As a hobbyist , this was my go to lens for almost all casual shoots, travel etc. till its motor died. I used it for 5+ years continuous and I still owns and use it. It is so convenient in travel. Its best apertures for my copy is from f/4 or f/5.6 to f/9. It constituted good enough portion of my shorts due to its compactness. Of course other 35 versions of Nikon/Sigma/Tamron were pretty impressive and I used them many times, but this lens was so attached to me that I went back to it on every travel I made, if there are no specific purpose or otherwise.
It is a joy to see this lens to be reviewed in 2021, particularly by Christ with his beautiful photography.
High praise there! Haha
Amen
Love your review style. Less talk about specs, more on the actual performance. This lens is still the best purchase I've ever made. Got is used for less than 150 bucks in pristine condition. 6 years on, still producing lovely images
If all lenses in that price range were of this quality, I would have about 30 of them...
Bought back the good memories from the 10 year ago when I had the lens, the lens was damn sharp back then. This lens has always been well reviewed by various online communities. But was never able to confirm exactly how good it was. Now we know and thanks to your review and glad to see it stands the test of the time.
I was thinking to buy the 50mm 1.8g or 35mm 1.8g what lens should i buy?
I do potraits and events
@@jehualguno1646 assuming you are using apsc camera, I would say that the 50 1.8 is better at portraits but 35 1.8 is better at group shots?
@@jehualguno1646 would you be more specific.. are you doing full frame or APS-C and are comparing the 35mm 1.8g (DX or FX version) ... The 35mm on apsc gives and equivalent field of view of 52.5mm on full frame .. I can see many prefer the 50mm as it will be equivalent to 75mm (still you might have you own preference and I prefer my 35mm as it sharper while my wife prefer the 50mm)
I got started in photography with this lens and shot with only this lens for 6 years. A favorite definitely
@James Topham It should
Is it a good lense compared to zoom lense 18-200
@@simbrishtv7461 It's like comparing apples to oranges. The 35mm is amazing in low light, perfect for portraits because of the background/subject separation, compact but you are limited to 35mm. The 18-200 covers a wide range from wide angle to telephoto but may not be as good in low light and portraits.
@@jd3330 thank u
I got this lense but it is working only on Manual focus .. There is no motor sound.. is it ok ?
By far my favorite lens to use on my D7100. I've had several zooms and primes come and go from my bag, but this DX equivalent of the nifty fifty stays with me. Light enough to carry around all day with no complaints, and the low low price is the icing on the cake. Thanks for the review
I agree. I use this lens on my 7200
I have a D7100 too and this is my favorite lens!!!!!
I also love to use it with my D7100.
I use it on D5600, at f1.8 I find it blurring the subject 😓 any advice
Hi Jeremiah,
Currently I am investigating to buy a new lens on my D5600. I am making use of the regular kit lens (18-55mm 3.5-5.6g). However, I would like to achieve better quality photo's.
Will this be a good option? Or shall I miss the zoom function on the lens?
I'm glad to see that a Nikon did make it into your camera bag, Christopher. If it's not too late, I'd like to wish you all good things for 2021. Keep up the good work.
From all the true budgetographers of this world, many many thanks! Happy 2021.
This really is a must have lens to keep with you in the bag . I recently picked one up , along with a step up ring , UV , and CPL filter for a trip to Ireland for a wedding . Can’t wait to take many pictures of the couples special day !!!
Bought this lense yesterday for my D5300. I´m ver happy! Thank you for your great review!
Best value DX lens for Nikon I have ever used. Versatility is also amazing.
The secret is it is the best value FX lens too..Nikon FX DSLRs you can shoot this in full frame mode and minimal vignetting until about f4-f5.6 it is a great looking lens on FX when you consider the full frame version of this is 3-4 times the price of this
@@arunashamal I didn't know that. Camera switch to dx mode automatically and I didn't try fx mode at all 😅☺️
Best lens for any new nikon shooter hands down. Learned so much about the art of photography with that one. Im tempted to get one again since i sold my old one
I used this lens on an older D5100 when I was still learning photography several years ago. It's a fantastic performer, especially considering its price. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to move up from their kit lens and are on a tight budget.
And if you have a bigger budget ?..
@@saabvanderlinden9214 if you have a bigger budget you buy a new Z mount camera
@@tommihommi1 Gear doesn't matter 99% of the time. I've seen plenty of awful images taken on extremely expensive kit costing well over £10,000.
I just received a D5000 and ordered this lens. Complete novice, looking forward to it.
@@BmiestTV Congratulations. I hope you'll have as fun with it as I did. Another upgrade route is to get a cheap flash to bounce off of ceilings. I got some fantastic indoor shots with the 35mm and SB-400 flash :)
Thanks! I'm loving mine. You skipped the focus speed test...it's fast enough for my needs. It's freeing to take photos with a fixed focal length, and most of the time I'm happy with the results. I think it's underrated as a portrait lens. This is the first of all of your lens tests that I've watched that feature a lens I own... so yay!
Look at that. A budget lens that comes with a lens hood in the box and a gasket on the rear.
I wish Canon would put some of their practices to bed.
I’ve been wondering, what’s the gasket for?
@@camerapunk4109 Dust and moisture protection. It makes a seal around the lens mount.
Canon: "let's put affordability to bed."
I really love Nikon’s philosophy of making everything as pro grade as possible. Even their budget stuff.
Canon doesn't have a 35 f1.8 but they do have AF pancakes eg 24mm f2.8 and 40mm f2.8. It would be great if Nikon did a pancake for APSC. It likely won't happen but it would be nice. Likewise it would be great if Canon could give us a 35 f1.8.
Now that you're finally reviewing Nikon lenses, I can't wait for your reviews of the two other popular AF-P lenses, the 70-300mm and 10-20mm DX lenses. You're by far my favourite lens reviewer on the internet and those 2 are lenses I'm considering, but haven't been able to find good quality reviews for.
Just been looking for a low cost, higher aperture lens when I stumbled across this one. Come on to CZcams and could not have found a better review for it. The level of detail you went into, I feel like I learnt something from this too 😅
Fantastic little well-priced lens and always has been a great stepping stone for new (Nikon) photographers.
great review as usual, it would be nice to see you reviewing the Nikon 28mm f1.8 G, some people say its one of the sharpest lenses Nikon ever made!
Wow, just last night i was looking for a video of you on this nikon 35mm f1.8, you read my mind , thx ✌🏻
Nice to see you going over the Nikon back catalogue. This lens got me back into photography. Lovely bit of kit.
This is the lens that made me fall in love with primes a decade ago. The love affair continues till day :)
Great review - really enjoy seeing your Nikon videos. Hopefully you’re able to do the 35 1.4G one day too.
I have this lens for about 2 years know and i have to say that overall its one must have lens. The only disadvantage is that in some cases where the lens are close to something the autofocus makes a really squeke noise .
Solid review i must say.
Nice to see a non-mirrorless lens review. Still a useful lens today
I’m thinking about buying this off a friend so that I have something simple and not expensive to shoot simple quality photos for a book I’m writing. Your videos answered a lot of questions! Thanks for it!
When I went shifted to Olympus in 2012 (for size/weight reduction due to arthritis) I kept my D200 with this lens for the kids to learn photography. Great lens!
my first big lens purchase when i started too! loved that thing
Thanks! This was one of the first lenses I bought.. and still heavily using! It would be nice to see the review of the Nikon 200-500 f5.6! That would be nice for comparison with the Tamron 150-600 G2!
That lens is excellent. Used it with my old Nikon D5100. Also for astro photography.
Only small downside is the lens flaring at night, but compared to other lenses that's just a tiny "flare".
After switching to Fuji I also noticed that diffraction appears much "later" with Nikon cameras/lenses.
Was never expecting Chris to do review of this. While buying I was in dilema of 35 f/1.8(52.5) or 50 f/1.8(75). Bought this, it never disappointed me. Also this lens made me learn strength & weakness of 18-55 Kit VR 2 Kit lens.
Lol I had the same dilemma - ended up buying both ;-)
What strengths & weaknesses did you find? Where did the 35mm excel vs the Kit lens?
@@KlutchGawd I'd assume low light, sharpness, and distortion?
Tremendous review! Well done.
I owned a D7000 for about a year, and this was my only lens for it. I loved it!
Had one for more than 4 years. Simply loved it. Only sold it as I'm moving to full frame.
This lens is a no brainer if you use a Nikon APS-C DSLR.
Nice review as usually!
Only recently have i upgraded from the standard kit lens 18-55 to the 35 & 55mm f1.8 nikon lenses. Have my Nikon D5300 since release. Glad i decided to make the switch. Faster & brighter with much more detail retained.
I use this lens on my fullframe Nikon D600 and its a very good performer on FX as well. Of course there is a noticeable amount of vignetting but for the price (considered the price of 480€ for the FX compatible 35mm from nikon) its absolutely a strongly recommended lens in my opinion. You can easily create a default import setting for the lens in lightroom (or whatever you prefer to use) to cancel out the vignetting.
Sharpness is at least with a 24MP fullframe sensor totally fine if you dont look in the extreme corners of the image.
Down down to i think f4 to f5.6 gets the vignetting less and starts to increase as you stop further down. I for my point of view dont buy a 1.8 lens to use it that much stopped down especially because I own a 28-75mm f2.8 so thats not a problem at all.
In conclusion its even with a fullframe camera an excellent choice if you do photography as a hobby and dont want to spend four times the price just to get a little less vignetting
PS: greetings from germany and keep up the great work, i really enjoy every single of your videos
I have had this lens for a long time. I love it on DX. I use it on my new to me D700 -FX body. I don't change the setting to crop mode and with one slider adjustment in Lightroom, I keep the corners. I always use a lens hood on all lenses.
I just got this for my nikon d5300 and found this very useful. I can't help but wonder how this lens would compare to some much more expensive lenses of similar focal length. I'm wondering about diminishing returns when spending much much more for pricey lenses.
Oh this lens, such good memories!
Nice review and photographs - thanks. Amazon UK is selling this lens for about £185 in June 2021, a bit too expensive for me. Ebay is selling them cheaper. The Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 G isn't a bad little lens and I guess even the Nikon D3300 would work with it.
Thank you for the review!
This might very well be my first prime once I get further into photography. Used on MBP for the lens, a hood, and a front and rear cap at 94 USD seems like a steal.
I bought this lens when it came out in 2009, and I bought an F5 afterwards because my other film cameras are pre AF-S
and yes, if you can stand the really slight vignette on a full frame machine, this lens really is the bargain of the century
Great review Chris as always! I loved this lens with my D3500, incredibly sharp, great IQ. However when I upgraded to the D5500 this lens rarely focuses accurately (my 55-200 VR II focuses great with both cameras). I found online that this is a known issue with this lens and cameras that have the 39 point focusing system (D7000, D5500, D5600). Are you aware of the issue? What are your thoughts? Thanks
The 35mm and 50mm are Imho essentials. Awesome lenses. And affordable!
God, I loved this lens when I shot Nikon before moving to Fuji.
Was fantastic on my D7000 and D610; I found it to work beautifully on full frame up to about f/5.6 (depending on subject distance). The vignetting could be corrected but I often found it pleasant for portraits so rarely bothered.
This lens’ value for money has spoiled me for other systems; my Fuji lenses are great but I always wonder why as APSC lenses they cost 4x or more than this one!
Nikon's DX darling. An absolute value lens in Nikon's production line. Also 50mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8D, and 35mm f/2 D. Tough to beat for the price, specially great if bought used, half the price. Don't ever sell them, you will feel the guilt forever
I sold mine...and I'm still feeling guilty☹️. Mind you, I've got the Nikon 40mm macro to make up for it.
Thanks for the video! Some People said that with the FTZ adapter you cannot autofocus on some of those older lenses, i dont know if it is the AF-P or AF-S. Thanks for the video.
What would you recommend for my nikon d90 prime lense.? Should i go for 35mm or 50mm? I want an all around lense for travel photo, what should i go? Thanks for the recommendation...
About the autofocus motor, I'd wonder if yours is having issues? The motor on mine is totally silent - it makes zero sounds when running the full focus range, actually, there is more noise when manually focusing
Got to love Aberporth, thanks for review, looking for a lens for AP and macro, would this be a good lens to have? Nikon D5200
Can this be mounted on the Panasonic G85?
this lens is always attached at my D7200...
nice vid!
I am wondering if there is a workaround to bypass the crop mode restriction on mirrorless cameras, as this lens has a large enough image circle to cover FF sensor, with only a little vignetting at extreme corners. It was possible to use this lens in FF mode on older DSLRs, and it was a nice affordable walkaround lens. I will be glad to know if there is a way to cheat the Z cameras (but without damaging the camera or lens of course).
used this on my D3500, great for new comers :)
What lens should i buy first?
Sigma 17-50 2.8
50mm 1.8g
Or
35mm 1.8g
My favorite walkaround lens when I had a DX camera. Sold it when I moved to fuji but now the 50mm G takes it place with my D750. Now I need a replacement for the 50mm's use when I had a D5300 haha.
Interesting thing about this lens is that it covers almost an FX area. There's a lot of vignetting but usable. Unfortunately, Nikon z system autocrop and you cant do anything about it other than twisting the ftz adapter a little bit to disconnect the electronics after focusing. Also, this was my first non-kit lens and the sharpness and contrast just wowed me. Didn't think my camera can produce such results.
I used this lens on a d610
The vignette was minimal and easy to correct in lightroom
Best lens for the money
fun fact: you can use this lens on a full frame dslr with minimal vignetting, as long you use it wide open up to f5.6, this is a magic lens
Can I adapt this lens to a canon ef/efs mount?
is that lence work with z6 mark 2 for video
Nikon shooters now and in days of yore - here's the first lens you bought post-kit. What a dandy!
Great video
It would be also nice to see a review of the 35mm f/1.8G ED on Aps-c.
My first lens yeah😁, amazing one!
Hi there, can it be mounted on a canon M50 ?
Hello, can i use this lens on Nikon D810?
I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Nikon makes very little profit off of this lens given its quality, but they offered it at such a great price point to give DX users a great affordable lens.
Thank you for the video it was very informative. But I still can’t find the answer I’m looking for involving D-X lenses. does it be in DX lens mean that it is 35 mm and you get 35 mm? Or is it still cropped to about 52 mm?
John, if it's not too late for you. DX lenes are for crop sensors (APS-C), while FX lenses are for full frame (35mm) senors. (On Nikon DSLR cameras)
Thank you very much 🌻
Thank you for testing Nikon lenses! 👍👍👍
Is this lens good with the d7500?
i hope you’ll review the tamron 70-300mm soon it’s full frame/APSC they’re new $500 budget E-mount lens has been making waves
Is this still available with d7200??
I have 50mm and looking at adding the 35mm for something different.. I get such great shots with the 50mm
What’s the rubber gasket at the bottom for? It’s not something I see that often among certain camera brands
it's there to stop spilled beer getting into your camera.
It is a shame that the Z full frames grey out the FX DX option for this lense. I have it from DSLR days and it works on FX just fine!
Can i use the lens with Nikon Z5
Is it possible to use this lens with manual focus Christopher, didn't hear you mention that in the video
Yes you can! It also supports focus override, where you can grab the focus ring and adjust the focus manually without switching the AF/MF button.
When i shoot portraits i have my tokina 100mm on my Z6 and 35mm f1.8 dx on my d7100. I love the images from both the lenses.
I made a request about to be able to use this lens on fullframe z bodies with an option to not only in dx mode but in fullframe mode as well like dslr's. Nikon said they would consider it. One year has past since then.
Is the 35 prime better then the 50?
Interesting either you have a good copy or i own a bad one. My copy is good in the middle but the corners have absolutely no sharpness and a lot of fringing.
Can you use this lens on a Sony camera?
It's like you had read my mind 🤯
I second the notion that it's useable on fullframe bodies as well, when i got my D750 i wanted to spare the expense of a new 35mm, and apart from slightly heavier vignetting in the corners it usually covers the whole frame. (there are some lighting conditions that make some slight cropping necessary) If you stay under f/8 that is, darker than that and the corners are totally dark.
It also works fine on my D850 in FX mode, minimal vignetting easily fixed in PS.
shame that the z7 doesn't allow you to shoot on FF. on my recently upgraded d750 I've fallen in love with this lens again - it does have a heavy vignette when focusing far or at aperture 4+ though, but it can be corrected or cropped and the quality for the price is astounding!
Can you do the Fuji XC 35mm f2 next? I was just wondering if I should get the Nikon and adapt it or get the Fuji for more $$$
I've tested that Fuji lens already
Can u tell me, would it work on Nikon D3100, old model from 2010?
Yes it does!
why Nikon doesn't make 50 mm DX lens?
It gives heavy vignette but it's acceptable on full frame. I shot it on a Nikon D810.
wow, really silly that Nikon limits the mirrorless cameras in software to not allow this
@@tommihommi1 it’s not software. The lens is for the smaller APS-C and if you shot it in full frame, the edges would be completely black because the lens doesn’t show the sensor anything there.
@@cameron-w as lots of people have said, the lens is OK on full frame unless you stop it down. On previous nikon full frame cameras, the software doesn't prevent you from using DX lenses.
@@cameron-w I've used it for a few years with D700/D600. Only corners are dark, so It needs about 1.1x crop or 4:3 ratio
great lens.
I would like to have a 35mm f1.8 lens this cheap this good on canon EF mount
I borrowed this lens to my girlfriend and it's basically glued to her D5300. This is such a wonderful and cheap lens!
Hey Christopher, can you review also the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 for the Z-mount?
A review is coming
@@christopherfrost The Aps-c performance would be interesting
@@christopherfrost The 35mm f/1.8G ED is interesting, too. According to a review, it delivers better sharpness at f/1.8 than the 35mm f/1.8 S
Yes!
