I found this song when I was deep in the throes of my pain over a breakup, and the words "what am I supposed to do now, without you" felt like a proverbial kick in the stomach. What, indeed, was I supposed to do now, without him? I honestly did not know. He was a constant in my life for five years. How could a constant change? How could a constant go away? I kept trucking on, even through my tears. I just carried on. I knew there was no other way around it. I cried, but I continued walking. And today, almost three years to the day since the relationship crumbled, this song still shoots arrows at my heart when I recall the anguish I was in when I first heard it. And while I still don't have a definite answer to the question "what am I supposed to do now, without you?" I do know one thing - Everything passes. Emotions, feelings, pain, hardship. They pass. If you're reading this and you happen to be sad right now, I know it's hard right now, I know it seems impossible right now. But believe me, this feeling is just a moment in time. It's hard to believe it right now, but, trust me. It's not permanent. You WILL figure it out. In the meantime, cry it out. Feel your feelings. Put this song on repeat. Do what you need to do. I promise you, one day you will be okay. You will laugh again. You will love again.
It’s a beautiful song. It’s the beauty of heartbreak. Loving once is worth it. Even the pain is worth it. Don’t look passed the beauty of your pain. And yes, life does go on, and we grow stronger and better.
He was a fool to let you go. Anyone who composed such heart felt sentiment is a soul mate not an after thought. You deserve someone who knows you body and soul
It's completely nuts how good this is. Great things happened back in the day, yes. But they are still happening if you know where to look. Or rather, if you frequent places where greatness is likely to find you.
These guys, The Punch Brothers, Sufjan Stevens. If you like rap, Kendrick Lamar. Even this band of guys from my high school is pretty great-More Fatter. Check the song The Owl.
Agreed, I caught these gentleman on PBS the other evening and was mesmerized as their beautiful voices and sweet guitar work soothed my old soul and brought me back to a better day, Bella!! Thank you young men!
@@uzefulidiot yeah their electric guitars had pretty much gone to shit up until recently, but they always made some of the greatest acoustic guitars in the Montana factory.
I was at this show, had no idea who they were when I went. On top of being awesome musicians, they were so funny in between songs. They had the audience cracking up with their banter between one another. These guys are great, see em if you whenever you get a chance.
Same almost. Skipping channels one night until I came across this show. Within 10 mins, i went from not knowing who they were to them being one of my favorites. It's rare I find a group that exhibits such passion like these two.
The clouds move over Pontiac skies Their silent thunder matches mine I know this feeling from long ago I wondered was it gone, but now I know So when she calls, don't send her my way When it hurts, you'll know it's the right thing Michigan's in the rear-view now Keep your hands, where I could see 'em It took the words right out my mouth When you knew that I would need 'em What am I supposed to do now? Without you Without you It's unannounced, like you'd expect it I'm on broke down brake lines and Motown records And all that's left is a blind reflection But you know what's coming and you regret it So when she calls, don't send her my way When it hurts most it's the right thing Michigan's in the rear-view now Keep your hands, where I could see 'em It took the words right out my mouth When you knew that I would need 'em What am I supposed to do now? Without you Without you Michigan's in the rear-view now Keep your hands, where I could see 'em You took the words right out my mouth When you knew that I would need 'em What am I supposed to do now? Without you Without you
Pure beauty, recorded the only way acoustic music should be, through a great microphone, not plugged into the PA! These guys really get it: the quiet dynamics of the song, the guitars weaving parts around each other, and those gorgeous close harmonies. Amazing!
the mic is definitely hooked up to the PA. And if you mean as opposed to the guitars being plugged straight into a PA, almost nobody does that. Almost always the instruments are run through their own amplification system with their pedals and effects, etc, then fed to the PA.
Man there is two songs of theirs I know one is Graceland is a ghost town tonight and the other is this one. Both songs are some of the most beautiful pieces of musicianship Ive had the pleasure of hearing but I'd have to say Michigan is one song I've listened to while driving truck being on the road and dealing with some very tough matters of the heart and has become a def hands down top 5 on my all time personal fav play list..
I listened to this religiously when I got cheated on in 2016. Went on a trip on my own to LA and always played this over there. I listened to it about a year later and it ruined me emotionally. Here I am in 2020 absolutely loving it. Strange how emotion can play into music like this does for me. Still brings up a lot of sadness but also glad I went through what I did, to appreciate what I have now and how far I've come.
I grew up in Michigan and continuously grew further from it. Even after living in the most beautiful places in the world, Michigan is constantly the backbone of my origin and somewhere that I gravitate towards. It’s a state of constant heartbreak and gratitude
Between the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions having the years they deserve. I decided to revisit this song. Haunting. Beautiful. Go Michigan. (From Washington)
+Noah McDaniel I think you're referring to Kenneth ... Joey plays more rhythm (he's playing the Gibson J-45). Kenneth plays the Martin with the handkerchief.
Continuo com minha tese, o mundo está louco, como uma obra prima dessas há 9 anos só tem a miserável quantia de 500 mil visualizações? Merecemos a Mer** das músicas que temos que engolir
I trained in fort hood for a few weeks and stayed with my buddy. I wasn’t doing well, and I knew my friend could help me. I did my PT at night and got strong. Then I got smart on accident, and learned to keep my eyes peeled. I had enough southwest points to fly my love out to Austin. I’ll never forget the moment I got to hold her in my arms again in the city of music. Stay Beautiful Austin ❤️ Lucy Alice Nox
Just bumped into these guys on NPR the other day. Great harmonies, arpeggio pickin' in the tradition of Simon & Garfunkel, Spencer Davis & Peter Jameson
This was the one song my mom requested before she passed. At her funeral she requested it again, and then when my neighbor died she also was like "hey that is really good please play at my funeral." Same for my dog. Like all people who are about to die or already died too. Yep. True story.
Love these guys. Been listening to them since before they joined up. Seen them a few times live. Best one was at the club Cafe in Pittsburgh 5 years ago or so. Maybe 20 people in the audience. After the show they came and hung out in the bar and shot the chit for a couple hours with anyone who wanted to chat. It was very cool. Just saw they were interviewed by CBS morning news this past weekend. Making the rounds on national now. Great for them. Knew they were something special back in 2010. 👍👍
I watched " promised Land the other night and had to find out who was singing. The music was breathtaking. You are now my favorite group. Your voices blend perfectly together.
california. the NEW Laurel Canyon sound if you want to call it that. I found them watching the Inside Llewyn Davis showcase that T-Bone put on for Showtime. These guys are crazy talented. If you these guys, Check out Mandolin Orange, and The David Mayfield Parade.
absolutely awesome! I'd never heard of these guys until someone commented on my youtube video singing twilight by the band , the person said I'd be good with the milk carton kids , so I checked them out and was blown away ! Firstly that they rated me with them, and secondly how beautiful the sound. my favourite band now 😊
I love the story that they both were struggling solo artists who somehow just "clicked" when putting their voices together and have skyrocketed ever since. Love these dudes!
Amazing performances by these two. Was given one of those mics a few months ago. Had no idea what it was.. I surely do now.. Ear Trumpet Labs "Edwina". :)
This is beautiful. The guitar and the overall vibe sounds very Dave Rawlins/Gillian Welch. CZcams algo feeling it, too, knuckleball catcher being the second option in my feed on the right.
I saw them in concert with Sarah Jarosz last year, all on stage together. It was like listening to velvet!! These two are amazingly talented performers and songwriters. I hope they go far...they deserve it.
As much as I love the name "The Milk Carton Kids"... I also enjoy the name "Two Guys One Mic". Joey and Kenneth, please take this into consideration maybe when naming your next album if you're reading this. You know it is the right thing to do. Keep doing what you do. I love you guys.
Hell on Wheels, Season 1: Episode 8, led me here. I hit on this video after Gillian Welch; Annabelle....which was on Hell on Wheels, Season 1: Episode 8! Damn good music on Hell on Wheels, the guitar 🎸 sounded similar to the guy in this group. His guitar skills are AMAZING! And Longmire, I LOVE that show!! ❤❤❤
Dude flat out makes love to his guitar, and it's stupendous.

Beautifully worded.
Rita McNeil’s Flying On Your Own is a helpful song in such a situation.
these guys are so in sync it's beyond beautiful
It's completely nuts how good this is. Great things happened back in the day, yes. But they are still happening if you know where to look. Or rather, if you frequent places where greatness is likely to find you.
+Steve X Well F-ing said!

You have to look harder now to find good stuff like this, but it's out there. Gotta dig!!
Nicely put my good man.
These guys, The Punch Brothers, Sufjan Stevens. If you like rap, Kendrick Lamar.
Even this band of guys from my high school is pretty great-More Fatter. Check the song The Owl.
Still love this song to this day! Such amazing voices and guitar. Never gets old
A song I found just now. That I've listened to at least 150 times. Holy grail.
These guys are insanely talented
Those who still use the term retarded must be just that
Unbelievable harmonies. Some of the nuances in the delivery of those lyrics made me well up, made my jaw drop and my eyes widen.
Absolute perfection.
about as organic as it gets - nice to see this kind of art still exists
Agreed, I caught these gentleman on PBS the other evening and was mesmerized as their beautiful voices and sweet guitar work soothed my old soul and brought me back to a better day, Bella!! Thank you young men!
these guys have spent thousands of hours together doing this. man do I feel lucky to hear it.
yay for all-mahogany Martins
I agree
True, and the Gibson aint no slouch either :-)
Eric Fricke ‘47 017 in my kit
Yay, and nylon-stringed ones.
@@uzefulidiot yeah their electric guitars had pretty much gone to shit up until recently, but they always made some of the greatest acoustic guitars in the Montana factory.
Their voices sound like caresses to my soul. So sweet...
I was at this show, had no idea who they were when I went. On top of being awesome musicians, they were so funny in between songs. They had the audience cracking up with their banter between one another. These guys are great, see em if you whenever you get a chance.
+Rick Gauthier they want 60 dollars at least though :(
+Casey Beck They could charge 120 and I'd still go to their show.. So talented and worth every penny.
Same almost. Skipping channels one night until I came across this show. Within 10 mins, i went from not knowing who they were to them being one of my favorites. It's rare I find a group that exhibits such passion like these two.
I saw them at the Ann Arbor Folk Fest a few years ago.......and they didn't get to play long enough in my opinion. They are GREAT!!!
Their obvious passion for music is inspiring.
These dudes are even better live! My favourite song right here!
Saw them live, was unforgettable, they held the audience spellbound.
Love these guys - two guitars, two voices, one mic. So simple and beautiful.
If one needs a sense that 2021 will be a better year, I just discovered these guys--so it is better.
Utterly stunning how good this sounds live
love this song. almost in tears. just when I needed it ! live short love long!!!
Will always love the guitar tone. So unique and expressive.
I seen these guys by accident and I am a big fan because of it
how does this not have more views? incredible performance
Two guys, two guitars, one mic. Flawless and just how it should be. Might be one of the prettiest sad songs I've ever heard.
I can't get enough of their music! Incredible work!
Incredibly beautiful. I will be seeking tickets. Wow. I haven't heard anything I've liked as much since I saw Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's.
Sam Lester - Gordon went down on the Fitzgerald to play with Davey Jones
The clouds move over Pontiac skies
Their silent thunder matches mine
I know this feeling from long ago
I wondered was it gone, but now I know
So when she calls, don't send her my way
When it hurts, you'll know it's the right thing
Michigan's in the rear-view now
Keep your hands, where I could see 'em
It took the words right out my mouth
When you knew that I would need 'em
What am I supposed to do now?
Without you
Without you
It's unannounced, like you'd expect it
I'm on broke down brake lines and Motown records
And all that's left is a blind reflection
But you know what's coming and you regret it
So when she calls, don't send her my way
When it hurts most it's the right thing
Michigan's in the rear-view now
Keep your hands, where I could see 'em
It took the words right out my mouth
When you knew that I would need 'em
What am I supposed to do now?
Without you
Without you
Michigan's in the rear-view now
Keep your hands, where I could see 'em
You took the words right out my mouth
When you knew that I would need 'em
What am I supposed to do now?
Without you
Without you
This is my favorite version of this song they've done... I think it's their best because they really take their time with it... so great.
AWESOME musicians. Very cool guys and very talented. A joy to listen to :)

Yeah, I understand all that...I just worded my comment badly! I meant purely acoustic guitars played into a mic, no on-board pickups.
Ridiculously amazing...
ridiculously gay like my brother bilo
Man there is two songs of theirs I know one is Graceland is a ghost town tonight and the other is this one. Those harmonies are so soulful. Amazing song
Tone is unbelievable... this performance is just too good.
My heart can hardly handle this.
I listened to this religiously when I got cheated on in 2016. Went on a trip on my own to LA and always played this over there. I listened to it about a year later and it ruined me emotionally. So beautiful - their music is restoring! Amazing musicians.
They’re quite simply extraordinarily talented.
I love their sound. Simple and beautiful

Looking forward to seeing the guys in Glasgow for Celtic Connections. Real talent.
still gives me the chills!
It's been in my head for days. Beautiful.
Love discovering new artists 😊👏❤️
I can't believe I'm finding this song now it's like finding a diamond in the dust
who’s here in 2020/2021🥺✨
Heard this band today on NPR. You guys rock!!!
Boy are they great!!!
Who else still watching in 2021
If you think about it, this song is not about what it appears to be about. Took me a long time to realize that. Beautifully written and performed.
Joey is one of the best guitarists out there. Truly a legendary talent.
+Noah McDaniel
I think you're referring to Kenneth ... Joey plays more rhythm (he's playing the Gibson J-45). Kenneth plays the Martin with the handkerchief.
Or are you referring to the joke?
He and David Rawlings…
Soooo good and my favorite of their songs.

saw them last night in Toronto....amazing show

Wow! That was beautiful!
Mesmerizing & Awesome 🎉🎉🎉👍
I have to agree steve x it is insanely beautiful
I heard this song on “Longmire”. Beautiful!!
Just flat awesome!! plain N simple!!
My god so underrated.
Music. This song could be in any genre.
Pure talent.
It's like 2 majestic beasts frolicking in the woods of some heavenly world weaving in and out of the trees.
Definitely some Gillian Welch / Dave Rawlings inspiration here (also Simon & Garfunkel) - very nice.
+Jayme Edwards Came here hoping someone heard and saw what I did. Even moves with his guitar like Dave! Love these guys and DRM!
Jayme Edwards I actually heard this song in passing, and thought it was David rawlings on guitar, that's how I discovered this gem
That dude has to have studied Dave Rawlings so hard it’s so clear!
I was thinking exactly the same thing with the Dave Rawlings dissonance and more obviously to most the Simon and Garfunkul.
Even his hands resemble Rawlings' hands!
This was the one song my mom requested before she passed. At her funeral she requested it again, and then when my neighbor died she also was like "hey that is really good please play at my funeral." Same for my dog. Like all people who are about to die or already died too. Yep. True story.
Haunting
Hauntingly beautiful! 🙏
Holy crap this is good.
I can't wait to see these guy's along side my Beautiful Wife in Houston on May 29th
YES SHE DOES, VERY:P

No way Austin City limits, you've just extended Austin all the way to Berlin. Thanks.

Nash 40 David Mayfield Parade is one of my favorites as well!
absolutely awesome! Firstly that they rated me with them, and secondly how beautiful the sound. my favourite band now 😊
I love this song
Their melody and pitches are so on point they it looks like they're pretending to play and lip syncing.
I love the story that they both were struggling solo artists who somehow just "clicked" when putting their voices together and have skyrocketed ever since. Love these dudes!
one thing people tend to forget about music is that it is supposed to touch the soul. If you can't feel this brilliance you do not have one.
I've listened to about 8 of their songs. They are all pretty much the same. Not much brilliance in recycling the same thing over and over.
Bob Beller dude -- you are soooooooo wrong
boy do i get tired of people telling me how to react to something
Amazing performances by these two. Was given one of those mics a few months ago. Had no idea what it was.. I surely do now.. Ear Trumpet Labs "Edwina". :)
Brian White .... Proof that a microphone can be a musical instrument in its own right when the quality is beyond superior.
This is beautiful. The guitar and the overall vibe sounds very Dave Rawlins/Gillian Welch. CZcams algo feeling it, too, knuckleball catcher being the second option in my feed on the right.
I love harmony
PHENOMENAL ❤❤❤❤
WOW WOW WOW... bravo ! tellement beau leur style de musique.
Brilliant.
what are the chances that these are the children of john lennon and paul mccartney i cant be the only one to see this resemblance... also amazing song
I thought of James spader younger. Heheh
Amen to that! Sam my god! you talk about touching! the soul! these boys! are just plain! Lennon N McCartney! looks talent! and voices!
+Sam Stubenhaus My brother and I were thinking Jackson Browne and Paul Simons kids lol
Exactly.... First thing I noticed!!
Looks yes...sound? I dont see McCartney or Lennon in their sound
Real Dave Rawlings guitar vibes
So glad I got to see these guys perform at The Kessler theater in Big-D. I never will be the same ! Happy for their success.
possibly the best song ever.
These guys get it, like i mean, they really get it.
I saw them in concert with Sarah Jarosz last year, all on stage together. It was like listening to velvet!! These two are amazingly talented performers and songwriters. I hope they go far...they deserve it.
Fantastic stuff
I'm slightly obsessed with this song right now
True talent.
I'm just so curious what the thought process was behind the few people who disliked this video. This is unbelievable.
So good to see this, especially in these days of (c)rap music.
Music isn't dead after all...
As much as I love the name "The Milk Carton Kids"... I also enjoy the name "Two Guys One Mic". Joey and Kenneth, please take this into consideration maybe when naming your next album if you're reading this. You know it is the right thing to do. Keep doing what you do. I love you guys.
