  • I look at the medical accuracy of the TV show Scrubs. Is it like real life? How JD's first day compares to my first day as a real doctor in episode 1 of Scrubs.
Its been fun revisiting Scrubs, House MD and discovering The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident and ER!

While you're right about the "throw them in the patients mouth" dosage, the point was that JD was afraid to just look up the dosage and assign it without having to check with Cox, thus his (always amusing) rant about "it's just aspirin!".
Scrubs has a lot of great moments, and a lot of sad moments. They really knew how to make you like a character before they killed them off in cold blood.

Yeah actually I had a similar idea not that long ago. And as for an episode he should do maybe he can do the Series 3 episode "Smith and Jones" (with the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones) because it's one of the only New Who episodes that takes place in a hospital. And I also thought he should talk about the fact that real scientists have tried or already tried to make real "Sonic Screwdrivers" for the medical field. But yeah I would LOVE to see him do this!

Totally agree with your assessment of Scrubs. My kids always asked me which show was the most accurate and I always said Scrubs. It does a great job of showing what it's like to be a resident (junior doctor) and how doctor's really act and what they talk about behind the scenes. And the relationships between the doctors and nurses was also the most accurate - NEVER piss off a nurse, if you treat them well they'll go out of their way to help you but if you piss them off God have mercy on your soul. And.i always loved doctor Cox - I had a lot of attending physicians like Dr Cox. In the beginning they intimidate the hell out of you and then you get to know them and you start to learn from them and respect them. But you never respect the tools 😉

    • @erinwallace5644
      @erinwallace5644 Před 6 lety +7

One more thing - there's a great deal of competition in US training programs. If you want to be a specialist you have to impress the doctors that run the program that you are interested in so that they will accept you to their residency training program. And it can be really cut throat among the surgical specialties, especially orthopedics. General pediatrics isn't that competitive except that you want to impress your attendings and if you are interested in being chief resident you really have to shine. Also some physicians go on to do fellowships once they graduate residency and they can be quite competitive to get into depending on the specialty.

I've often felt that MDs who treat nursing staff poorly are just trying to develop a reputation to avoid getting paged, at the patient's expense of course.

  • @soonny002

By far, the most important tip I learned as a junior doctor, was to make alliances with NURSES! Nurses can either make or break your day. They'll either cover up some of your mistakes or embarrass you in front of everybody during ward rounds. And if they really hate you, they'll page you to come back from home to clean up your mess. Those were the days...

I work in patient transport at my hospital. The one most important thing I’ve so far is: keep the nurses happy. They are more willing to help if they know that you respect them and are there to help them. I love all our nurses and clinical techs. Not sure where we’d be without them.

Veterinarian here. During clinical year as a vet student I will never forget this quote from Dr. Cox. I had just come off of one of the harder rotations and had a lot of patients get euthanized or die under our care. "Everything we do is just a stall." His point was sometimes losing patients is not in our hands and while it is a bit dark I also find it somewhat comforting.

From an old and decrepit doctor: Excellent analysis. The paracentesis scene also shows the difference between surgeons and medics in that, while JD is is hesitating, Turk just grabs the chance to do an interventional procedure. Surgeons need to be proactive (? aggressive) even from their training period. I have seen most of the medical shows. Scrubs is the show which keeps the things mostly funny without getting too complicated on medical side. It does not get repetitive, unlike some other show I can mention. You gained a sub and keep up the good work ( both as a doc and youtuber).

Scrubs was and still is to this day my absolutely favourite show and made me want to be a doctor all through my childhood. I eventually decided to study biology/genetics (because I realised that almost throwing up at the sight of blood isn’t the best issue to have for a future doctor) but I still love the show and couldn’t wait for you to tell us how accurate it is.

I can empathize so much with some of the experiences you talk about, as well the feelings the show displays about that first day on the job and just feeling nervous and vulnerable as hell. And it doesn't matter what else you've done in your life or what experiences you've had, either, you still feel that way. Especially with doing procedures for the first tie. (Or first hundred times or so, as the case may be.)
One of the guys in my class of students was a former Army sergeant who'd been in the military for something like 12-15 years, been to war in all kinds of shitty situations, he and the guys from his squad would collect their own blood so they could do autotransfusions if need be, but put him in a position where he'd have to draw blood from someone else and those nervous hand jitters would start as adrenaline kicked in and the stress of messing up starts getting to you.
Someone else I went to school with used to do maintenance on the Navy's mines, floating underwater opening them up, knowing a single wrong move and shed be dead. And yet when it came time to do the internship, she literally said at one point "War was easy. THIS SHIT is hard."

Speaking for 'older' patients - read 'mid 30's' - we do sometimes get that jarring feeling that something is wrong with time when the doctor flipping through our charts is clearly 10 years younger than we are. Or possibly actually a medical student. A first year. Maybe a work experience kid. *HOW ARE THEY SO YOUNG..... OH GOD WHEN DID I GET OLD?*

The good news is that medical students can't write orders and the nurses will not waste their time paging them about you. So if they're students you can rest assured that an actual, qualified MD is looking over their shoulder and approving all their work.

and my favorite scrubs moment was the finale, the last 10 minutes. After watching the entire show, seeing all of the characters again as he walks that hall, gets me everytime. Not to mention the final montage. Every single time .....even though i've seen it hundreds of times over the last 8 years (may be an exaggeration, but not as much as you may think)

Just FYI, nurses are often the ones who do this. At least in Canada, RNs can pronounce death and they will be the ones to do so in most cases (if the patient has a do-not-resuscitate order) and inform the family, etc.. Nurses will also be the ones who will be with patients who are waiting to die over the course of days or weeks, and who will finally confirm death and say their condolences to family members they've been sharing this experience with.

"Scrubs" and "The Office" are my two favorite shows of all time, mainly, I think, because they hold a candle to how real the shows are to actual real life. I've also heard that "Scrubs" is the most accurate medical show on television, ever. That's pretty crazy, considering Bill Lawerence made "Spin City" as well, but it is what it is and "Scrubs" surpassed "The Office" as my favorite show of all time a long time ago. I go to sleep watching "Scrubs", almost every night.

Lara Marie Narvios I have watched it a couple of times (because I’ve watched it all way too many times) and have decided it would have worked if they made Denise the main character because JD is funny because he kind of acts like a quirky girl so having the main character be a quirky girl acting girly wasn’t funny. Denise was a girl acting like a dude which had its moments of being funny. If they had explored that it might have worked. That being said...it still wouldn’t be amazing but MUCH better than the intern they chose to be the one whose voice you hear.

Love your videos. I work in Canada as a Medical Services Aid, I handle supplies, some portering, running labs and supplies during codes, clerical work, non medical work on the unit. I find it strange to see doctors doing procedures like IV's, catheters, EKG's, blood work, etc they are done by nurses or technicians here. Is it different in the UK? Also you are so right about how quickly you have to move on from tragedy and what it does to you. Scrubs did a great episode about it. Dr Cox shows another doc telling a family that their love one has died. He makes the point that no one else in that room will be going back to work that day, but the doctor will get back to his shift. I remember working in Labour and Delivery and another MSA came in to have her baby, we had known each other for years and her baby was born with cranial stenosis and nearly died, they rushed her to the NICU where she was ventilated. I had to go set up the birthing room next to hers. I could hear her sobbing. Happy news she just turned 5 two days ago.
