  • Sorry I rushed the video a little at the end.
    First of all I’m no expert I’m just someone like you maybe who’s learning about roses. “I’m just a cook” ;)
    Clay soil does get a fair amount of stigma attached to it when we talk about gardening, but here we are talking about roses. And whilst we can accept clay soil is poor for drainage and roses do require good drainage, this helps magnify our dislike of clay. But if clay is so bad why is it an ingredient of a gardeners best friend John innes number 3? Clay I’m told is packed with nutrients especially if fed from above and the clay has an ability to hold onto the nutrients long term. I know the roots of roses will drill into clay if need be because i’ve seen it and it doesn’t take them to long to do so either.
    The issue of drainage remains of course which is why I dug the holes a little deeper and back filled with native top soil. Anyway like I’ve said in my videos before many times I’m no expert. But if you have a clay garden and your roses are struggling, other than the drainage I don’t think clay will be the issue. I’ve seen it said before on my channel by people more knowledgeable than I, that roses LOVE clay. A little of your own research on the internet may indicate the same. Either way I know the roses for me here in my mums garden, fed with a balanced diet from above have done very well in my humble. For a U.K. climate rose zone 8a I believe, they have done fantastic. If you wish to know more about no dig gardening I suggest you check out Charles Dowding, a very knowledgable man on the matter.
    Thanks

      Thanks Rakesh yes I did learn this the hard way. This is too dry, when I water I leave the hose nozzle inserted into the ground for a good 5 minutes a foot or so away from the rose so at least it gets a good drenching but I don’t get there often enough. In your heat it’s even more vital :) thanks mate

    The garden is fabulous! And, I just went out and bought a bunch of cow poop, lol. Curious how much rain your mum gets a week? I'm happy to see those roses thriving in clay soil, it gives me hope. Comparing her garden to mine, I think my lack of rain and organic matter has really taken a toll on my soil. There is also the zone difference - I think the UK is like a zone 8 (?) compared to my zone 6a so I think my roses have a bit of catching up to do. You know what the bad part about watching your videos? I see roses that I now want in my garden!!!!! Oh dear Lord......

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  Před rokem

      Hi Diane, rain wise we had a very wet April. Downpours every day if I recall. But I would guesstimate we’ve had zero rain now for over a month? Little rain in May. When I water her roses I do saturate them. I create a hole in the ground with a cane or something about a foot from the bud Union and stick the nozzle of the hose pipe in it. I then leave the hose for 5,10 minutes depending on what I’m doing so when I do water they get watered. Then I move to the next. But it has been baking hot here for what seems like an age. Almost drought like. Yes It’s rose zone 8 and I think a or b. Clay soil I’m told roses love. My mums happens to be thick clay and it’s clay’ee where I live. Drainage is of course the problem for clay but I don’t get to my mums as often as I’d like. If I were you I would try feeding from above without disturbing the soil with a balanced mulch with good nutrients. Well rotted horse manure I’m sure is fine gardners have been using it for centuries. That will work it’s way down over time and feed that soil and the clay will help lock those nutrients in as opposed to pass through faster like many composts. This is what I’m being told. Best of luck and let us know how you get on ;)

    Well I’m very pleased to see its coming on Beautifully, you have done an Amazing job and it has paid off. When you first started out all I kept thinking was, why did you not try it with one Rose first, just encase it does not work 🤔🤔🤔.
    You are right about no one else has done the No Dig on any big plants?
    I would love for you to do this again in your back garden, so we can see how some of your Roses that are in your pots, get put in the No Dig Method, or do you think you should not go that far and just use the smaller plants that are only young?
    I’m sorry to read that your mum has been poorly, I hope now she is back home and can enjoy the garden again, take care, thank you for sharing your flower 🌹 journey ups and downs 🙏

      Hi Mandy. A good point and ordinarily I would have tried one rose first. However I was trying to transform the garden ready for a funeral and only had realistically a matter of hours. I had done the research as much as I could have done prior so decided to just bite the bullet.
      You have no idea how much I’d love to attempt in my garden what I done here. But sadly my wife is not eager for me to transform the grass in our back garden as we have a dog. But personally I would love to. I’ve zero doubt it would work with my potted roses. :) thanks Mandy.
