Note that this is Tim Burton's first time working with Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice) before he had him as Batman, and his first time working with Winona Ryder (Lydia) before she was in his Edward Scissorhands. And that "I myself am strange and unusual" needs to be one of those movie quotes that everyone says.
Now, since you're a confessed fan of Schitt's Creek, after October you need to check out "A Mighty Wind". It's part of a collection of movies made by Christopher Guest (also including "This is Spinal Tap", "Waiting for Guffman", and "Best in Show"), and besides the people Guest always puts in his films it has Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as a one-time folk-singing duo brought back together for a tribute concert. Levy's eyebrows have never been more insane.

Beetlejuice is one of those "you had to be there" movies. When it came out it had a unique energy and was like nothing else. It really made an impact on viewers. As it is now, with everything that has come since, it is fun nostalgia for those who saw it Oiginally but I can see how it fails to impress a modern viewer. The effects are dated, the best bits have been done a million times over and what remains unique to this movie is not enough to leave a big impression.
However, being of a generation that saw this in theaters and loved it, the recycled aspects are fondly remembered for starting here, the effects remind me of a simpler time and then there is the fact that Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) and Jump In The Line will forever bring back fond memories of this movie.
Thank you for sharing your review. I wish it could have had the same impact it had on a 12 year old seeing it for the first time in 1988, but it is perfectly understandable that it didn't, and realistically couldn't. Never worry that when your opinion differs from the requestors. After all, if everyone had the exact same opinion on a movie there would be no point in seeing what other people thought of the movie. It is your unique take that people are interested in, even if it might not match their expectations. Anyone who complains just doesn't get the point of this whole exercise. We are here for your opinion, not theirs.
    Keep up the good work.

Ashleigh: So they just realized they're dead and they haven't shed a tear.
You just made me realize something I really appreciate about a lot of Geena Davis' characters, is that she never takes a lot of time to have emotional breakdowns, she always seems to have more of any analytic mind about her and spends more time problem solving her situation, as opposed to being upset over things that are out of her control.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just really appreciate that about her characters.

Valium is an anxiety medicine that was also prescribed for insomnia and panic attacks. It's also known as Mother's Little Helper. In the late 60's- early 80's it was the most widely prescribed drug. Most commonly given to housewives to help take the edge off their day. Due to it's wide use the idiom, "sleeping with Prince Valium" came to mean someone popped (usually more than recommended dosage) valium and has basically passed out from it.
