 40K Epic, Dirtside, Striker, etc. That's what I would love to see, not so much the guys with boltguns shooting at each other (though that can be fun, too).

If you guys like orders, try Bolt Action. Only a few orders but it is unit to unit as it is 28mm based. It is WWII so I’m not sure if you guys would enjoy a ton just because of the era. I imagine you guys would but idk.
We play tons of WW2 in the club. And we'll be taking a deep dive into Bolt Action this season on the channel!
btw, imo, nobody likes rolling a d10. everyone loves rolling 2d6. i really think everyone should try fire and fury, age of eagles, etc with 2d6. otherwise, you can get a fresh old-guard unit bouncing off some landwhehr. for shame! ha ha.
This set of rules wins the prize for the "Stupidest Name for a set of Wargame Rules". The authors obviously do not know what the word "nappy" means in the UK.
