Hi Jacob! That's a really big bummer about your fuel pump issues. It's strange everything was working great after the Walbro retrofit and out of nowhere it started to fail. Your black nylon flex lines look seated good, not kinked and well clamped. I don't have experience with Racetronix pumps to know if they're typically loud whiners (it's okay me too lol) but at 19:06 the pump sounds strange. Definitely sounds like it's starving of fuel while the cars misfiring, shaking and likely sloshing fuel around. I wonder if the filter that goes on the end of the pump is sitting too high, too low, or even at an odd angle in the basket causing the filter to be pinched off? During my rebuild, the AEM pump I used was much smaller in diameter than the factory pump, so I added a large metal worm drive clamp around the pump to keep it from moving up and down. Another thought is definitely cavitation and sounds like what Maptun is leaning towards. At 17:16 there should be an o-ring on the end of that leftmost black piece of basket. That piece is a cover for an internal filter and the tip is where the o-ring should be. The o-ring might be in the basket at that frame of the video but I imagine if that isn't seated well it could cause cavitation issues. Keep up the good work my friend!
Thanks for the advice! I watched your video a few times while doing this job 👍🏼🤣 that o-ring you mentioned was in the backer during that shot, but I do wonder if maybe the pump is somehow moving up/down, or one of the black plastic lines is kinked 🤔

Try running some fuel cleaner through the system. That’s pretty bad mpg. Injectors RARELY fail on these cars, but perhaps that’s part of the issue. Make sure the plugs are gapped properly and also check for vacuum leaks
Don't care about the Audi, it may be a great car but it's not my thing. Miata may be fun to watch with such a project. But otherwise it is Saab that counts for me. Shame that two new fuel pumps give trouble after such a short time. I agree with Tony from Uncle Tony's Garage that aftermarket parts nowadays are quite often junk. Had to replace rear bushes on the 9-5 after only one season, on all four the flexible boots were torn and brittle. On the 9000 I had to shift the outer cv joint boot after only a year; happily enough the cv joint had survived. Looks as if aftermarket producers use cheaper, lower quality materials than OEM producers did, which is a shame as material cost isn't the big price changer.
As a fan of both Saab and Audi I wouldn’t mind seeing a comparison video between the modded 9-3 and the S3. A car I’d love to see you get would be a NG 9-5 Aero XWD or 9-5 Turbo4 Manual. It’s funny because I got my 08 9-3 Aero XWD just a year after you sold the turbo X so I’m always watching the older video hoping one day you’ll get another 2.8T car.
I feel your pain. I guess the AAA is the US equivalent of the UK AA or RAC? Luckily I did have cover when my first OG9-3 shredded its drive belt in a live lane of the M1. Just managed to limp into the services and the AA guy came to the rescue. Sarcastic so and so too. He just kept saying "Usable classics..." and chuckling to himself...😡
Btw if you keep having fuel pump issues the way I made it easier is take out the back seat cushion and cut a circle hole in the thin metal underneath. This lets you get access easily to the fuel pump from the top without removing the fuel tank, having to jack it up, or anything.
@AutoAutopsy they do for sure. And very reliable! I'm in AZ as well and have Sebastian swap my D088 radiator and intercooler kit tomorrow. Hopefully it helps the Saab
@@Chilloutdesertoh nice! He was sending us some videos of it. It looks pretty sweet. Make sure you join our Facebook group if you’re on there - Saab Club of Arizona 😀👍🏼
I literally had the same issue. Bought a cheap complete fuel pump from A1 auto and couldn’t figure out the odd noise. Tried a different pump and it did the same thing. Finally bought a complete Delphi pump and it has been fine since. Not sure what the issue is but I hope not to drop the tank for a long time…
So glad you got this sorted, Jacob. Your 9-3 ia looking good! I hope to drive down from Seattle for at least a day trip. Just took my '07 9-3 2.0t ragtop for a 10 day trip in BC. Gratefully, she ran like a top after the new ECU and throttle body. Hoping that continues. 🙏 Not much interest in the Audi content. The Miata holds somw interest for me, mostly because it is Gen 1. Thanks for all you do!
I must say that I don't regret I sold my 2004 9-3 last spring and got me a low milage 1998 9000t CSE in stead. Sure, it has some issues, too, but except for the immobiliser (which I am waiting for a guy to disable), it just runs. Okay, the ignition key is placed at the steering column, but the 9000 is still a Saab, and one of the best ones in my opinion, especially for long-distance trips. Good luck on finding the fault; it's always a frustration when a brand new spare part doesn't help.
@@AutoAutopsy Sounds great. However, my 9-3 had passed the 160,000 miles mark and started having larger issues, like a leaking aircon which would have cost $1.000,- to repair, one third of the sum I paid for the 9000 with a working a/c and 60,000 miles lesser on the clock. But even though the 5-door 9000 is a good-looking car, the design of the 9-3 sedan was bang-on. Even today it's a better-looking car than many contemporary ones, especially most EVs.
@@AutoAutopsy Yeah. The problem with the 9-3, however, is that you have to take the entire dashboard apart to get to the cooling unit which makes it expensive if you have to pay a pro mechanic to do it, like I'd have to. The cooling unit and the pump in the engine compartment aren't that expensive. But at $88,- an hour incl. VAT it wasn't worth it. And thanks. I already do. :O)
There are Bosch Fuel Pumps available. As for the O2 fault P0131. WIS states the following: Fault criteria: When voltage across oxygen sensor 1 is less than 100 mV while voltage across oxygen sensor 2 is more than 700 mV for more than 30 s. So Sensor 1 (Upstream) was saying you are running Lean, while Sensor 2 (downstream) recorded a Rich condition. So for the ECU the signal was implausible. Personal advice: Take those O2 Sensor/Wire faults serious, if they cause a too lean/rich condition it can grenade a engine. Also only Buy OEM, for Saab its Bosch who makes them. Also note, Life expactancy for the Bosch Sensor is ~170 000km.
Wystarczy dremel. Pozdrawiam serdecznie z Polski.
It sounds like its running dry. Maybe the mesh filter in the basket with aftermarket pump is somehow clogged? Or maybe those plastic hoses in the basket are cracked?
Always enjoy your Saab content… Also having AC electrical problems like another commenter on your channel on my 2010 209k miles 9-3. Would be nice to see some content on that sometime for the 9-3 as there doesn’t seem to be much on You Tube, or any suggestions would be much appreciated. Seems to be one of the most difficult diagnosis and trouble shoot, spent 0ver $700.00 to no avail at one of the few local Saab shops in my area throwing various parts at it some of which include the Climate control module, main radiator fan relay, and evac and recharge freon, tested compressor clutch and coil, etc, etc. one Tech 2 code PO691 Cooling fan control 1 and different vehicle Vins detected though I’ve owned this car since it was almost brand new. Of course this just happened as we’ve been having desert like temps up here in Norther Cali!!
I had a 03 93 for years. Gave it up around 350k. I was pretty hard on it. Neglected the shit out of it. Accidentally left it running all night one night. Came out to an empty coolant reservoir and no fire state. Couldn't get it going again. Sold it to another saab nerd for scrap value. He might of got it running for all i know
Jacob, Sorry to learn that you had such a bad day ! Like the viewer commented below : the gauge cluster could be part of your 03 Saab problem(s). Per my Saab Mechanic, never try to put newly design electronics into your Saab unless its within 1 or 2 years production of your Saab or there will be conflicts as newly designed electronics are not for older version. Just like you install a Window 11 to a computer originally designed for Window Vista, there are so many things NOT COMPATIBLE ! ! Like at the end of this video, you put the original fuel pump back on and she comes back to life ! Good Luck and love watching your videos !
Thanks for the support as always! The cluster does not have anything to do with the problems. It’s fully integrated into the OEM system via an adapter 👍🏼 the video I made on the install explains that in more detail if you’re interested! czcams.com/video/XssWi8oC6tE/video.htmlsi=sxduemcYr4FcxNZh
I think I had the same problem with my 2006 2.8L Saab silver convertible, 130k miles. Call European 101 in Del Mar, near San Diego. They fixed it after ~3$k of diagnosis. They'll remember my car😅. Enjoy your contents!
Nice! Glad to see the OEM pump back in and working! That seemed like an absolute bitch of a chore. On the bright side, at least this happened now vs on the way to SOC. AAA is awesome btw. Totally worth the money. You can do title transfers and other stuff at any of their local branches too.
Check you are getting 14v on the battery from the alternator. If not, you need a new voltage regulator - I used the VR-B196M and it works great. . Only 87/88 suffered from degrading wiring insulation so your wiring is likely fine - also do a parasitic drain test.
As a European, I am amazed that 91 octane fuel is considered premium in the US. In Europe we have nothing below 95, which is considered the cheap fuel and the 98 or 98+ is considered premium.
Was it the Fuel pump after all?, and didn't you just recently change it as well? I highly recommend buying AEM fuel pump 340lph which is good, if that was the issue my brother
I have an Opel with the same engine. However, I have a problem and maybe you can help me. With full throttle the engine gets too much fuel and runs too rich. what did I do ngk spark plugs map sensor clean it the first o2 sensor replaced and the engine still runs too rich engine and smoke black ad 5000 RPM also read I have no error codes. Do you have any idea. I love you content it's very educational
@@AutoAutopsy the Premium membership will get you a tow between 100 - 300 miles away IIRC. I think they’ll let you use that like two or three times a year. Can’t really have project cars without having AAA lol
Wow, it's the fuel pump issue. One think I felt a little bit insecure is that the driver never really knows when the fuel pump is going to die. Especially that you can't change the feul pump of Saab 9-3 from the backseat side.
Hey, Jacob! Can you give a link to purchase your code reader? While my '99 9-3 5spd cv is (still) at the body shop, I'm driving an '08 9-5 wgn 5spd. Both were sitting a few years, the 9-3 long ago in CA, the 9-5 most recently in MA. So it's going through many of the same things as the 9-3 once did of getting back on the road, specifically to do w/the fuel system, and the 9-5 fuel pump gave out a few weeks ago on the highway near home. AAA brought it to my mechanic, but I've really got to get the premier level for longer tows. In June, I was carless for ten days. Anyway, my mechanic told me the same about the fuel pump, and now the 9-5 has a CEL P0442 needs new EVAP valve. All to be expected, or so I tell myself... It looks/sounds unbelievably hot there in AZ. Here in the East, it's not the heat but the oppressive humidity. Yes, I prefer Saab content, but it's all good.😎
Ugh. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I am sure you’ll get it sorted soon! Here’s the code reader I have. Definitely one of my older videos 😅🤣 czcams.com/video/OML3fpDz4Jg/video.htmlsi=xZON35kbHGJCEPG9
So how come an upgraded pump will make that noise? Wasn't supposed to be better than an used 170k fuel pump? I noticed you dropped the fuel tank, most ppl will just do a cutout underneth the back seat and take out thru the hole ... Why not doing it the same way?
It’s likely an issue with air in a line with the new basket, but I don’t have time to diagnose it at the moment. Hopefully I’ll have it fixed properly sometime in the near future when I am back from the owners convention. I really, really advise against cutting a hole in the body. It’s fairly easy to remove the entire tank and do it the right way (which is how most people do it)!
Hi, I have a strange problem with my car. When I park the car and try to start it the next day, it won't start from the ignition. To get it going, I have to connect a cable from the relay to the negative terminal while the car is in the start position, then the car starts. After I do this and drive the car for about an hour, it starts normally with the key without any issues. I've replaced the battery with a brand new one, but the problem persists. I noticed that if I disconnect the battery cables overnight and then reconnect them the next day, the car starts. I also tried using jumper cables from another car, but that didn't help. The car only starts by connecting from the relay. Could it be the engine control unit not sending a signal to the starter motor? I've also replaced the relay, but that didn't help either. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks!
It sounds like you might have a parasitic draw. If this is a NG 9-3, try unplugging the amp1 overnight and see if the car is still dead in the morning. That’s the most common cause on the NG’s
Prefer 9-3 content. Still like 900 content because they are cool. Not thrilled with Audi content. Very interested to find out why your 2 new fuel pumps did not work out. I have a 220,000 mile 9-3 linear that I am keeping on the road with your help. I am thinking the Miata engine swap and turbo would be interesting too…recommend you test the waters there.

Ah! That sucks. It might be similar? AAA basically offers roadside assistance and towing
Btw if you keep having fuel pump issues the way I made it easier is take out the back seat cushion and cut a circle hole in the thin metal underneath. This lets you get access easily to the fuel pump from the top without removing the fuel tank, having to jack it up, or anything.
I really advise against that personally!! 😬
@@AutoAutopsyHahaha are you saying there’s a danger using an angle grinder near a fuel tank? 🤣
As a Mazda 3, Mazda cx50, and 9-3 Aero Sportcombi, and soon to be ND Miata owner. I would love to see NA Miata content!
awesome, glad you think so! Mazda makes so many amazing cars. enjoy your journey with the ND!
@AutoAutopsy they do for sure. And very reliable! I'm in AZ as well and have Sebastian swap my D088 radiator and intercooler kit tomorrow. Hopefully it helps the Saab

I literally had the same issue. Bought a cheap complete fuel pump from A1 auto and couldn’t figure out the odd noise. Tried a different pump and it did the same thing. Finally bought a complete Delphi pump and it has been fine since. Not sure what the issue is but I hope not to drop the tank for a long time…
Glad you got it sorted 👍🏼
Good update, great video!
Thank you!
Not much interest in the Audi content. The Miata holds somw interest for me, mostly because it is Gen 1. Thanks for all you do!
Awesome! Thanks for the input. You definitely need to make the trip since it’s so close to you
Good jobs.
I own a 93Aero of 2003 in black. Enjoy your video very much and benefited from it.

All is sorted now, thanks! The NG 9-3’s are a great platform, though
@@sneakyfox4651all cars will experience wear and tear items (such as AC) with age! 😅👍🏼 enjoy your 9k!
WIS states the following:
Fault criteria:
When voltage across oxygen sensor 1 is less than 100 mV while voltage across oxygen sensor 2 is more than 700 mV for more than 30 s.
Thanks for the advice! The new Bosch O2 has fixed the cel thankfully
Why to persevere. Glad you got it sorted and we will see you in Portland Or.
Can’t wait! Looking forward to seeing your 900 once again
Actually, be bringing something a bit older and newer.
Wystarczy dremel. Pozdrawiam serdecznie z Polski.
thanks for the advice. when I get back from my trip, I am thinking I will get into investigating the cause of the failure and hopefully reinstall
It sounds like its running dry. Maybe the mesh filter in the basket with aftermarket pump is somehow clogged? Or maybe those plastic hoses in the basket are cracked?
That’s what I’m thinking…it’s gotta be the lines or perhaps the filter. But the filter looked fine 🤔 I’ll be investigating further after SOC!

Sounds like it lasted you a while! That’s a shame of an ending to it :(
Jacob, Sorry to learn that you had such a bad day !

Glad it seems to be working as it should!
fingers crossed! I am so excited for our road trip!
Do a fuel pressure test gauge on it after replacing the pump.
I was considering that but don’t have access to the tool! I’m sure I’ll probably pick one up once I look into what the cause was later down the road
Wow I was thinking about doing the walboro fuel pump for my 9-3 but now I guess not.
It seems as though there’s an issue with the basket/line instead of the pump. I’ll be able to diagnose more when I’m back from SOC!
Check you are getting 14v on the battery from the alternator. If not, you need a new voltage regulator - I used the VR-B196M and it works great. . Only 87/88 suffered from degrading wiring insulation so your wiring is likely fine - also do a parasitic drain test.
thanks for that! I will have to confirm
As a European, I am amazed that 91 octane fuel is considered premium in the US. In Europe we have nothing below 95, which is considered the cheap fuel and the 98 or 98+ is considered premium.
AKI and RON are not the same. North America uses AKI, Europe uses RON. 98 RON = 93 AKI, 95 RON = 91 AKI

Before I finished the video and knew the answer, I would guess guess the problem is probably the ignition coil and causing misfire of one cylinder.
Wow, it's the fuel pump issue. One think I felt a little bit insecure is that the driver never really knows when the fuel pump is going to die. Especially that you can't change the feul pump of Saab 9-3 from the backseat side.
100%...you NEVER know...it's definitely a little scary, lol
The gauge cluster where is it from? / Regards from Sweden 🤓

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my car.
