@@Jaysin999 - The cost was for sending the rover to Mars, not for merely acquiring the footage of sand and the sound of wind xP. Its purpose is to collect soil samples and the such like, so we can know more about what Mars is made up of.
It's actually more difficult to go to the bottom of the ocean than to space due to the extreme pressures of the water. So it makes sense that 2.5 billion usd is spent on a space mission
Edit: i think it'll probably cost less money to reach the bottom of the ocean, but space is a more complicated environment, it is more alien than anywhere on earth and it is extremely far to reach, and you need an incredibly high speed transport capable of withstanding the amounts of radiation of space and high speed velocity of takeoff in Earth's atmosphere (and capable of sustaining life for extended periods in the case of manned missions). So yes billions of dollars sounds about right. The technology for it is not cheap. It costs less exploring the ocean, but the technology to go into the extreme depths of the ocean almost doesn't exist. So it would cost a lot more in the long run to go into the ocean depths (money and potentially human life). Remember the Mariana trench is the deepest part of the ocean THAT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED. But we have unmanned space objects that have already gone beyond the solar system.
Well technically speaking, yes and no. Anyone can just go and dive to the bottom of the ocean.its been stated that it's easier to "explore" under water... Whether they fail or not to make it back up is a different story, but it's still possible for anyone to go down there. Yet for Space it can easily fail half way through and never make it...and it's a 1 in a million chance for someone to even be chosen to go which makes it even "more difficult" to get to Space.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when scientists say that only 95% of the ocean has yet to be explored, it means that no human has physically visited it. We've already searched those areas via satellite; the reason we don't send humans down to explore the rest of the 95% is mainly because those parts of the ocean are filled with a whole lot of nothingness. A lot of people don't seem to realize this, hence why people still believe the Megladon exists.

Believe it or not, it is actually cheaper to send the rover to mars for that price, than it would be to build a vessel that could withstand the depths of the deep ocean, to my understanding we dont even have the capability even if we threw money at it.
