Actually, for the bear -considering I think that’s a grizzly- if they were loud and rowdy, they could’ve been perceived as threatening, prompting the bear to get agitated and maul them. Staying calm in that situation actually probably saved their lives. Running? Bears out-run humans. Shooting? Like you said, that arrow wouldn’t have done much of anything.
Edit: Additionally, running from a bear only makes it think that you’re prey. From it’s perspective, you’re running away like a deer or a rabbit would, so you’re probably food. Standing your ground calmly is enough of an indicator that the bear knows it should respect you…or at least that you’re not prey and that you could fight back. The last thing a bear wants to do is waste energy on trying to fight you if it doesn’t have to, so if you’re trying to leave, I’d hypothesize that it’s actually better to walk away calmly rather than run away in fear.
Also to mention, they are in the bear's home. That calmness is important though.

Ross' story reminded me of how my dad bought a new car and less than two weeks in, on a drive home late in the evening, a large boar ran out onto the road. Bam! Front of the car got smashed, the boar was down, but the boar got up like one second later and just ran off. Now, reminiscing a long 15 years later, dad jokingly complains about it, saying he didn't even get any steak meat to show for it.

talking about running into dear a few years ago I was with my brother while he was workin as a truck driver and we were in Iowa somewhere and as we were coming over a hill another semi was in the opposite lane hit a deer going about 45 and it bounced the deer onto our semi and omg the poor deer was destroyed, Blood all over the front of our Semi

So freshman year of college I'm going to school in South Carolina. I'm from Chicago. So me and my neighbor are in his Dodge pickup truck on a Friday night. We are just driving around and smoking blunts. We get lost in the backroads about 10 miles from campus. And just more and more blitzed. I'm behind the wheel. As i'm hitting a curve around 35mph, this stag comes leaping out of the the brush about 8 feet in front of the truck. No time to react.
Just bulldoze this poor thing. It rolls up the hood and the antler goes THROUGH the windshield and if it was longer would've been a Final Destination moment going through my face. The VERY hard braking pulls it back out and it rolls about 10 feet in front of the truck.
My friend doesn't get mad at me thankfully, cause sober or high, no braking in time to avoid that. But he's also a hunter, so instead of calling animal control, he puts it out of it's misery, we load it into the back, and take it back to the dorm cause our other neighbor has a grill. So he cleans it and everything and we had grill outs for the next week for half our dorm building lol.

Yeah, I live in North Easton PA and yeah they’re there everywhere yes you have a higher chance hitting a deer more times in your life then you hit the lottery. It is quite often here but there’s there’s days that you will not hit them but there’s days that they won’t cross. There’s times that they won’t do that either or don’t walk slowly or you’ll get them for they will or it, like I said, you have a high chance of having them here oh and potholes do we have those as well?
