In London it is forbidden pretty much every where poor pigeons suffer a lot coz ppl are afraid to feed and those who feed get a ton of hate P.s onion is not harmful ive literally used garlic, turmuric and onion to help heal my pigeons and remove from bacteria and parasites ect
I use to think that giving small piece of bread as a treat like every so often was safe for a bird, I thought of it like, "you shouldn't eat cake everyday, but one piece isnt inherently harmful", but now I'll be sure to make sure my bird never eats bread. Thank you

I was talking about how I would love to have a pigeon after my studies and a friend just straight up told me "ooh pigeon tastes really good! I love to eat that." And I got really mad. I bought snails to eat once and couldn't. I can eat anything. Chicken feet pig intestines blood pudding.. but I love snails and always save them when I see them in the road about to get squashed... I just couldn't do it. They're the cutest guys. So are pigeons so are cows they're all adorable.

So true. I always ensure I feed pigeons and other birds seed mix and fat balls. They are underrated and have a bad reputation. But I notice their Intelligence and awareness each time I feed and watch them.
Pigeons eat snails, because that's how they get calcium for their bones and for forming eggshells. However, they also eat ants and other small insects, but for this they must be kept in the garden and have a lot of free flight. But if you always give grit, only a few pigeons do it.
We have wild city pigeons they will ignore the bread to eat the worms out of the compost bin but they never seem to eat the snails I wish they would. They like green oeas very much. They are sitting on the roof beside me right now@ we have wild cats foxes and lots of city animals come to my moms garden because its wild.
@dirkvoges6218 yeah nothing eats slugs around here even my friends ducks don't eat them cos they prefere snails and other things so they're not bothered. I got pigs once who were like Vietnamese at an all you can eat buffet and crunched through every single snail in the gardenm but the next year there were still thousands of tiny ones. Sorry if I have lots of misspellings I've mislaid my glasses hopefully this is legible.
This is a great video! Thank you for breaking down these misconceptions about pigeons! They deserve better. The thing about dogs eating bones is 100% true, I’m glad you mentioned it. In the past, I had a dog that killed a chicken and he was eating it (didn’t know about it till it was to late) he ended up choking on a bone and died. And he was no small dog, he was a Great Dane mix, very large dog. Don’t feed birds bread and don’t feed dogs bones people!!

Great Dane are such a beautiful breed... i think the misconception that dogs, especially big ones are ok to eat bones came from cartoons (I'm not sure, I'm actually making this up)... i just remember as a kid I watched cartoons and dogs were always shown laying down somewhere and chewing on a bone... or fighting over a bone... And that image stayed with me as "it's ok" for a very long time.... And you know what, there are a lot of adults that still think that it's ok to give chicken bones to homeless dogs... and it's heart breaking for me, knowing how many of dogs die in pain because of it. :(

As a Bangladeshi, I never new some people hate pigeons. They are not found in street here. But many people raise them in yard or rooftop of houses. They are beautiful creatures.

I only dislike pigeons outside my window during the day when I'm trying to sleep. That cooing sound is equally annoying as a lawn mower for me. When I was still smoking I would be outside smoking looking at a pigeon at -30 wondering how it survived; They are amazing yet also so annoying. I feed feral pigeons on my balcony and it is the seed mix for the win. I have put bread and even pizza out for them but that is not what they come to my balcony for. They don't eat it even if all the seeds are gone. Nowadays I give them breakfast, then after that, the only food on the balcony is the seed and grain that falls out of the feeders that I have for the sparrows and bluetits. Luckily the sparrows toss out a lot and this means scraps below.
Be careful, feeding pigeons in Toronto can land you a ticket! I also did it because I had an id saying that I'm from far and don't know the rules. So my plan was to lie to any officer 😂

I put out bird seed for a few pigeons in my garden and have done for years. Whenever I include a seed mix that includes mealworm, the pigeons will ALWAYS leave the worms. They're the only things left and the magpies eat them!
Amazing! Will you ever cover hand raising pigeons from eggs/babies? I am aware that it is quite tricky, especially for the novice keeper but it may help those who have come into possession of a baby pigeon or eggs which need emergency care (and can’t be taken by wildlife rehabbers as some don’t take in pigeons)
Raising young pigeon's are easy as long as there fledged all you need is a mix of grain and water bowl. They will find the grain easily and the bird will take it from there but as for water you may have show them by dipping there beak in the water. As for babies in the nest not so easy as pigeon's both male(cock)and female(hen) both perduce milk and is not easily reproduced can't help there. Hope this was helpful
Wonderful and informative! I have personally seen pigeons eating cat food from the street (italian stray cat shelters). This does not mean that they like or understand what they eat... just that they can digest it, and it looks like seed to their eyes. I guess their digestive system is strong enough (and their liver, also?) to endure some random food.
Hello Grey. Unfortunately they can't digest it. If they would eat a small amount and get food poisoning, some of them would be able to puke it out.. and those who would eat a lot or for some reason would not be able to empty their crop will die. We won't see them dying.. or there would be no piles of dead pigeons in the streets.. because when they feel not well, they usually find safe spot and hide themselves from the predator's and die quietly from food poisoning. In Toronto there are a lot of boutiques that put bowls of water and dog treats out on their porch for dog owners.... and I saw pigeons hungrily trying to swallow huge dry pieces of those dog treats. It was heart breaking for me to see, realizing that those pigeons starved to the point that they would even try and eat those huge dog treats that have absolutely nothing is common with grain or seeds.

Baby cat or dog food/ I'd advise more cat food, is what I fed my young rescue pigeon. After they're an adult they don't seem to lile wet food of any sort

You made me sad ... I helped a pegion couple raise their babies. The babies after flight to this day comes to me 2 times a day begging me for food. I thought i would spoil the babies if i offer them food. So i give them minimal food and shoo them off.... But they keep comming for the little food i gave them daily... I really need some info! As you've said many times, there is not nearly enough information on Pigeons as pets, and I've researched and searched and searched, I'd like to know nesting behaviour in both males and females. I know that you're not supposed to pet anywhere except the head in both because that will stimulate too much egg-laying (females) or sexual frustration (males, i think). I think that females will lay eggs regardless and you're supposed to take them away and replace them? How often do they lay? Will they become aggressive? Will they not want to interact anymore? And I've heard of having to add nesting materials in their cages, why? What kind? Will they become cage aggressive? What will happen if you won't? And how do you tell if you have pigeon dust allergies, because I REALLY don't want to be researching for ages and ages, hoping to finally get one, then I can't even have one because I'm allergic. Please answer :) Edit: Watched the video: Absolutely amazing. Like a documentary, and you are right on everything. It breaks my heart to see them so hungry..

I am definitey planning to make a video about this... but with me working full time, no idea how fast i will make it... so lol am not a super-maga -pigeon -Guru LOL, but I will answer your questions to the best of my knowledge :) ....SO.... *rolling up sleeves*.. here we go ... 1) sexual behavior and "overpetting" - funny enough but i found that overpetting thing true only for parrots. Pigeons are interesting animals that, seems, like they need to bond to someone regardless. So even if you won't touch your pigeon but will be the one that spends a lot of time with it and feeds it - it will bond to you. Female pigeon will lay eggs at the age of 5-6 months regardless if it has "official" mate or not. So you are right, they will lay eggs regardless, and that's normal. Think about this as period in female.. say... dogs.... even if you will not "overpet" your female dog, it will have period no matter what.... same goes to female pigeons - it will lay eggs no matter what (well, unless you will stop giving it food\grit and make your room temperature negative 10 Celsius starting November to March :P) 2) about replacing eggs - if you have a mated pair of pigeons (male and female) then yes, you will need to get plastic eggs (amazon has them) and replace the real eggs with fakes ones. Don't remove eggs completely, cuz that will just restart the cycle and your female will lay another pair of eggs in a week, instate of supposed month (they lay eggs in about every month... so 20 days in the nest, one week - out and about... busy schedule I tell ya :D) 3) being aggressive - if you have amated pair, yes, they will be protecting their nest , but not like fly in your face and try to claw your eyes out.... they will coo, be all puffed up, try to scare you by "biting the air" well and you -if you will try to steel their eggs.... but once they come out of the nest - they are chill and interactive birds.. though yes they are territorial... so if they will think your roommate is trying to "nest in their nest" they will be aggressive... well.. again aggressive meanig cooing and puffing up :D .. but that is easily fixable if every time your roomate will be coming over they will "bring the sacrifice to the pigeons in the form of raw unsalted sun flower seeds " :P 3) nesting material - it's very funny to watch how they are being extremely picky about what "nesting material" they bring to the nest :D. I would say it is important to give it to them cuz they get.... what's the word... like.. they get "not at ease" and really looking for stuff to make their nest cozy :D Just part of their nature... like for us - we need a bunch of sh.... stuff to make our apartment nice and comfortable LOL.... SO, i found that Toby likes stiff (almost like cardboard) paper that is cut in about 10cmx0.5cm rectangles. 4) about allergies - unfortunately the only way to know if you are allergic to bird dander is to go see the doctor and do the test. As far as I know they make like a little scratch on your arm and put the supposed allergen and see how your immune system will react. But again... you may not have it now, but can develop it.... like i have a friend that never had a peanut allergies, but randomly got it as he grew older.... happens.. I hope i answered your questions.... yes\may be o (underline the correct answer :D )
honestly, parrots might be more inclined to eat meat than pigeons, i've seen my late budgie heartlessly murder and eat many fungus gnats, and a lot of species are known to actively prey on small animals, yet they are always told to be herbivores or frugivores

I didn't know that parrot would do that.. well, parrots are more active, may be your pet was doing it as an entertainment, and not because she\he is missing nutrients... question, do you have any idea how to tame feral pigeons? there is this tiny abandoned pigeon that has started living on my terrace, and i kinda want to tame it before it gets eaten by crows or something. would just leaving out food while hanging out passively near the window work?
Hey Blunderbuss13! I'm very happy to hear that you want to give a home to a feral pigeon! Wish everyone had as kind of a heart as you! 1) That process takes a LONG time.... you are thinking a couple of months... I mean, pigeons know they are designed by the nature to be food for Hawks and whatnot.. and so they don't want to be eaten :D 2) there is very little diseases that you can get from a pigeon and they are very hard to get UNLESS your immune system is compromised. With that being said if you are planning to have a bird as your pet you absolutely MUST take it to the vet once you have it. I'm not a professional feral pigeon master .. lol....but yes, feeding it will do the trick :) Leave a little bit of food out (small portion, like... a pinch of say split green peas) and then go away... come back, to see if the pigeon ate everything.. than give a small pinch again on the same spot as before.... at the beginning the main idea is not to scare the bird away (so hanging out by the window may be a bit intimidating at the beginning.. so you may need to go further into the room)..... BUT don't just leave a bag of seeds outside either, if you want to tame it. Cuz then it will be coming as it wants eat as much as it needs and be scared of you. But we need to make sure that the pigeon will associate you with food :D Eventually you will see that the pigeon will be hanging around your terrace and waiting for food (usually in the morning, around 8 - 9am and then evening before sunset). Make sure it will see you when you come out with a pinch of food (btw, raw shelled sun flower seeds are absolute best :D or raw unsalted peanuts)... so like - when you are around "food magically appears" lol.... later on as soon as YOU will see the pigeon sitting by the "feeding spot", come out with a small shallow cat plate with about 1 tbsp of Wild Bird Mix... place it on the "usual feeding spot" and step aside, but so that pigeon will see you :D.. as soon as the pigeon will leave - you should go out and take the plate away..... when the pigeon will come back again - you come out and place the plate out again............. eventually you should move the plate closer and closer into your home. OH one more thing, leave a shallow plate with water at the "feeding spot" available at all times.... They get very thirsty and they love water to bathe. :) Hope that helps. Good luck :)
@@mylittlepigeon278 the pigeon is already kind of used to being near humans, since it used to be kept by some kids down street up until a month ago so it isn't necessarily as timid as just a feral pigeon but i'll keep that in mind. the only things i have at hand to feed them currently are rice and oatmeal, that's fine, right? also, if it does take a few months to get it used to me, i might have to move houses before i can bring it with me without like, a bola or some net gun or something lol

I would still look for raw unsalted shelled sun flower seeds (you can get it from groceries store)- it's the "treat food" for pigeons. Unfortunately I don't know any DIY traps for birds... therefore can't really give you good advice on that matter, I'm sorry :( But I hope everything will work out for the best for you and for the pigeon.

i love this information but i hope youre playing when you say,, ahh humans eat bread or whatever who cares?. i prefer hanging around birds than humans but lets be honest here, lets feed the homeless just as well. homeless care for birds more than rich people do, so what we have here is not a human vs animal thing is just humans vs humans and anything else lol. treat humans just like birds, stay away from the rotten ones and dont forget to be kind to animals and people so that people can pass it on to other birds and people.. thats who we all do it collectively

I only dislike pigeons outside my window during the day when I'm trying to sleep. That cooing sound is equally annoying as a lawn mower for me. When I was still smoking I would be outside smoking looking at a pigeon at -30 wondering how it survived; They are amazing yet also so annoying. Thank you for the video, it was very informative and helped me understand these birds better.

I feed feral pigeons on my balcony and it is the seed mix for the win. I have put bread and even pizza out for them but that is not what they come to my balcony for. They don't eat it even if all the seeds are gone.
Nowadays I give them breakfast, then after that, the only food on the balcony is the seed and grain that falls out of the feeders that I have for the sparrows and bluetits. Luckily the sparrows toss out a lot and this means scraps below.
Be careful, feeding pigeons in Toronto can land you a ticket!
I also did it because I had an id saying that I'm from far and don't know the rules. So my plan was to lie to any officer 😂

I put out bird seed for a few pigeons in my garden and have done for years. Whenever I include a seed mix that includes mealworm, the pigeons will ALWAYS leave the worms. They're the only things left and the magpies eat them!

Amazing! Will you ever cover hand raising pigeons from eggs/babies? I am aware that it is quite tricky, especially for the novice keeper but it may help those who have come into possession of a baby pigeon or eggs which need emergency care (and can’t be taken by wildlife rehabbers as some don’t take in pigeons)
Raising young pigeon's are easy as long as there fledged all you need is a mix of grain and water bowl. They will find the grain easily and the bird will take it from there but as for water you may have show them by dipping there beak in the water. As for babies in the nest not so easy as pigeon's both male(cock)and female(hen) both perduce milk and is not easily reproduced can't help there. Hope this was helpful

I have personally seen pigeons eating cat food from the street (italian stray cat shelters). This does not mean that they like or understand what they eat... just that they can digest it, and it looks like seed to their eyes. I guess their digestive system is strong enough (and their liver, also?) to endure some random food.
Hello Grey. Unfortunately they can't digest it. If they would eat a small amount and get food poisoning, some of them would be able to puke it out.. and those who would eat a lot or for some reason would not be able to empty their crop will die. We won't see them dying.. or there would be no piles of dead pigeons in the streets.. because when they feel not well, they usually find safe spot and hide themselves from the predator's and die quietly from food poisoning.
In Toronto there are a lot of boutiques that put bowls of water and dog treats out on their porch for dog owners.... and I saw pigeons hungrily trying to swallow huge dry pieces of those dog treats. It was heart breaking for me to see, realizing that those pigeons starved to the point that they would even try and eat those huge dog treats that have absolutely nothing is common with grain or seeds.

My bird vet told me to feed pelletted food and give seeds as a treat so she wont just pick out her favorites. Foy's online is an excellent source.

Baby cat or dog food/ I'd advise more cat food, is what I fed my young rescue pigeon.
After they're an adult they don't seem to lile wet food of any sort

You made me sad ... I helped a pegion couple raise their babies. The babies after flight to this day comes to me 2 times a day begging me for food. I thought i would spoil the babies if i offer them food. So i give them minimal food and shoo them off.... But they keep comming for the little food i gave them daily... Your video of the fearal pegion part made me sad...

I really need some info! As you've said many times, there is not nearly enough information on Pigeons as pets, and I've researched and searched and searched, I'd like to know nesting behaviour in both males and females. I know that you're not supposed to pet anywhere except the head in both because that will stimulate too much egg-laying (females) or sexual frustration (males, i think). I think that females will lay eggs regardless and you're supposed to take them away and replace them? How often do they lay? Will they become aggressive? Will they not want to interact anymore? And I've heard of having to add nesting materials in their cages, why? What kind? Will they become cage aggressive? What will happen if you won't? And how do you tell if you have pigeon dust allergies, because I REALLY don't want to be researching for ages and ages, hoping to finally get one, then I can't even have one because I'm allergic. Please answer :)

I am definitey planning to make a video about this... but with me working full time, no idea how fast i will make it... so lol am not a super-maga -pigeon -Guru LOL, but I will answer your questions to the best of my knowledge :)
....SO.... *rolling up sleeves*.. here we go ...
1) sexual behavior and "overpetting" - funny enough but i found that overpetting thing true only for parrots. Pigeons are interesting animals that, seems, like they need to bond to someone regardless. So even if you won't touch your pigeon but will be the one that spends a lot of time with it and feeds it - it will bond to you. Female pigeon will lay eggs at the age of 5-6 months regardless if it has "official" mate or not. So you are right, they will lay eggs regardless, and that's normal. Think about this as period in female.. say... dogs.... even if you will not "overpet" your female dog, it will have period no matter what.... same goes to female pigeons - it will lay eggs no matter what (well, unless you will stop giving it food\grit and make your room temperature negative 10 Celsius starting November to March :P)
2) about replacing eggs - if you have a mated pair of pigeons (male and female) then yes, you will need to get plastic eggs (amazon has them) and replace the real eggs with fakes ones. Don't remove eggs completely, cuz that will just restart the cycle and your female will lay another pair of eggs in a week, instate of supposed month (they lay eggs in about every month... so 20 days in the nest, one week - out and about... busy schedule I tell ya :D)
3) being aggressive - if you have amated pair, yes, they will be protecting their nest , but not like fly in your face and try to claw your eyes out.... they will coo, be all puffed up, try to scare you by "biting the air" well and you -if you will try to steel their eggs.... but once they come out of the nest - they are chill and interactive birds.. though yes they are territorial... so if they will think your roommate is trying to "nest in their nest" they will be aggressive... well.. again aggressive meanig cooing and puffing up :D .. but that is easily fixable if every time your roomate will be coming over they will "bring the sacrifice to the pigeons in the form of raw unsalted sun flower seeds " :P
3) nesting material - it's very funny to watch how they are being extremely picky about what "nesting material" they bring to the nest :D. I would say it is important to give it to them cuz they get.... what's the word... like.. they get "not at ease" and really looking for stuff to make their nest cozy :D Just part of their nature... like for us - we need a bunch of sh.... stuff to make our apartment nice and comfortable LOL.... SO, i found that Toby likes stiff (almost like cardboard) paper that is cut in about 10cmx0.5cm rectangles.
4) about allergies - unfortunately the only way to know if you are allergic to bird dander is to go see the doctor and do the test. As far as I know they make like a little scratch on your arm and put the supposed allergen and see how your immune system will react. But again... you may not have it now, but can develop it.... like i have a friend that never had a peanut allergies, but randomly got it as he grew older.... happens..

honestly, parrots might be more inclined to eat meat than pigeons, i've seen my late budgie heartlessly murder and eat many fungus gnats, and a lot of species are known to actively prey on small animals, yet they are always told to be herbivores or frugivores

I didn't know that parrot would do that.. well, parrots are more active, may be your pet was doing it as an entertainment, and not because she\he is missing nutrients... I don't know :D But thank you so much for sharing your observation! I would never think that a parrot would eat fungus gnats :D
@@mylittlepigeon278 honestly, while he could have had nutrient deficiencies (thanks to him never acclimating to the diet i tried feeding him after being fed only millet in the pet shop i got him from) i think he just liked to vent out his frustrations through blood sport since there was nothing smaller than him to antagonize in the house

Hey Blunderbuss13! I'm very happy to hear that you want to give a home to a feral pigeon! Wish everyone had as kind of a heart as you!
1) That process takes a LONG time.... you are thinking a couple of months... I mean, pigeons know they are designed by the nature to be food for Hawks and whatnot.. and so they don't want to be eaten :D
2) there is very little diseases that you can get from a pigeon and they are very hard to get UNLESS your immune system is compromised. With that being said if you are planning to have a bird as your pet you absolutely MUST take it to the vet once you have it.
I'm not a professional feral pigeon master .. lol....but yes, feeding it will do the trick :) Leave a little bit of food out (small portion, like... a pinch of say split green peas) and then go away... come back, to see if the pigeon ate everything.. than give a small pinch again on the same spot as before.... at the beginning the main idea is not to scare the bird away (so hanging out by the window may be a bit intimidating at the beginning.. so you may need to go further into the room)..... BUT don't just leave a bag of seeds outside either, if you want to tame it. Cuz then it will be coming as it wants eat as much as it needs and be scared of you. But we need to make sure that the pigeon will associate you with food :D Eventually you will see that the pigeon will be hanging around your terrace and waiting for food (usually in the morning, around 8 - 9am and then evening before sunset). Make sure it will see you when you come out with a pinch of food (btw, raw shelled sun flower seeds are absolute best :D or raw unsalted peanuts)... so like - when you are around "food magically appears" lol.... later on as soon as YOU will see the pigeon sitting by the "feeding spot", come out with a small shallow cat plate with about 1 tbsp of Wild Bird Mix... place it on the "usual feeding spot" and step aside, but so that pigeon will see you :D.. as soon as the pigeon will leave - you should go out and take the plate away..... when the pigeon will come back again - you come out and place the plate out again............. eventually you should move the plate closer and closer into your home.
OH one more thing, leave a shallow plate with water at the "feeding spot" available at all times.... They get very thirsty and they love water to bathe. :)

@@mylittlepigeon278 the pigeon is already kind of used to being near humans, since it used to be kept by some kids down street up until a month ago so it isn't necessarily as timid as just a feral pigeon but i'll keep that in mind. the only things i have at hand to feed them currently are rice and oatmeal, that's fine, right? also, if it does take a few months to get it used to me, i might have to move houses before i can bring it with me without like, a bola or some net gun or something lol
@@blunderbuss1395 Oh, i'm sorry to hear that you are limited in time to take the bird with you as you are moving :( But yes rice and oatmeal will do. I would still look for raw unsalted shelled sun flower seeds (you can get it from groceries store)- it's the "treat food" for pigeons. Unfortunately I don't know any DIY traps for birds... therefore can't really give you good advice on that matter, I'm sorry :( But I hope everything will work out for the best for you and for the pigeon.

i love this information but i hope youre playing when you say,, ahh humans eat bread or whatever who cares?. i prefer hanging around birds than humans but lets be honest here, lets feed the homeless just as well. homeless care for birds more than rich people do, so what we have here is not a human vs animal thing is just humans vs humans and anything else lol. treat humans just like birds, stay away from the rotten ones and dont forget to be kind to animals and people so that people can pass it on to other birds and people.. thats who we all do it collectively
