      There's one application I can see for directional audio cables: Star grounding. You can shield an audio cable by grounding ONE side, and there are some opinions whether it's best to ground on the source or sink side.

    Dave, you nailed it with the control room matrix (ie, "monitor matrix"): it's basically a monitor switching box, with a few added features (you were also correct with the Talkback function, which is also usually built into mixing consoles.) Recording studios, especially ones that work with bands and musicians, will test mixes through several different types of monitors to ensure that the mix sounds good on a wide range of speaker types. It's not uncommon to see a large set of monitors that cost $5k _each_, alongside the cheapest, shittiest speakers available. Somewhat ironically, the "cheap and shitty" speakers are often most representative of what the vast majority of actual listeners will end up listening to the recording on!
    There are much nicer monitor matrix units available, but ultimately they're all just glorified speaker switchboxes.

    You were right Dave. Wenger belongs to Victorinox. Wenger and Victorinox sold a lot of their pocket knifes at duty free shops at airports worldwide. After 9/11 small pocket knifes were forbidden and both companies lost a big portion of their sales volume (30% for Victorinox). Wenger went bankrupt and Victorinox could remain in the profit zone, but only just. Victorinox then bought the remains of Wenger and kept the brand and production site alive. In 2013 Victorinox announced that the brand Wenger will no longer be used for knifes. Instead they are now called Victorinox Delémont collection.

    13:30 This is a bidirectional RF amplifier for cable TV and cable net (one wideband amp for downstream + cable TV, one narrow band amp for upstream, separated with directional coupler). One input (bidirectional, so it's an output also for the upstream), an output for the TV, and another output for the cable modem.
    The blue blobs at the F connectors are probably HV ceramic caps for DC decoupling, not PTCs (I'm watching it at 480p, so cannot read the values).

No worries about opening late, poor marketing sort of failed QikTag, although quite a few electronic companies have ordered them as a dynamic business card slash keychain. The original idea is that the owner can set what information is shown on the linked page. Sometimes you wouldn't want to show your cell number, on house keys certainly not your address (as someone mentioned in the comments). A PCB is great material for this due to its durability. Cheers!

    Nordost combats all of these losses by employing a “Micro Mono-Filament”
    dielectric alternative. This technique allows wire to increase its VP (Velocity
    Propagation) as much as 20%. The Mono-Filament is an extruded fluoropolymer
    string-type material, helically wound around each signal wire at a predetermined.

    A control room matrix is used to route line-level audio signals between various inputs and outputs. E.g., to route a mixing desk to alternate pairs of monitors (audio monitors, aka speakers); or switching between a computer audio system (recorded audio) and the main mixer outputs (live audio).
    This seems like a simple task, but something like this really makes life easier. A mixing engineer would have multiple speakers -- e.g., one or more pairs for technical listening, plus another one or more pairs to see what it sounds like on smaller (consumer) speakers, etc. Notice also the mono switch, to make sure the stereo material can be combined without excess phase cancellation. The Dim (or attenuate) switch is a partial mute -- the "what did you say?" button.
    This one also provides a handy talk-back mic and footswitch control so you can speak between sound-isolated control and performance rooms.

    Regarding the smart watch, the IC mounted on the display's flex cable is not an LCD controller; it's a capacitive touch controller -- this is super common construction found in many small form-factor displays. The LCD's electronics would be embedded close to the panel itself.
    Also, Song is a family name, not a first name. Family names are often written first in many Asian cultures.

    It would be interesting to test some $40,000+ cables, While the $7000-10,000 cables may have been BS, that may be because they just didn't put enough money into them. A few thousand extra dollars into the audio cables is sure to enhance your listening experience. Best of all, you will feel as if a weight has been lifted as your wallet grows lighter and lighter with each additional audio cable.

    The plastic case of that splitter is the same style as Global Invacom's range of Loftboxes and other home RF distribution kit so I'd suspect they were the manufacturers.

    And yeah, Porton Down is in England, not very far from me. As far as I'm aware much of the government stuff is being replaced with private sector companies, which are slowly being declassified. You really REALLY shouldn't write the address to the house your key goes to ON the keys themselves. Because if you drop your keys or have them stolen a malicious person suddenly knows which lock the key unlocks. So the tag-idea isn't that far off actually. You should include as little personal information that could be matched to you and your house on your keys without going trough a trusted 3rd party first.

    Still have and actively use my old TI-89, pre "titanium" model. Did the firmware update to 2004 version some years back, as I recall. Sure, you can get by with those 83s and such, but why bother with it if you don't have to? I think the 89 is one of the last ones you can still program in assembly for as it comes out of the box. A Control Room Matrix is to be able to switch from different input sources and select different output monitors so you can reference your mixes/masters. The "Speaker B" switch actually disables "Speaker A" when it is depressed so that you can only reference through one set of monitors or another. The Subwooder output is always active when selected. Quite a useful system.

    The Samson unit is for controlling your studio monitor speaker(s) from your audio source. Theyre great for A/Bing the difference between several speaker desitnations.
    This is an analogue only unit obviously but where the real power comes in is of you have multiple sound cards and digital sources you can switch between those sources and speakers. I use my PreSonus Central Station for such tasks.
    The trick is getting one that doesn't colour the sound at all as this can greatly effect your sound design process and mastering of the audio.
    This one looks like it would be handy for a couple of PCs and a single set of speakers or just using headphones.

    Just FYI Dave. Phono is generally used to describe an input with RIAA filtering applied to correct the frequency curve of a record player stylus. More correct would be Quarter inch Jack inputs :)

    • @nickguy6820
      @nickguy6820 Před 8 lety

      +The Bright Pixel In the US, yes. Elsewhere it's very common to refer to an RCA plug as a "phono plug" (or jack.)

    • @TheBrightPixel
      @TheBrightPixel Před 8 lety

      I'm not American, and I'm not in the US, I'm an Aussie working all around the world as an AV integrator. He used the term RCA plug. He was referring to the quarter inch jack as a phono input. Phono, is short for phonograph. Phonographs use RIAA preamps.

    • @nickguy6820
      @nickguy6820 Před 8 lety

      Regardless, people still call RCAs "phono". Really common in Europe, for e.g. Argue all you'd like about the origin of the word, and whether it's appropriate. It's vernacular. Etymology seems to have little regard for literal accuracy.
      Maybe in the video he verbally mixed up 1/4" and RCA. Wouldn't surprise me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, there.

      I'm not arguing about anything. All I did was said, constructively, to a technical guy, on a technical and educational channel, that the term phono is technically incorrect. Which it is. Take it or leave it. Every comment after that was other people arguing.

    Though the TIs aren't the best graphing calculators in the world the were the standard school room calculators here in the US due to a deal they had with most high school and colleges in the 90s and early 00s.

    Dave last i knew Victorinox and Wenger were owned by same family they just merged the too companies into one which is Victorinox today. Speaking of Swiss Knives I got an old Wenger my grandfather gave me he bought back in 1976 and its still works great to this day. Cant beat Swiss build quality.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict Před 8 lety

      They work out to 20 USD for the LCD screen version and 40 USD for the LED screen version. But other than that and a different interface, they're basically identical and both include cameras. The cheapest non-branded bluetooth companion watch is the equivalent of 10 USD but doesn't include a camera.
