Drax Power Station and BECCS - Biomass Myth Busting

  • Biofuelwatch campaign assistant Dorian Wainwright breaks down some of the most common myths about bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (aka BECCS), giving particular attention to the claims and ambitions of British biomass-burning power plant Drax.
Burning biomass for power makes climate change worse, harms biodiversity, pollutes the air we breathe, harms communities and wastes money on a false solution to climate change, and BECCS makes all of that much, much worse.
We mustn't make the same mistake we made when it came to CCS from coal burning, and invest billions in resources over many years chasing a false climate solution - particularly when that time and money can be better invested into genuine solutions which are available right now.

Burning trees is the dumbest solution against burning coal.

Why? You can grow more trees but not coal. Also, the emissions of wood/peat power plants are significantly lower than coal plants

@@rostokrangers3327 wrong, carbon emissions from burning trees is 3 to 4 times higher than coal and while destroying sinks.

@@stewartread4235 depends a lot on the type of wood, some are better and some worse And also most toxic gases are filtered out of the flue, in coal and biomass plants

No, actually carbon emissions from wood (or peat) power plants are at least as high as those from coal plants (per unit of energy). Trees take many decades to grow to sequester the carbon emitted by cutting down and burning other trees, decades we don't have if we want any change of limiting warming to 1.5 or even 2 degrees.

Isn't the point of BECCS first to grow the biomass (which is how the CO2 is removed from the atmosphere) and then burn it, releasing energy and CO2 for storage.
The advantage over DACCS (taking the CO2 directly from the air) is said to be that the CO2 concentration is much higher in BECCS making it a lot easier to capture.

Wow - this has changed my view of Drax completely.

Not sure where you get your figures from. We get ours from the UK Government's Digest of UK Energy Statistics and from Drax's Annual report.

I visited Drax, walked around the coal crushers and the furnace , the six hydrogen cooled 600MW , i kissed one of them. It was quiet.. Yes of course absurd buyring co2, , dont generate it . Swindon Honda factory could make wind turbines
