    The grand hall has to be my favorite. It's so elegant with all the gold details. The wall color just makes them pop. It's not too busy either.

    Hands-down one of the most beautiful private residences to survive into the modern day. One could easily be fooled into thinking that this home is on the shores of Lake Como; it has such a faithful representation, particularly in its interiors, to Italian ornament and design of the era, but with that unmistakably American amplitude and expansiveness.

    I’ve seen pictures of this house for years, it’s on of my favorites. It’s one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I love the detailed craftsmanship.

    Very reminiscent of the mansions in Newport RI. We toured The Elms, Marble House & The Breakers. They were all breathtaking. The Breakers at almost 25,000 sq feet was referred to as their summer cottage. Even if I had the money, I could not live like that. Just give me a wonderful old, Greene and Greene designed house.

    This is truly grand. It is a shame that an individual couldn’t have purchased it to make it again a home.

      That white elephant was never a home. It will be far better served as a boarding school or the headquarters of some vast internatational association. When touring some of these mind blowing gorgeous old hulks all I can think of is what happens if God forbid if I lost my glasses? Lol.

      I would also like to have a large home like this, fully furnished, but this amount of maintainable space is why most of Horace Trumbauers private residences no longer exist. He just designed the most elaborate, huge properties. I am sure most of this is from the clients ego. Notice that the big business clients usually die within ten years of completion. Then what?

  • @swilkobarfingtoniii1642
    @swilkobarfingtoniii1642 Před rokem +4

    A Trumbauer 'tour d'force' but on a far more livable scale than Linwood Hall. It's grand without being grandiose, (if that makes any sense?) and the rooms shown from the period seem to indicate it was furnished comfortably. The period photo of the dining room showed a more intimate arrangement than I would normally see in a gilded age palace.
    Thanks for this one, Ken. Very interesting and also very nice to see a house like this still generally intact!

    Trumbauer was the architect I would have hired to build my house. That being said, it's a shame that we really do not know how much is Trumbauer and how much was actually designed (other than much of the Duke campus) by Julian Abele with Trumbauer getting the credit as all the company's files were destroyed at Trumbauer's death. Excellent video of an amazing house.

    • @bscottb8
      @bscottb8 Před rokem +3

      Trumbauer's mansions are usually near copies of European originals, so full credit really belongs to others.
