  • This is the state funeral of the late Kenneth David Kaunda (popularly known as KK), first President of the Federal Republic of Zambia (1964 to 1991). Kaunda was no Mau Mau and at no time did he take up arms to fight the colonialists. He did however organize civil disobedience in Zambia after meeting Martin Luther King Jnr who impressed upon Kaunda the virtues and morality of peaceful, non-violent resistance. But he was a passionate lover of freedom as he conceived it (which he thought, like most African president of the time, could be best enjoyed under single-party political systems). He was an outspoken critic of Apartheid. He volunteered Zambia as a frontline state when most of the Southern African countries were under either colonialism or Apartheid. Indeed, almost all African liberation armies had their headquarters in Kaunda's Zambia. The love of freedom is therefore a common denominator between him and Mau Mau. The funeral was attended by several African Presidents including Uhuru Kenyatta, Cyril Ramaphosa, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, among others, all of whom paid incisive and unforgettable tributes. It is archived here for academic purposes. #kaunda #zambia #africa #maumau
