Thank god! Bernard, if you are reading this, I am so sorry that you had to spend even 1 day for a plant. In the late 90’s, I did a LOt for legalization laws and was CONSTANTLY told by the Vietnam aged hippies that it would never happen, unfortunately I hear stories like yours that prove how much STILL needs done. Also, for the probation/parole violations that NOBODY is breaking a law but rather they are keeping them in the system. Soooo much justice reform. I hope from the bottom of my heart that you are enjoying your life on the outside.

Great news !!! Yeah, I realized this was from 2016, after I saw our idiot congressman, Clay Higgins, claiming to be an officer, he was fired soon after the filming of this, as he was from every post he’s ever had since he became a cop at 40 y/o.
He was a failed car salesman, alcoholic & in the midst of a midlife crisis after another wife left… so, he decided to become a cop (as one does). His 1st posting, he cuffed then proceeded to beat a black bystander that had nothing to do with the scene, for not letting him search his truck (which he did anyway). He repeatedly called him “boy”, as well.
Then he made his version of “crimestoppers” videos, which he was sued by victims & family members of his racist videos. Claiming young men w/ bench warrants for unpaid tickets & such were gang members & he said things like “you come to me boy, you raise your weapon ? I will return fire with superior fire” & “I’ll get you boy”, “I’ll show you no quarter”… now imagine foghorn leghorn saying all that, he was subdued in this interview, but he usually amps up his Cajun accent to a bizarre cartoonish quality.
Bobby Guidroz, (the guy who claimed he was the “Daddy” of the parish 🙄) actually reprimanded him multiple times for his tone & advertising himself as the “Cajun John Wayne” in uniform & doing paid gigs in uniform, and even selling shirts & coffee mugs w/ his badge visible in the ads . He brought the attention of the ACLU w/ his overt racism & was fired… but it was too late; he was already running for Congressman, as “Cajun John Wayne”, the yr Trump won, & a lot of conservatives went wild over his schtick !

Hearing the genuine opinions of the featured police officers is one of the most telling aspects of this documentary.
The one who was teaching him how to eat crawfish & he went w/ on a ride along, is our congressman, Clay Higgins. This guy lost jobs over his overt racism, the ACLU came after him & he beat a black bystander, while calling him “boy” repeatedly. He’s an embarrassment & so are the folks who fell for his “Cajun John Wayne” schtick (he literally calls himself that)

Obesity is basically an epidemic in Louisiana, but it is difficult to not get addicted to and overindulge in all the amazing foods/recipes Louisiana has to offer. Unfortunately there is even more alcohol addicts which adds greatly to the number of obese Louisianians.

I wonder what a war on obesity would look like though! I imagine them shutting down fast food places and more grocery stores. Sugar would have limits in their food and high fructose corn would be banned. Maybe incentives and more resources for weight loss!
However, knowing our government, it will be just like it was with the war on drugs, treating it like its a criminal issue and not a public health issue while the institutions that make it, never get held responsible.

This is in Louisiana...the South leads the country in obesity. Food is the answer to any and everything, whether good or bad and they can be at odds at another person and they are still going to offer them food.

What should change is that there should be mandatory academy training every so many years and just like they needed to be fit to even become an officer, they need to either maintain that or loose their job. My wife got into an accident due to a drunken driver, the cop on seen was well over 400lbs. He ended up dying before the case ever went to trial. These backwoods cops need to be investigated.

Here in Brazil a lot of this happens, although weed is not yet legal here, if a young black man is caught with 2 weed cigarettes he is arrested, while a white person from an upscale neighborhood receives at most a lecture from the police.

Marijuana prohibition was never about public safety. It's always been a way for conservatives to freeload off of taxpayers while victimizing them.
Cannabis prohibition originally was a way to lump hippies and people of color together, in order to get convictions and tax cuts/funding from those prisoners. The jazz clubs in north Harlem were seen having a lot of young white women go and have fun smoking that “devil’s lettuce”, and the older staunch racists didn’t like that too much at the time. However fast forward and it was truly a way to demonize subcultures. There’s an extremely good and older documentary called “The business behind getting high” I believe it was called and goes in depth into the history.

I used to be in the streets and my brother and I were tight with a couple attorneys throughout our lives. We were in our attorneys office one time just stopping by to say what's up and he put the D.A. on speakerphone so we could hear them talk about betting a real person's sentence during their weekly poker game. It was bananas to hear someone who didn't know they were being listen to speak so freely about playing games with people's lives that way, he was laughing in a very evil manner, definitely not a joking tone
I'm not surprised to hear this,when your decisions determine the lives of other people and you've done this for over a decade,you become jaded and immune to seeing actual people,it becomes a docket number and a game. Just my 2 cents.

Im 33 yrs old. From Wichita Ks. In 2013 i was stopped with a halfpound of marijuana and a lisc. firearm. No charges were filed untill 2015. It was misd for a firat ti e posc. 2 wks on probation i was pulled over with a gram of weed on my center console i had forgotten about. That was a new charge that went felony and was a special rule violation. The violation was catching a new case on a form of probation. I got handed 38 months in Kansas DOC persumtive probation. I took an 18 month drugcourt program. Bullshit
6.5 years for each joint that's bullshit I just got expelled for three gummies we seriously need to change cannabis laws and public feeling

Government has always treated things they can not tax as more severe than even murder. Now that they can tax it, they have to somehow answer for spending 100s of millions on the "war on drugs" propaganda while allowing alcohol and tobacco to be sold so freely taxed but knowing they are more dangerous than thc or even blow. This sounds pretty similar to my home state of Alabama with archaic cannabis laws. As of last year Alabama is trying to finalize medical marijuana but in true fashion it's being botched because of political reasons. They are only going to allow cannabis in tablet form so no smokable flower or anything like that and can't grow for yourself. Basically just a waste of time if you ask me

The Sherriff officer's response to the issue is indicative of the issue. As a society, we never discuss the catalyst for why people commit crimes. Also, we know that drug use like Bernards is consistent across races, but the way the laws are written, especially as it relates to getting bonded clearly stakes the deck against the poor and minorities. A great piece, thanks for sharing.

The vast majority of people in jail are men. Are police also sexist? Of course not, it's more nuanced than that. Police departments use statistics to address crime. Areas of high crime get the most enforcement. Those areas tend to be poor and black. So when police go into these areas and start doing proactive enforcement, it makes sense that mostly black people are being arrested. Do you expect them to go into rich neighborhoods with no violent crime and start arresting asian kids or something? Even if the police department was 100% black people, you would still see this disparity.
The real questions we have to address is why are black neighborhoods so poor, and why do black men commit a disproportionate amount of violent crime in this country? The answer is shitty hood culture, along with the break down of the nuclear family in the black community.

I’ve had multiple drug offenses in the State of Louisiana in the middle of my last charge they decided to drop a lot of minor offenses in the midst of that they found ways to not abide by this and tack additional offenses on for those trying to get their charges removed. It sucks because I’m college educated with a great mindset and get turned away from a lot of jobs I qualify for but at the end of the day I’m to blame and make the best out of it but I’m greatful outlets like Vice cover topics like these for CHANGE
Ps this becomes a lot of college students in Louisianas reality and they get stuck in the cycle praise to God I was able to relocate downside is I didn’t get to graduate out of fear of getting caught in this cycle

What really gets me is the tactics they used and probably still do. If one is caught with weed on hand and it wasn't while driving, why suspend one's ability to drive for 6 months or more. It's a way they keep people on the hook.

As a truck driver. And born and raised in the south. The place I call home away from home is the state of Louisiana. The people down there know how to love and talk differently. They for some reason make you feel at home when you’re hundreds of miles from home. I’ve had people tell me I could stay at their home. I’ve had people bring me home made food when I’m driving through Louisiana.

Legalizing doesn't serve its purpose when it primarily harms Latin American and Southeast Asian narcotics traffickers who resort to threats and extortion to cultivate and sell marijuana to the USA. There's a notable bias against Latinos among Americans.
Or disparity and how often that group commits this crime. Is there a bias against Black people for murder and white people for tax evasion? Certain groups commit certain crimes more. That’s not a biased. And some polling about how often groups commit a certain crime without an argument that they don’t do it disproportionately.
There is a notable air of ignorance in your statement. Legalizing removes the need of narco trafficking and puts the power into the hands of the population affected. Drugs flow north, weapons flow south. That's just how it goes. Doesn't matter to U.S. who brings it in.
Not all marijuana is sourced from illicit means, where do you think cancer patients get their prescription? The cartel? Clearly you don't understand that if it was decriminalized the underground market would collapse as legal competition would overwhelm the illicit operations as its just not worth the risk for the same profit. Let's be factual instead of your fiction. His skin color had absolutely ZERO to do with it. He had 8 previous convictions including 3 felonies and 2 cocaine convictions. He was NOT put in prison "just for 2 joints". He was charged as being a frequent offender because the 2 previous were felonies. Even though they have a 3 strike rule he was given multiple chances. There are literally hundreds of white people that got sentences +/- within 2 years of his sentence for committing less crime under their 3 strike law. White man Ron Heath got 10 years for 3 cocaine convictions with ZERO other convictions, NOT 9 like this guy.
All drugs should be legalised. Taxation, quality control and care provision for addicts just like alcohol. If you haven't come to this conclusion already, you haven't done enough research.

I’m an activist. This kid is doing all of this time for a few joints when the judges are letting child predators walk with a low bail or their families pay off the judges. This is unreal. He didn’t murder anyone, he didn’t hurt any children or animals. I don’t care about their 3 strike law. This is wrong.
If the allege defendant was involved in a criminal matter, there must be an accusing party of injury, of which the allege defendant would be obligated to make remedy to, of which, the corporate State of (what ever state) and its chapters, charters, sub-chapters, sub-charters, et al, i.e., Municipal Courts and their public servants, are not an injured parties in this matter.
Years of living a dangerous life and being on the wrong side of the law has taught me that a tough man knows when and how to get out of a situation, but a smart man never gets himself into one.

It’s crazy to think this even ever happened, I feel extremely for that guy, he was done dirty , they should be focusing on fentanyl or other hard drugs I hope he’s out and I hope he has found peace, he seems very family oriented and he was working as a truck driver and I find it cruel that he was handed this sentence
I knew a guy who served 8 yrs for 2 joints in 1958. He learned how to be a chemist in prison & became a prolific meth & hash oil dealer until he died of old age.

This is why people revolt and should revolt. This, in itself, is a crime against humanity. This is cruel and unusual. U would think we, as Americans, could have some kind of resource, some kind of recourse, that we can utilize for severe injustices such as this. Where's the common sense? We need a federal oversight committee than can accept cases, review them, and ultimately step in and outright overturn this type of ridiculousness when appropriate. People should be allowed to bear arms in situations like this. As a people, as citizens, we should have a voice when we are confronted with societal injustices such as are being committed against this man. Furthermore, the sheer amount of money that it costs to detain and house 1 person over 13 years is ridiculous. Especially when it is completely obvious, even stated, behind closed doors or otherwise, that his sentence has nothing to do with his crime and is strictly politically motivated. This is a travesty!
