Why Is Safi Pottery So Expensive?

- Marked “Safi” behind the utensils, the label does not represent a person or a brand. It’s the name of Morocco’s historic coastal city, which should rather be called the country’s pottery capital.
It starts with a mixture of clay and water but after several days of creative labor, it becomes a work of art. While it is sold at relatively lower prices in the country, it could become quite costly reaching bigger markets. But what makes it so expensive?
To find the answer, we visited Sintir Mohamed in Safi, who has been working in the field for over 50 years. His relationship with the clay is of passion and spirituality.
Safi pottery holds the reputation of artistic and cultural heritage of value beyond estimation. It continues to boost the local economy, brings foreign investment, and contributes to the country’s appeal as a cultural tourism destination.
The story of Safi’s pottery is a lesson of passion and consistency. It teaches us that If you have the privilege of working on something you love, never let it go!
