Hey I’m in the video! I’ve come to the conclusion after playing the 4th game again and watching the movie at home that this movie is dogwater.
It's actually unbelievable this wasn't written during the 2009 writer's strike.
Oh i remember how Michael Bay used that excuse for Transformers 2 ... and then Transformers 3 came along and was nearly as bad 😆
@@lordmontymord8701 DotM was pretty good but that ending was absolute dogshit
Like wtf Optimus
@@PhantomPraetor Optimus did the right thing ngl. you saw what happened to Megatron. the mf died 5 times and miraculously comes back to life everytime and is somehow still a menace to society
@@zack8865 Fair point. However, according to the novelization, it’s made clear Megatrom realized he fucked up by letting Sentinel toy with him, and all he wants at that point is just to have Cybertron back. He’s fuckin _done_ with the fighting. If DotM had its original ending it would have been my favorite of the Bayverse quintology.
The initial idea for this movie actually began around 2010. I actually have a copy of the original script.
This movie was just way too safe to be an U N C H A R T E D movie. It’s literally called uncharted and most of it takes place in a fucking city?! one of the adaptations of all time truly
It’s not even that. It’s the fact that MOST of game takes place in an “uncharted” location. In the movie, 90% takes place in an Urban setting.
Actually no, even then, you could argue that other then the campsite and the monastery/shimbala, most of uncharted 2 takes place in an urban environment. So then what is the issue?
The issue is that it lacks that GRAND SPECTACLE! The amazing music! The tense atmosphere (check out “unwelcomed guests” and “the bunker” chapter from uncharted 1), and the love that come from the games.
Honestly if they just had Nathen Filion as Nate and just made it a show instead of a movie, it would have probably been better.
That’s literally what I expect from a Uncharted movie. It doesn’t matter if “the movie isn’t as bad if you think of it as its own” and shit. ITS AN UNCHARTED MOVIE. And not like Sonic Movie where Sonic is in a city because he was forced to be trapped there, not to mention it makes sense since Sonic X did a plot like that. Even in that movie it had the rings, the speed, the abilities and the robots. There’s some things for a adaption you just can’t remove, and removing the world travel of Uncharted in a fucking Uncharted movie is unforgivable
I honestly kinda hate it when people say, "When you look at it on its own it's not that bad," because 1: it's supposed to be an adaptation, and 2: it could still be terrible on its own.
Exactly!
It's a two way street. An adaptation has to succeed at two things: being a good adaptation and being good on its own. There are several examples of adaptations being good adaptations but not really being good on their own, for example, Aquaman I hear is a great adaptation of the comic (i could be 100% wrong, this is just what I heard) just as there's plenty of examples of the inverse, such as this movie.
I personally believe that a movie should always try to be a good movie first. If a movie can stand on it's own, then it can succeed at being a good movie. In Uncharted's case, I agree. As a movie on it's own, it is perfectly fine, and is, dare I say, a fun adventure movie.
As an Uncharted movie, it's terrible. But on it's own? It's fine. I'm not saying that's a good excuse to make, nor am I saying that it's wrong to point out it's a terrible adaptation. It's just in my humble opinion, I'd much rather watch an adaptation that's bad but a fun movie than an adaptation that's good but a bad movie, like Twilight. Those are as far as I know good adaptations of the books, but they're not good movies.
True. They could have made an original IP, but they used Uncharted to get at least the fans of the game in the cinema. If that's not an invitation to compare movie and games then i don't know. Of course you can simply use a story that was told before and make your own interpretation, but i think we all know Sony and the producers didn't put that much intellectual work into this.
And no. 2 is also right: If we forget the connection to the games the movie is still bad ...
@@varsityreviews707 But fine has a positive connotation. I would consider it mediocre.
literally the only reason most people went to watch the movie was because its connected to the games.
I've never played uncharted, and you did a better job of selling me the entire series than the whole movie.
Dumbsville is correct, Uncharted is way better than you would think with that concept. Many other game studios would have only cared for the action and not for characters and story, because this is just a treasure hunt where you kill tons of enemies and solve riddles ...
And now the movie is just that 😂 - kind of ironic ...
I’ve never played either but I’m suddenly a fan lol

I would also like to add that Mark Walhberg was supposed to be Drake originally. But production took so long he aged out of the role. I want to reiterate this: *production took so long Mark Wahlberg became too old to play Drake*
Like battlefield earth did with John Travolta and the lead role
They couldn’t just aged the character up or de-aged the actor?
@@dante_0962 No, because they clearly wanted this to be the start of a long running movie franchise (let's hope that doesn't happen, but i'm a realist, so there will be at least two more).
And good de-aging costs - and only makes sense when you want an actor to play a younger version of a character that is already established, like Michael Douglas as Hank Pym in Avengers: Endgame).
So it was destined to be crap from the very beginning.
dude already ruined Max Payne, at least that bullet was dodged with him ruining Nathan Drake too lol
Fun fact: Tom Holland apologized for being in this movie. Apparently he didn't think he was a good choice for Nathan Drake and thus didn't really give his all.
That was like a year before the movie came out, when the promotions were out I think
Didn’t hear about that
i find it ironic how the cgi people in the game look more real then the actual actors in the movie lmao
Not only the actors - the game had better physics than the action parts of the movie 😉
@@mrkaji8913 i-
its called a joke lol-
ikr Tommy Homellander is barely a real person, he's starting to be more like a cartoon character
Oh, and btw, the worst part of the movie for me was the fact that they barely use any guns at all. That is kinda important when adapting a THIRD PERSON *SHOOTER*
I don't think they want Nathan to be killing people that often, it's a Rated T film, I mean, PG13
@@Lucios1995 yea but he couldve killed *some* people or at least tried to shoot them, wouldve been better than shoddy melee fights tbh
@@Lucios1995literally not an excuse, iron-man literally gunned down a bunch of terrorists in the first iron man movie
The director forgot it was a third person game during the plane sequence, wouldn't be surprised if he forgot it was a shooter too.
Like adapting GTA V and having one protagonist who never interacts with a car
I never understood the casting of Tom Holland as Nathan Drake
Like Nathan Fillion was right there
Yeah...why can't they cast Nathan Fillion though? That fan-made film KILLED it
Because Tom is more popular among teens and this movie was basically cash grab for teens
They wanted him as the Nathan Darke in his early 20s and Tom Holland would've gotten the movie money because of who he is and he wouldn't mind as they're his favourite games
Because tom holland told us a sob story about how much he wanted to be in an uncharted movie
K, but Danny DeVito..
"the writers must have thought the joke was more funny than it is" summarizes this movie PERFECTLY
My favourite part is when Mark Whalberg's character committed a hate crime got away with it and then complained about people talking about it in a post credit scene. Bravo Vince
..hm?
Oh his real life crime?
He served his time and has reform since his youth. I'm not sure that's "getting away with it" even if other celebrities have had their careers destroyed for way less.
The chemistry with Nathan and Sully was so perfect in the games 😭 the reaction in my face when I saw them remaking the whole story and lore of uncharted and Nathan’s relationship with Sully was absolutely disappointing…
*Dysfunctional friendship*
With a blueprint like this you would think they couldn't screw up - but big Hollywood-writers always find a way ...
I just looked up the writers and one of them (of course there is more than one) has the first name Rafe. Sooo, revenge on the franchise because Uncharted 4's main villain had the same name or just incompetence? The Jury decides ...
The fact that Sully didn't care about Nate in the movie but just the treasure is just SAD!
Literally in Uncharted 3, When Sully helped him escaped Marlowe’s men, they soon become best buds but in the movie sully meets Nate and says to him “hey man Im gonna steal this treasure wanna help me?”
@@BadCity7 Yes, sullyvan is the biggest problem in this film, Tom Holland despite not physically looking like Nathan has his mannerisms and personality, I can visualize the essence of Nate in him, since the sully in the film has nothing to do with Sullyvan, is just another character entirely diferent, I hope they improve on that in the sequel.
Ross McIntyre summed it up perfectly when he said that this movie isn’t really an adaptation of Uncharted or about the story of Nathan Drake, but rather a vehicle for Tom Holland to prove that he can be more than just Spider-Man. Also, that Sony saw the formula of Tom Holland plus Sony IP equals financial success, so why not do it again.
@Caitlyn Carvalho That would be funny, but I don’t think so.
Then they shoulda made him Tintin
I remember seeing promo images from this movie and thinking that Tom Holland looked out of place as Nathan Drake, but by the time it actually came out I heard so little about it that I completely forgot it existed until this video got suggested to me. I’m sure that’s a great sign.
Literally the only reason I was invested in this movie was because I was watching this in class and our teacher had us take notes on the certain locations.
There's notes about the locations plastered on the picture itself
Hollywood when they realize ppl can still talk during action and not just throw one liners 😱
I think it's really funny that the Uncharted games have better writing even though a lot of games still use cutscenes just to show action they can't have ingame - or just to explain how and why the character gets to the next action setpiece.
But now a lot of Hollywood blockbusters operate like the action scenes are the only important thing and all this talking stuff is just filler. Maybe they should go back to the OG Doom games and just have a text explaining how we got from a to b, just to save time for the action ...

I don't understand how Tomb Raider has better movie adaptations than Uncharted, a series practically designed to be cinematic Tomb Raider that was so successful at it that even TR itself copied it. Also this marks the 2nd time Mark Whalberg was in a horrible movie adaptation of an amazing 3rd person shooter.

“It’s called UNCHARTED!!” Yes. I’m tired of people saying that adaptations shouldn’t be compared to it’s source. I agree that it should be able to stand on it’s own but don’t make it so that it can only stand on it’s own.
No one’s saying adaptations shouldn’t be compared to their source, it’s that they shouldn’t be judged ONLY on comparison to their source material. It can be a bad adaptation and a good movie, or vice versa, the best ones succeed at both obviously but it’s not wrong to acknowledge when something is still a good movie despite being a bad adaptation. Many people, like this CZcamsr here, seem to think they’re the same thing, or that it’s impossible to be a good movie without being a bad adaptation, seemingly because he’s blinded by his attachment to this particular series.
@@melancholyentertainment If it’s a good product that ignores the source material, don’t call it the same thing! If during production, you find the script veering far off from what you’re supposed to be adapting, don’t steal the fanbase’s affection to trick people to watching it. Have some balls and self respect to rename and rebrand and make it original cause otherwise you’ll just piss people off and show everyone you’re too lazy or cowardly or creatively bankrupt to make something new without leeching off the success of another IP. Geez, why do I have to explain this simple premise?
@@squirrelthegamer8483 Perhaps, but that’s an entirely different principle, a discussion to have with the studios. You don’t have to explain anything. I understand just fine. It doesn’t change a single thing I said, plain and simple.
@@melancholyentertainment I’m just saying you can’t have it both ways. You can’t have the same title and character and expect people not to compare it to the source. Like I said, you should make it good enough to stand on it’s own but don’t make it that it can only stand on it’s own cause otherwise, you’re slapping the fans you tricked into buying your product in the face.

One of the things I hate the most about this is that Tom Holland looks closer to young Nathan in the flashbacks. Also I'm worried about how they'll do a sequel without either ruining it for fans by dumbing it down or ruining it for the fans of the movie since certain parts of the games, especially the supernatural parts, can't be left out but are too different from the movie and would seem out of place for people who haven't played the games. I'm also worried about Eddie since, if I remember correctly, that's what the guy with the eye patch at the end was called, and he had a golden gun. THAT IS NOT EDDIE!
My favorite part was Mark Wahlberg looking directly into the camera, and confessed to his use of steroids and drinking baby blood to look like that at the age of 51. Such a movie moment in cinema history, surprised he didn't win a Oscar for that performance

i will never forget my first introduction to and impression of this series of games. my cousin, a couple years older than me, was the one who introduced it to me after he got it as a gift. i was 9/10 years old, and it was around the release of uncharted two. I remember watching my cousin start the game, the train crash cold open, how absolutely enthralled, captivated, and invested in the story I immediately was. I had never seen the series before this, I remember when I described it to my peers, I called a cinematic experience that you sometimes got to control, I explained my joy of watching over playing as being that watching the gameplay was not so different to watching a movie, even if i didn't choose the dialogue choices. it was maybe an hour or so of the game that i watched, maybe more, i cant quite remember, but it was so influential that in 2016 when uncharted 4 was released, i bought the uncharted 4 ps4 bundle, along with a 1-3 bundle just so I could play the games myself (i played the entire series during my wisdom teeth removal. pivotal core memory for sure).
Edit: I was also very excited for the release of this movie and interested in seeing it. I wasnt so sure about the casting choices but I wanted to remain optimistic/hopeful. In the end, I absolutely agree that at the core the writers/producers/whoever, didnt understand what made the narrative of the games so endearing and captivating and important to its audience. I think I enjoyed the film at an extremely surface level of omg game i love has been adapted to a film, but when it comes to comparing it to the narrative and world building of the games, it definitely feels like a slap in the face towards the sincerity and humanity of the well-written (though not without flaws) character driven universe of the uncharted game series.
I’m honestly still wondering how this movie made more money worldwide than Sonic 2.
When Nolan North showed up to scoff at the adventures these main characters had while on vacation, I felt some retribution, but not enough to save this movie.

Bonus: he's younger than everybody who played the game

Uncharted was PERFECT for a movie adaptation. They had a perfectly good foundation for a big blockbuster adaptation, and instead opted for an Indiana Jones/James Bond knock with Tom Holland. Uncharted is MADE to be a big cinematic blockbuster experience, and I have no idea how Sony managed to screw up something that was SO STRAIGHTFORWARD.
What really makes me mad at this movie is how wrong they adapted the characters.

now looking at hbo's adaptation of the last of us we can really see how amazing a naughty dog game, known for its story/characters/dialogue, could have been with uncharted. they nailed the essence of the video game while making it original enough it still feels new. image we got the same level of dedication in an uncharted adaptation!
What a great analysis of the flaws of the movie. Like I think this is one of your best works around. I love the passion that you show while blasting off the horrible parts of the “adaptation”.
For all that they left uncharted story-wise, it's too bad the filmmakers couldn't chart a good Uncharted movie. 🗺⚓
Find someone that loves you as much as Dumbville loves the metal pipe sound effect.
We should have a uncharted anime
My man somehow made a video essay with a well written script packed to the gills with tightly edited memes
The "screwed the pooch" part made break out in laughter. Was not expecting that 🤣
Bro uncharted movie is just play station cutscenes in 20k 💀
Who tf thought it was a good idea to cast Tom Holland as Nathan drake, I know Tom Holland to play young nerdy characters and Nathan Fucking Drake is a middle aged confidant and funny character
the opening of this video single handedly made me want to buy every uncharted game ever made
14 years in making the uncharted movie, guess Duke nukem forever isn't alone in this development hell competition at all.
The intro alone makes me want to replay the whole series, Uncharted is probably my favourite game series too
I don't get why they pretty much mixed 3 games into one film in such a horrible way, it's like they purposdely wanted the movie to fail so as to not become a series.
What's the remix/song for your intro
If Uwe boll made the Uncharted movie, it’d probably be better than this
exciting talking action!!!!
which edit of brakence - fuckboy is the intro?
When I went to see this film, there was a man a few rows in front of me who was snoring throughout several scenes.
I didn't even notice that it transitioned into the movie scenes at the intro until Mark Wahlberg showed up. No way that's how bad the CGI was in the movie, still looked like the game.
