- This tutorial is mainly about fitting a zip inside a tote bag, and showing how I add a tab to the end of a zip. There are many different ways of doing this, but this is the way I think you’ll find easiest.
The fabric I’ve used is one of my Eden panels, the panel measures 150cm x 48cm and is available when in stock from www.debbieshore....
Materials for the tote bag:
Two 14” [36cm] squares of outer fabric, two of lining and two of Bosal single sided fusible foam, cut a 2” [5cm] square from the bottom corner of each piece.
For the zip panel. Four pieces of outer fabric each measuring 10” x 2.5” [25cm x 6cm]
For the zip tab, one piece of outer fabric measuring 1.5” x 3” [4cm x 8cm]
For the handles, two pieces of outer fabric each measuring 26” x 4” [66cm x 10cm], fusible fleece or interfacing to the same size.

Oh I love that little iron that you're using so handy!
You made this so easy, I've been making my bags for several years and now I'm going to try your way for my way seems much more complicated.
beautiful bag!! I love it. I would lovely to make grocery bags this way... the only exception is I would prefer longer straps so I can use it as a crossbody bag if need be!
Thanks finished mine today :) couldn’t have done it without your video x
Hi Debbie, I’m making a large version of this to be a lap top bag, and I’ve put a double zipper in. I now realise that I should have put a tab on each end as by folding the zip down ( and it looks lovely) the zip can come apart. So I’m sewing a “patch on that end to hide it.
You are an amazing talent! Thanks for posting!!
Thank you for the video unless I’m crazy I believe you sewed your zip to your lining 1 1/2 inch on one side and 2 inch on the other but when you were finished you couldn’t even tell great job.
I love everything you do, also any chance in making another sewing machine mat that you have under your machine. The same with different pattern and also bigger please.
Great project. Thanks for sharing.
Loved this tutorial
Thank you
I always wondered how you did this, I would like to purchase a disc if you do one please
Thank you so much 😊
😊❤love your teaching
Great bag more secure with a zip.
Great tutorial …❤. Quick question may I fuse the bosal with canvas fabric ? Thanks
Beautiful bag!
Hi Debbie. Firstly big big thank you for all your videos. Fairly new to sewing and made a few of your bags. I want to now make a tote with. Zipped top to take away and use to travel. Thought the zip would make it a little more secure. I want to make it just a little bit bigger so am I right in thinking the top panels will always be 4” smaller i. e. if bag panel is 15” the top panel would be cut to 11”? I have some fairly expensive material and don’t want to waste any! Again, thank you so much. I just love your videos 😊😊
Hello Debbie! Thank you for your great tutorials. I have a JUKI DX 5 and love it! I am learning to make bags and want to try this one. Do you have a pattern for sale or download? I want to make a tote bag, using single sided fusible stabilizer!
