Many years ago I took a train from Amsterdam to Cologne. It was new year Eve 1994. I got off the train around 23:50 (11:50pm) and my eyes were mesmerized on this beautiful building. When midnight struck the sky lit up with fireworks behind the cathedral. It was completely organic. I ended up sleeping on a park bench near the Rhine taking my eyes off the cathedral just to sleep. It’s a thing of beauty.
There is not Cathedral as beautiful as this - beautiful testimonial to the German people.
I used to visited every Friday to this amazing and sacred Catedral when i lived there. So beautiful ! Masterpiece !

The video says the cathedral survived WWII, that's correct, but it's actually a bit of a miracle itself as it was hit about 70 times by bombs during the war and suffered from fires caused by firebombs. The northern tower nearly collapsed in 1943 and the whole that was caused by a bomb was quickly filled. This improvisational filling remained until 2004/2005 when it was partly removed and is now hidden behind the sandstone fassade.
Well...some of the pilots also tried not to hit the cathedral as they could use it as a landmark, considering the size of the twin spires.

Fun fact: The stones from Cologne Cathedral are so old that you have to exchange them. (After all, it is the oldest building in the world) And when you have exchanged all the stones then the stones at the beginning are too old! The cathedral will never be completely finished!
The problem is, that the cathedral consists of 8 different kinds of stone.
It isn’t though. What about the colosseum or the pyramids and so on. Except of course these are considered structures and not buildings
I was there and only a corner was hit and brick up on the left side when looking at the front of the church . Was a marvel to visit it

The square in front of the cathedral was the site of a famous tank battle between a M26 Pershing and a Panther Tank.

A captivating building. Haunting really. Once you see it you can never forget it. I saw it a half a dozen times in my 7 years in Germany. Hard to wrap your mind around the effort it took to create that place.

FYI The attendance is great!!!! And whom says you must be a catholic to pray in a church or cathederal, its for all christians! Then also, if you have not been there and havent seen the Cathederal, then you have absolutely no imagination of the size inside, its says so in the video, though...its amazing and awesome!!!!

Yeah...they could have done better with their money than pixelated glass. No one wants to make anything beautiful anymore. Although...considering the architectural eyesore that is Cologne...I can't say I'm surprised.
