Cameras that have built in microphone have a phono connectors through which you can pick the audio and feed into the DVR. The DVR also has a phono connector "audio in" through which you can feed audio into the DVR

I prefer NVR to DVR because DVR requires cumbersome wiring using bulky coaxial cable + power cable whiles NVR uses just a single network cable which carries both video and power. The wiring process for DVR is also quite complex and I find NVR wiring much easier.
