- Andy Lau at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival for his In Conversation with... discussion with Jennifer Hsiung.
The star of Ning Hao’s The Movie Emperor, Andy Lau has been a leading figure in Asian cinema for the past four decades. Like many of his contemporaries, Lau started out in the early 1980s as an actor for Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), Hong Kong’s premier television network. He landed his first feature film role in Ann Hui’s Boat People (1982), a central work of the Hong Kong New Wave.
In the late 1980s, Lau fully transitioned to working in film and enthralled audiences and critics alike in Wong Kar Wai’s As Tears Go By (1988) and Days of Being Wild (1990). Lau launched his own production company in the early 1990s and has starred in over 160 feature films, including Johnnie To’s relentless police thriller Running Out of Time (1999), Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s twisty and unpredictable Infernal Affairs (2002) and Infernal Affairs III (2003), Zhang Yimou’s martial arts extravaganza House of Flying Daggers (2004), Tsui Hark’s delirious fantasy whodunit Detective Dee: The Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010), Hui’s grounded drama A Simple Life (2011), and Frant Gwo’s mega-action blockbuster The Wandering Earth 2 (2023).
A natural entertainer and multi-faceted artist, Lau has won three Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor, received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 2006 Busan International Film Festival, and holds the Guinness World Record for “Most Awards Won by a Cantopop Male Artist.” He joins us for an in-depth conversation about his storied career as an actor, producer, and celebrated Cantopop singer-songwriter, as well as his new film The Movie Emperor, which is a Gala Presentation at this year’s Festival.

Damn he doesn't look much older than when I first saw his film in the 80s 😮 Andy is truly a gentleman; great manner and so poised. The translators did a great job also
Yes agree ❤❤
Being you fan since i was 8 years old until now. So proud having a person like you become my favorite person in my life. Thank you Andy Lau. Always healthy and keep creating beautiful art. Thanks.
He's a very down-to-earth artist, humble, sincere, kind, and very hardworking. I like him a lot especially the kind person that he is - an epitome to many people and new artists.
I agreed, very true!
I admire Andy Lau for his personality, sincere character & commitment in his work. Not many actor like him nowadays. Wishing all the best!
Ah, if only you lived in HK and know what some insiders in the local entertainment circle thinks of his “sincerity”. Hint: it’s all super well choreographed.
@@kindface it is a hoax?
I don't think Andy Lau has ever given a bad performance. The guy is a professional and loves his job
He had plenty, you not looking hard enough
He didn’t do well when he first hit stardom. A lot of failed investment led to him working in a lot of movies. A lot of bad ones. But it helped to pay the bills and continue to work til now. Plus his music being one of the Four Kings of canto pop in the 90s. He worked hard to get out of the hole.
@@TheTraveler2222he’s doesn’t.
@@excalipoorhe’s been an A list since the 80s
@@TheTraveler2222 bad movies as he went broke at one point and needed to make any movie available to repay his debt.
I remember meeting Andy 20 years ago in NYC when he was here to premiere his new film. I was one of his bodyguards.
Cool, How was he?
I’d love to see a Netflix about Andy Lau ❤
The translators did a really great job. As someone who can understand Mandarin all I could do is just be patient and wait for the translator to finish because i want to hear what he's gonna say next, LOL!!!!!
Yes I agree! Not easy to translate so fast ❤❤
My favorite actor Andy L. and love all the movies he has been in since 1985😍💕
Then later all his song❤

I love you, Andy Lau. I admire your creativity in acting, unique and inspiring… there will never be another Andy Lau ❤😊
It's Andy Lau.
Doesn't matter what he speaks, he is still a legend!
Thank u for posting really want a watch it
Such a random to have CZcams recommended for this clip so can be able to hear and see Mr. Lau for the first time (outside the movie) 😊 Growing up with his movie since 80s in TVB series, then the Gamble God series, then Internal Affairs and The World without thieves and so on.😍 One of the biggest movie star in Asia and globally with me. 👍 Respectfully from the Vietnamese fan!👏 Thanks Andy for such an amazing work till now.
He's the definition of an icon!
finally i gets to see Andy Lau‘s in conversation
I used to go to high school with the interviewer. We were like the top students in art class and our teacher would always have me and Jen sit in the front. I always wanted to stay a low profile and sit in the back. Woulda loved to be at the event but i was in Hong Kong at the time and couldn't attend.
Big Andy Lau fan he is a movie legend
Love Andy Lau, very respectable, humble, gentle and polite movie super star!
Woww… a great great actor from the beginning of his career until now. My all-time favourite actor and singer. He has a down-to-earth personality and still looking good at his age now. Thumbs up.. 👍❤️
What an actor !!! He is iconic of Hong Kong Cinema.
The translators did a great job.

I am so surprised that this was recommended to me. As someone, who was born in Guangzhou and lived there until I was 6 years old, Andy Lau was part of my childhood. He is a legend in the Cantonese-speaking area. I mean he is one of the four legends or the literal translation would be the four heavenly kings of Canto-Pop. It is really great to see him being honoured like this.
Loves loves loves all your movies and songs !! 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✊✊✊
Thank you for posting it. I wanted to be here but couldn't. Also, 1:12:07 this man has been saying he'd be back for another concert since his last concert in........ 2003. I've been saving my money since then 😒🤣
Love this guy so much!!! He’s a good role model for new actors.
I've been waiting for this video for a long time🤣

Andy Lau, he is such a perfect artiste. He is incredibly well-liked by fans, fellow actors and industry colleagues alike. His star appeal never wavers. A true star across the generations... imagine being at the pinnacle of his industry for 44 years and counting... truly amazing
I hope he spoken Cantonese, his native language.
He is a bloody legend, his voice when he sings give me chill everytime
The translator did an outstanding job. 👏
finally, thanks
Great fun entertaining translations! It's awesome to see translator's interaction 😊
We love Andy Lau! Please come to California ❤️
I'm surprise he's not speaking Cantonese. I remember him a lot in HK films when I was a kid.
Communists took over Hong Kong, he betters speaks Mandarin…if not, you know what will happen to him then?….
@@kevinng1702 there are Cantonese speakers in Mainland China. I don't think he will be disappeared for speaking Cantonese. But yea, screw the CCP
Andy Lau uesd to speak English fluently . I think he don't speak English in this event because China is in the period of extreme nationalism at the moment. Hong Kong artist like Leo Lai and Eason Chan their first language Cantonese in live event were requested to speak Mandarins. I think Andy is afraid he would be canceled by Chinese trolls as traitor if he speak English.😅
@@kevinng1702 100 million Cantonese speak Cantonese in their lives. What happened on them? Nothing
@@user-LP3 you know that Chinese communist killed over 100 million Chinese people right? You better know that…if not, go and read the history again…good luck…
How can he said he started by shooting movies? He started with TVB and shot a lot of TV dramas especially kongfu Wuxia TV dramas. He had been gaining his fame through TV dramas all the way through 1986. Many have become HK classics. Maybe he didn't have a good relationship with TVB, he didn't want to "promote" TVB so to speak through his interview.
In 1983, Andy Lau, who was popular on TVB after starring in "The Legend of the Condor Heroes", was unwilling to sign a five-year contract extension because he firmly believed that his career would make a big leap in five years. Because TVB did not allow him to focus on acting in movies, he asked the company to shorten the term but was rejected. As a result, he angered the TVB executives and was put into hiding - he had no chance to film or appear in the news media. During this period, he also took the initiative to approach TVB executives several times, hoping to resolve the conflicts between himself and the company through negotiations, but the two parties never reached a consensus.
my one and only idol……..he exudes class!

Wow i grew up with his movies.
Wish they would had shown the movie they were showing in the interview
Speak Cantonese
I think he spoke Mandarin so that all Chinese audiences can understand even if they aren’t Cantonese.
It's nice to hear how humble he truly is
He speaks Chinese better so preferred to speak Chinese instead.
He spoke mandarin because the Chinese government have their target on him. Don’t get it twisted. If it’s was Tony Leung ( he would speak Cantonese or English ) he’s a real HK stars. He even thanks HK when winning award in Europe. This Andy lau even try to ignore the HK question and have nothing to say. Always praise china because otherwise he’s lose movies role
They have a interpreter right there
I was going to ask why he seems to only ever speak mandarin when he's native tongue is Cantonese
thumbs up for interpreter
love you ANDY!
Can’t believe he needed an interpreter behind him! Check out Tony Leung’s English when receiving his Golden Lion for Lifetime Achivement ! That’s international!
He can speak English. But he wants to speak Mandarin.
Orang yg sekolah di Hk, rata2 bs bahasa Inggris.
Andy L pasti bs, tp dia sengaja pakai Mandarin.
I ❤ you Andy Lau. East or West you are still the best
Andy Lau
Andy lau is the best❤❤❤❤
Legendary actor and singer
Why was Andy Lau answering in Mandarin and not his mother tongue, Cantonese? There was an English interpreter there anyway
I am so disappointed, too ! He not even willing talking about Hong Kong too !
@@vivianwong1814 come on , really ? who doesnt know he from hk
All the HK celebs are scared these days. The Northern Overlords' plan of gradually Mandarinizing everybody in Southern China has been working.

he put a lot of work into learning mandarin, speaks it nicely now
Is it easy for a Cantonese speaker to learn Mandarin? Are they similar? Does he have an accent?
@@annamuller6821 yes and no, it's easier but it also comes with a lot of baggage, same same but different
Phonetically it is another language. The vernacular is also very different. Hk uses traditional Chinese while
China use simplified Chinese. So pretty hard but also easier
@@christopherconcept926yes but it's not to do with script
wow
Always the main character. No matter what he does. A very admirable being.
looking so good for his age...
Thank goodness someone finally spoke to him in Cantonese!
Andy Lau ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A real super star !
Never realized that Andy Lau was a screenwriter and scriptwriter before he entered the TVB acting program
In cantonese please! And gosh, he is so handsome AND super talented
He is such a modest actor. He can speak English, but i guess he prefers to speak Mandarin so other mandarin fan speakers can understand.
what's wrong with him for not speaking Cantonese. 😢😮 He is not even good at Putonghua. forget his roots. 😮

Andy law plsss speaking
The last girl asking is skye Chan, also a former tvb artists
Andy made about 200 movies more than 90% played main characters. Beside Jackie Chan I can’t say anyone else more famous than him.
Probably Chow Yun Fat and Jet Li? Just a thought 😂😂😂
@@Hoo88846 in movie alone they might have but Andy Lau is more versatile and he’s done a lot more than both of them in entertainment industry.

Andy Lau is so patriotic that he speaks mandarin during the interview. He is proud to be Chinese. I love you Andy,
lmao absolutely not. A sellout northern muppet. Chow yun fat and Tony Leung still a proud hongkonger.
Say his name. It is still LAU TAK WAH Are you a Wumao ? Hmmmnn??
Yes, Andy Lau has always been proud to be Chinese. But what has China and CCP ever done for HK?
Guy has forgotten his roots. Doesn’t want to speak Cantonese in case he upsets the wumao. At least Tony Leung is real!!!!
He’s Hong Kong mate
he grew up during british hk , how come he need translator ?
I think it is more correct for what he wants to express
you kidding right ? most of them cant even speak proper english to have a conversation
Northern Overlords do not allow the Southern Chinese to speak other languages.
Maybe he expresses himself better when speaking in Mandarin / Cantonese although he could speak and understand English.
the interpreter did a splendid job here
I think he want to speak the language that as many people can understand as possible. It's not easy to make everyone happy😀
Mandarin is more universal than Cantonese; he was very thoughtful for rest of us. ❤ too bad I can't see the film clips too
