Piper aircraft is rebranding itself as the better alternative to training new pilots. A bit of history lesson, many pilots actually fly or train in a piper aircraft. Both Piper and Cessnas have been the go to airplane for many flight schools to train new students. But like anything in aviation, it gets expensive. And with the new trends in more modern alternatives in the light sport aircraft category, a lot of older manufacturers are looking to get a bite of the pie.
Piper 100i is here to get some of that pie of the pilot training market. Piper Aircraft made the announcement in December of last year that it has received type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the Pilot 100. The Pilot 100, which was announced during Sun-n-Fun in 2019, is the value priced addition to Piper’s trainer-class line. Following certification, Piper began deliveries to its launch customer, American Flyers, who will be taking delivery of eight (8) Pilot 100i aircraft by the end of 2020.
Here are the specs of the Piper 100i

128 ktas | 237 km/h Max Cruise Speed
1,608 ft |490 m Takeoff Distance*

More like a Piper Archer than a Piper Arrow I would say. The Arrow is retractable w/constant speed prop. This plane is basically an Archer with fixed gear, fixed prop, Lycoming 180HP.
Agree with Chris.
Yep. Spot on. It’s an Archer tailored for the school market.
I am glad it wasn’t just me.
Definitely an archer, not an arrow
Archer, Not Arrow. The Arrow has a retract landing gear. I wish you could have gotten over to the Archer next to the Piper Pilot 100i. Thank you for the review.
The prices of these planes are just ridiculous
And that's just to take her home...lol.
Yup. Not affordable at all.
That's like the cessna150 I saw on trade a plane. 9800+ hrs TT airframe, close to 1k hrs on the engine . Most of the nav
stuff , and asking 40k$ and this was a '69 model.
Owner has hypoxia😁
I thought it sounded very reasonable, remember its a business that air frame will make plenty of cash during its life time as a trainer, cheap when compared to say a Sirus sr22 !!! Just a thought why don't more plane manufacturers fit air frame parachutes ?
Considering this airframe first flew in 1960 both old Piper and New Piper have got a pretty good return out of the original R&D (32,700+ airframes sold). Apart from the tapered wing what real changes have there been since 1961? If it wasn't for the litigious nature of US society and therefore the need for very expensive product liability insurance this aircraft would be much less costly. There would be many new and more up to date airframes being designed/developed in the certified market.
'.....maybe when I get to 50 I'll be able to.....' HEY!!! I resemble that remark! Just turned 50 this year, and lemme tell ya, young man, if you think you'll be THAT debilitated at 50, you're in for a big surprise for what you'll still be able to do and things you'll able to do things you can't do now. Been following you since you were getting your PPL in Torrance! Keep up the great work Mike and congrats on the family on making your own career work for you.
I was so pleased that this airplane is also fit very nicely for very short pilots. I am 5’-4” short legged Japanese. The seats move so much forward that I even set one notch back off from the shortest set point.
That’s a nice trainer. Thanks for the information. The air show sounded pretty great!
Thanks for reviewing.
Student pilot here...Very Nice machine. I always like the Piper aircraft..Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the vids.
I love how with Piper you know there everything is before you even see it.
If it aint broke dont fix it
That’s definitely not an arrow, no constant speed prop or retract gear.
As a trainer, it would have been nice for Piper to add a G3X 7" vertical for the CFI....
I think the g1000 equipped TX will be a more popular option
VERY NICE!
You compare this with the Piper Arrow (which has retractable gear, constant speed prop). You say it has 180 hp, but say it is a IO-360. That would be a O-360, which is not fuel injected and is 180 hp. I don’t know what this really is.
hi mike i just want to see some cool pics of ur
plane!!
You should do a video on a kodiak 100 III!
i wish they made a new 150 in a 3 seater
This is the Cherokee 180 instead of the Archer. The Archer has wheel pants and slightly longer fuselage to the standard 180 model. Unfortunately, Piper did away with the baggage compartment door on the right side.
Here is my beef. I buy run out Cherokee 140/160s. I look for crap paint, avionics, interior and engines. I then replace all of the above. 90% of the time I’m at around 100-110k bucks. All in. It is a steep price. But when I’m done I have a plane that looks, smells, and flies like new. I now have 11 of them in lease backs making around 130% of the mortgage each month. All in southern or western states. Gotta love the year round weather there. They go as fast, feel the same, and maint wise are almost the same ast this new Piper 100i. I’m torn as to what the advantage is. My goal is 20 planes. At that number I can pay off a plane every few years and when ready sell them all. While I won’t get my money back I’ve Essentially not paid anything for them.
Is there an advantage to buying a plane like the 100i. I really feel there is not. EVEN when you factor in the spar AD there are so many that where never in flight schools and training environments that I don’t have to worry about that expense.
NICE!!!
You managed to turn a profitless business into something profitable. Nice work!
@@sleektruck22 sort of. Basically the profits are all kept in a account used specifically for maintaining them. Like any plane they will and always need some tlc every month. It’s a brake even deal until planes start getting paid off. Two of the schools flying four of the planes on average about 100-120 hours a month. So engines go quick.
You're on to something there. There are deals available on old Cherokees that make the project planes reasonably affordable. Plus they go about as fast as a 172 on less fuel (easier to maintain as well).
At least you get the whole plane written off and bonus depreciation.
Fully equipped, minus wheel pants. Considering a new 172 is over $400k, this is a bargain.
Nice
Modern and practical manual flaps and elevator trim. Thank You for the video, Mike. Nice to know this aircraft exist.
Guessing it will cost over $25/hr wet in block time. Back in the day that was my 150 cost.
Someone who professes to be a aircraft sales specialist should know that this pilot 200i is similar to a piper archer or warrior, and nor the Piper Arrow. The Arrow is a retractable gear complex aircraft, not a fixed gear, simple training aircraft.
It's the 100i.
@@peteranderson037 sorry, it was a typo.
This is a new piper cadet.
Just curious how is that an instrument trainer when I didn’t see a vor pack? Unless I missed something.
All glass now
I am 55 in a,week and I still don't need a wheel chair..must be doing well..ps I am flight training too I'd better hurry up 😁
Did he say when you get to 50?😂
I know 😏 but I'm almost fifty and I'll bet that Mic can't beat me in a 💯 meter dash 🙄 but I still love you Mic. 😄
Yep, he did. I rewound to listen again as I was surprised. At 58 I notice no difference in physical capability as compared to 25 or 30. "The arrogance of youth" is definitely a thing, lol.
It's nice clean and simple but that's steep for what it is you have a bigger nicer better equipped airplane for a lot less
What? Are you planning to physically fall apart at age 50? I'd go on, but I have to run and stop my 78-year-old friend from climbing into and out of his 1943 PT-17 Stearman - again!
It's a beautiful aircraft don't get me wrong but no steam gauges for backup God forbid if you have an electrical failure. And honestly I prefer electric flaps and electric trim. I'm only five 8 and I find myself pulling the seat all the way up the pain in the ass to see where the trim is on an Archer
Hi. Mean this plane costs two times less than diamond DA40 for instance. Choice is pretty obvious
Mojo.. the G5 is good for about 4 hrs. not 45 min why you keep saying this in your videos geez!
For that kind of money for an old design, fixed-gear fixed-prop plane, you'd think they could have added a left-side door &/or an A/C!
Adding a door would mean redoing the type certificate which would cost money, then they couldn't sell it for under 300k. Same with adding a/c.
It's a nice aeroplane but let's face it. It's just an upgraded Cherokee 140/150.
Pretty much.
Also the Piper Warrior II too..a great ...fast airplane!!!
@@larrysouthern5098 I always thought the Cherokee 235 was an incredible airplane. It was famous for being able to fly with a full payload for 1000 miles. They should bring back a modernized version of that airplane....this time with a pilots door.
I think THAT PLANE is a little more than a glorified 140 man...
If that! The rear seat is only one seat, because they know you can't get 4 people off the ground with this plane let alone get them to fit side-by-side in the back. Literally identical to the 1976 Warrior I've been training on. $300k for this is NUTS.
I don't like the G5 taking over gauges as a backup. 45 minutes may not be enough.
12 to 17 year olds ., in your experience? What would be your idea class size if you were the instructor.? The Piper Pilot 100i OR Cessna Skyhawk . .. ..
I never understood the 1 door design. Yes less weight and easier build, but other than that it is just pain in the ass if you ask me. 2 door design should at least be optional or vice versa.
Can u convert to a 4 seater
My company flies these, 241 242 243JA. Nice little plane.
A single two bladed prop?
It’s a trainer with a fixed pitch prop.
No window vents to open while taxiing either
Dual Hour meters? How sneaky is that? Bill the customer for as long as the plane is electrically powered up. Keeping the time lower on the engine to save on maintenance since that hour meter is switched on by a pressure sensor in the oil pressure line.
OK Mike I’m sure you already know that that is not an arrow because it’s not retractable. And the Garman stuff the 375 is the same size as the 650 does not include a radio and includes a transponder. Come on Mike know your stuff.
Amazing thank you. Surprised this videos has only 3 likes...there is over 200k subscribers..surely this is incorrect. Anyways well worth a watch if interested in aviation. Perfect thank you once again.
☑️
Awesome trainer, but the decision to have only one seat in the back baffles me.
It’s a good decision. No seats prevents a back seat student; a common technique when in the advanced stages of pilot training, as the back seater will learn almost as much from exposure to a study buddy’s training as the front seat student. Typically, they’ll fly and back seat leg and leg about.
Two back seats, on the other hand, isn’t relevant in a school environment, as the PA28 range has always been capable of two adults plus two kids, or three adults. Also, whereas the one instructor/two students scenario is common, 1/3 is not.
@@catherineburton195 yeah, but flying schools (like mine) usually also rent their airplanes to private renters, and a 3-seater is less appealing for a lot of folks.
@@MarkThomas-yy4dk but at least it stops the renters trying to overload.
@@catherineburton195 most flight schools will make people perform weight and balance calculations before leaving anyway. 350 pound guy in the back could still be in the one seat, where we might have 2 kids in the back who weigh a combined 180 in 2 seats. It’s just one less seat, which sucks, because they could have easily fit 2.
I was going to comment it looks like an Arrow.
bro i am looking for a 4 seater plane under 150k which is the best crosscountry and family plane
I would say a C182, but would wait for the economy to change as all markets are currently "fictitiously" high in my opinion.
USED 180 CHEROKEE
Used Cherokee 6, give yourself a margin.
BD-4C if you are into kit planes.

Only half a back seat??
One student at the controls, one student observing.
In 2022 you would think we could get some door pockets on both sides and a cup holder….
what would happen if they put 2 doors on these planes lol
This should be a $150k plane. Like all certified GA, everything is about 1.5-2X the price of what it should be- A Bonanza or Cirrus is now $1mm. It needs to come down by a huge margin to make it work. A Bonanza in 1970 was, price-adjusted, $300k loaded... Now it's 3X that- sure, avionics are better, but $600K better, price-adjusted? Last I checked, we have a problem. Plane builders like Cirrus or Textron (Cessna/Beechcraft) are building entry-level planes to the very rich, getting them to move into their turboprops/jets in time- that's the business model. They don't care about GA- just eventually selling turbine-engine planes to the very wealthy.
In 15-20 years it'll be a $150k plane.
Well, it's an old design but 298 is pretty good for certified with half decent glass panels. It's uninspiring interior design but it's modern white, not soul robbing Ewing oil beige.
In the oceans of things that are horrendously wrong with GA, one is that the radio and autopilot aren't integrated in the main glass panel. Having separate units is unworthy of 2021. Profoundly so. And disgusting excuses to overcharge for the crude equipment. The main display should also be vastly bigger and closer to the pilot. The little backup G5 could also be better but it's not the worst. It serves its purpose. The obvious primary redundancy would be just two large identical panels. A prepared phone could be a 4th completely independent from the plane. The G5 role could also be a pop out unit. It really doesn't need dash space or being constantly on. Just two clean primaries.
So so much wrong with GA, it's terrible. How have they all been absent for 50 years. How
The bland interior is because it's intended for the training market, and they need interiors that hold up to students climbing in & out all day long. Everything else you mention comes from the 100i being cost-driven.
Archer! Archer! Archer! not Arrow!
arrows, archers there all the same eh moj. not. as the other guys say you mean archer. get a fact check. nearly $300K for this plane which appears to be base on previous (read old) construction/manufacturing technology and materials, nothing new re appearance, function and performance is way over the top. how many training schools could afford this? and it still only has one door and one glass panel.
"New"
A HUNDRED THOU. OVER PRICED
The price hasn't changed since the 1960s. The base Cessna and Piper were the price of a nice house in a good neighborhood in 1965, these are the same. Inflation, thank you Political Corruption Party. Geoff Who has been around awhile and gotten more cynical and pessimistic.
Dang, wish I could afford a $300K+ house. And I don’t live in a bad area or bad house compared to many.
@@TheReadBaron91 It helps to buy when the price is low. Now buyers are competing with foreign and massive richie business. I now live in an under 300K house but I bought in 2004 under 150K. Geoff Who notes inflation is a result of .gov squandering.
Back seat looks roomy. $298,000? You got to be jacking me.
Brand new Peterbuilt 389 $198,000.
See which of those two makes the most $

Strange choice of avionics. I would not buy this airplane
I don t like this plane
Expansive
The Piper 100i is a joke product. $300k for what amounts to a Light Sport aircraft.
