  • A man starts walking north at 4 ft/s from a point P. Five minutes later a woman starts walking south at 5 ft/s from a point 500 ft due east of P. At what rate are the people moving apart 15 min after the woman starts walking?

Ohhh ok I get confused when to use negative signs. I thought walking south would mean -5 ft/s (or the problem in my textbook, walking west/left would also be negative)... whereas walkng north / east / right would be a positive rate of change. That always trips me up. Because with the falling ladder problem or the coffee dripping problem, you use negatives.
