  • We are in Long Island, New York and we head to the grass flats to go crabbing, catching blue crabs with Brian's sister Amy and our good friend Chris! Hunter the dog joins us for the adventure & we had a blast catching blue crabs! Crabbing with nets, only kept the big male blue crabs and releasing all females. We show you how to clean a blue crab and in the kitchen we made homemade blue claw crab cakes since we didn't keep that many crabs, best crab cake recipe ever!

That dog was just loving life. In the back of the truck it was like "you're not going nowhere without me!" Such a sweetie. Tell your sister she's very nice but was overshadowed by the pooch.

You can always pop them in the freezer for 30 minutes to put them to sleep before you boil them.

In the late 60's, my dad and I would go out on a small outboard boat crabbing. We used carb traps, had 4 doors that opened when they hit bottom. We tied on fish heads for bait. We would then tie bait to hand lines, and lower them over. Wait a bit, and you could feel the crabs pulling the bait. We pulled them up very slow, then netted them when we saw them before they saw the boat. The traps would have up to 6 or more carbs in them. Was nothing to go home with 80 to 100 Blue Crabs off the coast of New Jersey.

Reminder: the crabmeat is already cooked, because it was boiled before they harvested the meat from the crabs. You're just frying it to bring the "cakes" together, and bring some flavor. Great video! I'm in love with the puppy! :)

When the males and females are doubled up she is about to molt and shed her shell. If you never had a soft shell crab you don't know what you're missing. AWESOME VIDEO THANKS GUYS

Site fishing for crabs - a new one for me. I grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast, went crabbing often. For cleaning, we used a "wringer". Many years ago gas stations used them to wring out towels. It was two rollers turned by a hand crank. Remove the shell and claws and the innerds but leave the legs on. Break the grab in two. Feed the legs between the rollers and turn the crank and the meat gets squeezed out.

Blue Crabs are plentiful, but a lot of work. If you ever get to Louisiana down in Cajun Country around Lafayette, you will see Blue crabs bigger than anything I ever saw. The average from tip to tip on the shells is almost 7". Huge and so tasteful.

Crabs and labs! That's what is known as the "good life". Glad you enjoyed the very delicious Chesapeake Bay blue crab. They are actually the Atlantic blue crab, but are known regionally as the Chesapeake. They have been part of my diet for many years, and I prefer the hard ones like you had. Soft is good, but hard might be even better. Thousands of soft crabs get shipped to Japan every year, where they are considered a delicacy.

Are the females peeler crabs? They usually ride with the males prior to molting. Funny when you ask- Are they breeding? Response - I don’t know. If there was a shedding tank depending on how close they were to molting you could have soft crabs in a few days. Unless they have already molted and are getting hardened again after breeding. I shed soft crabs for years.

I bet there are Eels there as well where Darcie netted those Blue Claw Crabs.
How dare you Darcie, I call misandry. That is sexist of you for releasing all of the female crabs, lol!
Nice Crab Cakes, they look like an awesome feast!
I like to use long Korean spoons and Chop Sticks to extract the meat from Crabs, Lobster, Shrimp and Crayfish as well.
In 1976 as a boy, the 1st aqua life that I caught on my fishing rod in the ocean was a Blue Claw Crab at the Jones Beach Rock Jetty.
I always remember that wonderful experience. Blue Claw Crab do earn their nickname of the "Swimmer"
Years later a good friend intoducted me to; Cap Tree State Park and Robert Moses State Park and National Seashore. This is where I like to go for Crabs, Fishing Etc.
It is very worthwhile to catch Blue Claw and all species of edible Crab!
