Rick Moranis was one of the biggest names in the 80's and 90's but sadly his wife died. He stepped out of Hollywood, to be a dad. Go Rick!!!
He's baaaack....
Pure class.
Its rare I respect famous people but he is one of the few I respect.
@@retro8696 Steve Guttenberg, one of the biggest names in 80's Hollywood, gave up acting to work full time for a charity, helping vulnerable New York Kids! He's another one that went from huge fame to disappearing and that was the reason.
Hey.....this video was posted on October 21st, 2020. Larry King died on January 23, 2021. Yet she says here in this video: "didn'tLarry King die recently?" at around 10 minutes in.
"That CGI is a little rough."
That's not CGI. This film was made before that came along. That's stop-motion animation. :)
And compositing -- it's the mask that makes them look so out-of-place.
2nd rate stop motion animation. When you grew up on Ray Harryhausen.
And yet its still looks better than the CGI in the recent remake!
Ray Harryhausen spinning in his grave.lmfao
I wouldn't say it was **before** CGI, exactly, CGI existed it was just expensive and fairly limited. The Stained Glass Knight scene in Young Sherlock Holmes came out the following year, and the original 1977 Star Wars used CGI to produce the wireframe depiction of the attack of the Death Star during the x-wing pilot briefing scene. Stop-motion holds up much better than early CGI, though, I'm glad they used it.
The amount of rants I've ended with the phrase " ...Cats and dogs, living together, MASS HYSTERIA!"
Ha! Me too!
Same here.
This one, and âHallelujah, holy shit, whereâs the Tylenol?!â Are my go to endings.

Yes! This, and "Man, I've seen shit that'll turn you White!" I've used a lot...it fits đ€Ł
That's a big twinkie
"This movie is not dated."
I think the word you're looking for is "timeless." đ Because it totally is!
"A young Larry King? Didn't he die recently?"
A question people have been asking themselves for the last 125 years.
Just had to google Larry and sure enough he's still alive. Someone needs to create a "is Larry still alive?" web site like they did for Abe Vigoda.
He was in radio before Marconi.
@Gordon Morrice Yes, I knew that.
2 of his older kids died
When the Big Bang happened Larry said "WTF WAS THAT!?!?"
"She looks familiar, who is that?" That's Ellen Ripley, the xenomorphs' worst nightmare.
That's Sigourney Weaver, back when she was still a woman.
@@bwilliams463...... She still is.
@@bwilliams463 wat?

@TheVolourn would almost be bad to label it female lead instead of lead but that ending was so maternal it just works
11:05 That ain't bad CGI, that's really, really good stop-motion! In fact, there's no CGI in this movie at all, it's entirely electromechanical/optical in-camera stuff. Apparently it's pretty much the LAST big special-effects movie to all be done the old-fashioned way.
Thisđ
Entire movie was done practically and in camera. Lots of oldschool trick filmography was used
I thought there where Puppets. But yeah, there look very good.
@@Sunaki1000 For the "terror dogs in motion" scenes, it was stop motion, but for the stationary shots, it was puppetry. :)
This is so cool to know, thank you for sharing this!
@@brooksysdead The proton streams, Gozer's lightning, and the trap's entrapment beam were done in post production (along with the rotoscoping of the ghost costumes), along with compositing. The streams were hand drawn into the frames, shot by shot, using basically the same technique as cel animation. They'd project the shot onto a sheet of cellophane (rather than having it on a sheet behind it, as with traditional animation), and then would draw each stream while filming the cel. That film was then layered onto the original film, projected, and then shot again, to give the final look. Fun fact, some of the compositions got a bit messed up in the final film. They layered some of the shots of the guys capturing Slimer in the wrong order, putting Slimer's layer over the beams. Being transparent, they still appear to wrap around him, but because of the layering error, the beams that should be in front of him have his green glow overlayed over them. They fixed it for, I believe, the first BluRay release, but when they did another transfer for the 4K BluRay, it went back to the way it was in '84. Unfortunately, by the time we got to Ghostbusters 2 in 1989, they were already beginning to incorporate CGI, so the beams were now animated with computers, and it gives it a less organic look. Still looks decent, especially for the time in which it was done, but the overall effect is less timeless than the first film's effect.
Fun fact. John Belushi was originally supposed to be the 4th ghostbuster but he passed away. Slimer was actually added to the movie as a tribute in his honor and was modeled to resemble him.
Netflix has a show about how various movies were made. The episode on Ghostbusters talked about this. However, the guy who created the model for slimer said it was a last minute addition to make slimer look like Belushi and he didn't have the time to do that. So, he left it as is and told them that he looks just like Belushi and they bought it.
@@ymcpa73 wow, what an asshole...
And Slimer was originally called Onionhead until the cartoon series came out and they called him Slimer.
Also, Winston was originally going to be a more prominent character and was going to played by Eddie Murphy. While that would've been interesting, I'm fine with how it turned out because Ernie Hudson was awesome.
@@ymcpa73 I just started watching the netflix show and yeah, That is true. Man. Dick move, but Belushi probably would have laughed his ass off at that. Especially considering some of his roles. He probably would have caught the reference.

Kingpin, maybe not a big role, but entertaining nonetheless.
Man he was pissed when he didn't win the Oscar for Lost In Translation. He didn't even pretend to hide it
The green ghost was called "Slimer" he was one of most popular ghosts.
Also there was barely CGI and demon dogs were all practical effects and models.
He wasn't Slimer Until The Real Ghostbusters in 1986. Original name was Onion Head.
Yup. Dan Akroyd even joked that it was the ghost of John Belushi, after the scene in "Animal House"where Bluto pigs out on all the cafeteria food. Dan was friends with John in real life from their time together on SNL before Belushi OD'ed, and Akroyd had originally written the role of Venkman for him.
I was watching the netflix documentary about how various films were made. This movie had no CGI because the budget was very limited and CGI back then wasn't very good. They wanted slimer was supposed to look like John Belushi. The guy who designed the model didn't have enough time to do that, so he just kept it as is and told them see it looks just like him.
And Slimer was a painted peanut.
I always crack up when Slimer runs away and tries to take the room service cart with him.
In case no one has clued you in yet, the actress you didn't recognize playing the gatekeeper was in possibly 3 of the most famous sci-fi movies of all time. Speaking of course about alien, aliens, and avatar. Ms. Weaver was quite the actress.

The library ghost transformation is three different puppets on motion control motors, almost a precursor to Go-motion, which is the evolutionary âlinkâ between motion control and CGâs programmable movement. The dissolves between the three librarian puppets also foreshadowed the âTom Cruise shrivelingâ motion control rig for Interview With the Vampire. Ghostbusters is really good stuff.

according to the "Movies that Made Us" documentary, the film was incredibly rushed. They only had about 10 months to film and do all of the needed effects. So it's fairly impressive that any of the film looks as good as it does.
All the other special effects companies were booked too. So they literally created a brand new special effects company to make this movie.
I remember listening to the DVD commentary of them discussing the effects and how they refer to all the practical effect like puppets as "real". Apparently one of their children heard similar commentary previously about the terror dogs and responded "That's real?!!!"

Now watch Sigourney Weaver in Alien! It's a horror movie, not just a scifi.
It's a franchise series. We're trying to steer her away from those for the time being because of the time commitment and because of the canon listing we have to draw up for her.

Post-Hallowbeans, Groundhog Day is a must for Bill Murray-ing. His characters are basically always condescending jerks who think they're better than everyone around them, but like in a good way.
Yes, Bills characters, especially early in his career, all had that cocky sarcastic charm, but Groundhog Day was where Bill showed he could do more than that, and show a softer more likable side. And its one of the best movies ever made. They made a lot of rewrites on set, as they were filming it and really thinking about the premise and what it would do to a person's psyche, to really make it a more thoughtful and philosophical story.
Redeemable jerks. Corrupted by materialism, but "see the light"" and "change for the better" before the end.
Happy Hallo-Beans!
Groundhog Day for sure, scrooged for Christmas, and caddyshack for fun.

"She looks familiar. Who is that?" Please, for the love of God, watch "Alien!" She only plays one of the greatest protagonists in film history.
This was the period of elite stop motion animation. This was a period of master level practical effects. Watch the original series Star Trek films starting with The Motion Picture (very slow) and you'll see some of the best model work of the decade. ILM killing it.

What's bad are the blue (or green) screen composites. They're all done digitally, now, so you don't see the matte lines like you used to. The close-ups of the "dogs" were live-action puppets. The long shots were stop-motion puppets.

They wrote the part of Venckman EXPLICITLY with Bill Murray in mind, and many of Venckman's lines were not scripted. Indeed, most of Venckman's lines are written in the script as simply '(Venckman responds)' or '(Venckman reacts)' because they knew Bill well enough to know that anything Bill came up with on the spot would be funnier and more in character for Venckman than anything they would come up with ahead of time. She could do Alien and Paul. A spoopy one and a comedy, both with Sigourney Weaver, for Hallow-beans.
The "hearse with sirens" things confused me at first too, but I later learned it's a 1959 ambulance!
Yep, a 1959 Miller Meteor ambulance (co-made by Cadillac)
@@darthken815 You'll see them in many old movies of that era too!
Considering the paramedic can't even stand in the back of that thing, it is really the equivalent of a hearse with a siren.
As a born and raised new yorker who grew up with this movie as a kid.. this is a quintessential new york movie. The 80âs was a golden age and we were legit spoiled.
In typical NY fashion, union rules say that a ConEd worker has to be the one to throw the big switch that releases hundreds of angry spirits on the city.
Your commentary is SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE, FUNNY Laughter. It adds to the watch along. Watched so far 3 reviews and Ive subscribed,
Funny 'scary' movie with Rick Moranis as the lead: "Little Shop of Horrors'
Great Bill Murray movie (not at all scary): "Groundhog Day'
Both are absolute classics
also Bill Murray was in Little Shop of Horrors as well... briefly :)
For _Little Shop,_ can I recommend the original version instead?
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) Simply because 1: Excellent movie 2:Excellent special effects with only 1 or 2 optical shots, no cgi, everything being practical.
@@williamwhitecage7988 ...yes doctor :)
@@Smallpotato1965 No, dentist :}
Ashleigh: "This is a family movie!"
Literally everyone who has seen the movie: *smirks*
lol never had a Ghostjob before
@@Morrison64 Does that end in a phantasm?
@@benlee8436 yes with a excess in ectoplasm discharge
When I was a kid I thought the ghost was going to bite his weenus and he passed out because he was scared.
@@Morrison64 Should have used a containment unit!
I extremely LOVE your channel. Most of the movies you watch are some of my all time favorites, and seeing you watch them is almost like watching them for the first time. I would just like to give you a big thanks.
Your laugh is so infectious!!! Love these reviews.
