    My big struggle is predicting how long things take to complete. I always end up being way too ambitious about how much I can get done in an hour. I guess I'll get better at estimating how long stuff takes with experience. ^_^

      Katy Adelson Same here, but I've also realized, for me, I'm not always working "smart" in that time block. I'm the type of person who will always take 2 hours for an hour long task because I get caught up on doing it really well, or I get distracted, or too excited about a task and then spend extra time on it. I have a habit of working on the task until I feel satisfied with the result, which is not productive for everyday things. I really had to learn that "good enough" is ok and how to pace myself to stay in the time block I made. Everything I finish is not the best thing I've ever done, but that's not possible in grad school, so I've learned to do things "well enough" and in the time I scheduled. I also feel much better with an "ok" product finished in my allotted amount of time because that means I can spend quality time on the really important projects.

Also I wanted to get my workouts to become more consistent so I can lose a little weight and, more importantly, get stronger. I'm a full time college student in my 3rd year with 2 jobs. I feel like waking up early has increased my productivity and I feel better because I'm doing the things I want to do first and then focusing on what I have to do for the rest of the day. I’m a mom of three, and over the last few months I’ve learned how much more I can get done when I block out my calendar. This was the only way I made sure I scheduled some me time initially. Then I started applying it to other aspects of my life and have found myself getting so much more done rather than getting sucked down a social media hole.
    Having kids can make it a little difficult to plan for things. You never know when they may get sent home from school due to illness, behavior problems, etc. so I generally try to schedule my most important activities and/or appts for first thing in the morning so the likelihood of them getting done is greater. I try to be done with all of my work and to-do list items by the time they get out of school so that I can then focus my attention on them. My kids are currently going through some things right now so my goal is to always prioritize them and tend to their needs first. I’m only about a month in but so far it’s been going well!

Please when you mean you block out your calendar..does that mean you lost your activities of the day and list out the time it is going to take or it should take OR you plan each activity of the whole day into time frames from when you wake up till when you’re done with work or when you sleep🥴 or something?. Thanks❤️

    The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time. Don't be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of. One man gets only a week's value out of a year while another man gets a full year's value out of a week. Hi guys!! Let me just share a quick story with you guys. :) We own a cookie shop business in our college town. When we first started it, we were living in our car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. We just graduated college as well. We started the late night cookie shop out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night. We were living in our car in the parking lot of the shop at the time with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And now we have 2 storefront locations in New Jersey and Florida! We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams.

    Blocking is such a powerful tool! I used to write to-do lists everyday for a year or so to be more productive, but I always feel bad for not finishing the items on it. Now that I have watched your video on how to use a calendar, I have been writing a to do list and then blocking the time out for it on my calendar. It lets me know that I have to get a certain task done by a certain time, which gives me helpful pressure to finish it off instead of dragging it on. It also shows me how much 'chill' time I have/will spent, so that I don't get discouraged by the idea that I work all day and have no 'me'-time. Thank you so much for your videos, Amy!

  • @daniellebrissing9485
    @daniellebrissing9485 Před 6 lety +45

    Scheduling is darn near impossible with kids...but I've got some tips! 1. I know you said you hate them, but have a list of backups (tasks that you know will take 5, 10,15, 30, etc minutes) and use them wisely. It could be as easy as pinning blog post ideas, or saving a couple of articles to read later). 2. Get a dictation app for your phone (or utilize voice notes-as long as it transcribes). This is so you can "do work" while driving or if you have your hands full. Use the dictation to write notes, presentations, thoughts, edits, etc. 3. Be kind to yourself. I wake up at 5am everyday just so I can shower, dress, and get myself together for my office job (this does not include a workout...that I'm still trying to work in...somewhere), then I get the kids up...I meditate in the shower...yeah...it's not ideal...but it's the best I'm gonna get at this stage in life. Recognize that and even if you take 15 minutes to work on your passion project before you pass out after the kids are in bed...you're 15 minutes closer to your goal.

My mornings are so much better with even 30 mins to myself before everyone gets up and I am MUCH nicer to everyone because I put myself first. Cheryl Upper hey! I just found another multitask session for myself....I started following Sarahbethyoga and she has a 10 minute wall bed time routine. She basically stretches her legs on a wall while laying down and it's been said their are some great benefits to that. Well it's 10 minutes...just the right amount of time for a sheet mask!

    • @cherylq-u8916
      @cherylq-u8916 Před 6 lety +3

      Danielle Brissing great idea! Ok a few other ones off the top of my head. You can do yoga in your bed before you even get up, in the dark. Just even 3 or 4 bed poses searchable on Pinterest. Clean the bathroom while kids are in the tub, clean the tub during one of my showers each week (realistically every two weeks). Put wiping the cupboards and some windows on my kids activity list. I have been calendar blocking for about two months. I found out I can spend 5 hours per week watching ‘This is Us’ binges after the kids go down. I deserve it right? So I think. I’m much more mindful of that time waster. I double task anytime I have a Netflix craving. Match socks or fold laundry or label file folders etc. G2G morning routine time!

    As an educator who is currently taking on a shift in time management with virtual teaching, this is very helpful. It is definitely taking more time to plan, create online learning modules, create assignments, grading, teaching, etc...I think the working at home aspect really makes one lose boundaries of time to work versus time to close the laptop and relax. The temptation to work beyond reasonable times is always there, but this also has to do with the increased amount of work that needs to be done. I’m really going to try stopping at a certain point each day as I’m finding my work melding into the evening beyond my usual schedule. A colleague of mine also recommended setting off a timer at 5:00pm when working at home. This is another way to add that element of blocking time and having something to look forward to. Thank you for sharing your advice!

  • @RebeccaShores
    @RebeccaShores Před 6 lety +6

    I was a huge time blocker before I had a kid. Now I have a one year old which makes time blocking things a lot harder. I am still able to plan somewhat, so I plan to get up before her, plan what I can do during nap time (this I may get 1 hour or 4 so it varies), and then what I can do when she goes to bed. When I get "baby free" blocks I try and use that time well. I am sure it'll get easier once she's in school so I'll have more consistency. I find that to do lists work for the more variable times, so my to-do lists have a hierarchy and an estimated time, and I'll fit in extra work if she ends up taking an extra long nap.

    As a parent I started watching ur channel to get up earlier (still working on it, let’s be real, my alarm hasn’t woken me up since the first baby came) but I kept watching because I see parenting & household management as “my job” & it needs to be productive for my sanity & for the family to function well. No matter how busy the babies & kids make you, often you can get 15mins here or there to get something done. So wanted to let you know as a mum these tips do work! Break down big jobs into 15min jobs that you can immediately jump into before the kids need you again, if they don’t then jump back into another 15min job. More productive days lead to calmer nights that aren’t filled with housework, but with wine. 🍷

    I love this! I'm working on incorporating more house-related things in my calendar. I've integrated emptying the cat box and stretching my legs into my bed time routines - check! So soon I will be returning to work after a long leave and that's where my system maintenance will really be put to the test. My job is super messy with tasks as I'm a teacher - sometimes I spend 15 minutes at school finishing something before I leave, sometimes it's an hour or two. But I'm hoping that blocking off my calendar to do these tasks will help me find the time to be my most excellent, organized teaching self! And maybe cleaning the house won't be so bad if I spend a few minutes on it every day. I love watching your channel because I get excited about learning ways to be better!

    Truth time: I have three kids at home and work in academia. I calendar block like crazy, and would be lost without it. But does it work? Between colleagues, students, my children, my partner, weird viruses brought home from kindergarten, the occasional writer's block and my parents ageing, my calendar-based plans work out about 30% of the time. No more. However, if I didn't have them, these 30% would also break away. And that would cause mayhem. So no, it doesn't really work, but yes, it helps, as long as you don't guilt-trip yourself when it doesn't work.

    • @rachellecastorillo7282
      @rachellecastorillo7282 Před 6 lety +8

      uclmu2008 I was gonna say.. the kids can't just be urgency like a boss pulling you away from a project. But you can schedule the important things like their eating, bathing, etc. But their needs are just so much more. But at least knowing there are other moms out there who say they don't really get even 80% of what they have planned helps lift the guilt a bit

    • @jeanne_guitton
      @jeanne_guitton Před 6 lety +4

      Yes, I think with children the order of the day is flexibility. (Same with creativity, by the way - if I write a research paper and it flows and then admin time pops up on my calendar, I'd be a fool not to ignore it :-)). Everything else must come second, at least for me, or I'd go mad and never get stuff done. So I think calendar blocking only works for me as a parent and as a researcher if I go into it with modest expectations - I really don't need any more self-served helpings of guilt :-).

      Once my daughters were home from school, I tended to everything else. Supper, dishes, vacuuming, washing clothes, ironing, baths. I encouraged my girls to do their own homework or to stay after school for extra help, because I didn't have any extra time to help them. They both did well.

  • @tanyaneitzke2058
    @tanyaneitzke2058 Před 6 lety +8

    Sorry this is long, but wanted to share....This deft helped and loved the idea of blocking in lit everything. I have three jobs: I teach at a college, full time Artist and waitress on the side, so my calendar (passion planner) is my bible. With everything I had going on I was sooooo overwhelmed and my mind felt clustered all the time. My old routine was that I created long to do lists and would wake up about 6/7 and stay up till 1/2 everyday. I would get up feel like crap all day but push through thinking I was getting things done, but I wasn’t. I would always say I was busy but still felt clustered and everywhere in my head. Finally I watched this video on yen CEO routine and it’s changed everything. I realized my old routine (the one I had since undergrad) wasn’t doing anything and I could no longer stay up late, because at 6pm I had no motivation anymore. So realizing all this bring so much importance to my AM and PM routine. PM I stop email social media at 7, I do dishes, tidy up the house,’take out trash, turn down lights, take an epson salt bath with candles and no lights on, journal, plan out my top three priorities (based on what’s coming up), spray pillow with this amazing oil that’s soothing and go to bed by 9. AM I get up at 4am, change to workout clothes, workout for at least 30 min, meditate for 5 minutes (thanks to an app) journal again, look at planner, drinks lots of water, make coffee, shower and be ready by 5:30 or 6. Then I start those three top priorities, check email. I have also (because of my three jobs) made each day a certain day. I realized if I didn’t have a designated studio day, I wasn’t painting and getting commissions and my own work done. So now I : Monday school, Tuesday waitress/studio, Wed school, Thursday studio/ waitress, Friday studio, Saturday waitress, Sunday waitress/school. This has all helped me so much. Also your videos add on and help me to continue to twick what I do. Thank you!

    I just have to say that I am a parent of two kids a boy and a girl. And Amy’s time management tips help me so much. I seriously think that instead of giving her negativity you should give her appreciation for her time in trying to help other people. None of us have it all figured out and honestly if all you are going to do is give her complaints then watch someone else that you do get help from. Doesn’t that make way more sense than spending your precious time leaving a bad vibes comment. Let’s face it it’s so easy to get sucked into binge watching tv or picking up our phones 87 times a day so try to plan your time and accept when life gets in the way but don’t be hating others.

    I was calendar blocking for a while. I had what I was doing every moment of the day blocked off, including when I was eating and sleeping, but I stopped because I felt like I was spending as much, if not more, time planning my days than actually doing the things I've scheduled. Also if I've scheduled something and then I can't stick to it, I feel a bit mad at myself, but I know I need to try to move past that.

      I was calendar blocking religiously for months and got totally burnt out for the exact same reasons. I stopped for several more months, eventually realizing I was back in the habit of wasting time because I didn't have my day blocked off. I started again a couple of months ago, but I'll only do it during my 4-5 "real" working days so that 2-3 days a week are intuitive and more relaxed. That's helped me a lot to stick to it and not feel like a slave to my own planner!

    I've been an active journaler pretty much since childhood, though it really picked up more in my adolescent years. Up to maybe 2 or 3 years ago it was pretty much only recapping my day or week, poetry here and there, and maybe a bit of the "Should-do" listing. Only more recently have I been getting increasingly better at putting my "Resolutions Into Action" and instead of creating "Should-do" lists I've been blocking with basically itineraries for my days and what I know I need to get done throughout the week. Calendars have always been active because they're good reminders and make keeping track easier.
    What's really been helping though...even just in making a decision and STICKING with it, has been the decision to wake up early EVERY morning at the same time and actually get myself out of bed with that first alarm. It gives me more time in my day and in a way forces me to be more productive and I LOVE it! I've been doing great! The social media addiction, however, is still a problem, which is why this morning I made a point to deliberately and consciously NOT check any of my notifications until AFTER I showered and made breakfast, basically I made the decision to say "No" to social media until I complete my Morning Ritual.🙏

    Hey! I just found your channel yesterday. Started a videography & social media marketing company with my husband this year. I have been so overwhelmed with all the things that need to get done ✅ I am trying your blocking method and working to regiment my time. Really helpful!

      @@michaelanagnostis6839 it has helped me when things are regular and commit to it. Had some irregular things come up the last couple weeks. Really trying to refocus!
